EFMLS News -- December 2009 2 Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success!

Bristol Musings!by Loren Patterson, EFMLS President

If you didn’t get to Bristol, CT in October, you missed a great show and convention. Look-ing back at the Convention and show hosted by the Bristol Gem & Mineral Club in Bristol, CT, I can see that their members were dedicated in making the show really above average and a memorable occasion for all of us in the Eastern Federation. Special thanks to Dave Korzendor-fer and his many helpers, Dave seemed to be ev-erywhere at once attending to the many details. There were wonderful showcases displaying the many minerals found in Connecticut and New England. There was an interesting lecture on the his-tory of mining in Connecticut and dealers offering local minerals. This was a show not to be missed.

During the Cracker Barrel session there was a question about how does a club keep members and grow larger. This is a not uncommon problem for some EFMLS clubs and the best place to start finding an answer is by contacting your Regional Vice President. If your Regional VP has appointed an Area Representative for your club, this person is the link that you need to stay in touch with your Regions’ VP. The Regional VP can connect you with other clubs in your region as well as clubs in other regions. The point is that someone in the Federation will usually have an answer or solution to whatever question you may have. This kind of help can often spell success for a club having membership problems or other issues. The EFMLS is there if your club needs help. We are all in this together. A listing of all the Re-gional VP’s and Area Reps can be found in the 2009 EFMLS Directory (lime green cover) that was sent to your club president and editor last March.

Cathy and I stayed in New England a few extra days to do some garnet collecting, enjoy the autumn leaves, and visit some local attractions like Mys-tic Seaport, Groton, CT and Newport, RI. After returning home to Upstate NY, we only rested for about a week before heading out on yet another road trip; this time to Kalamazoo, MI to renew an old friendship and relax for awhile.

Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success! EFMLS News -- December 2009 3

Think about it. I’d guess that with just a little bit of effort you could come up with a club member who goes that extra mile to help the club…someone who is always there to help. Most every club has such folks among their membership.

If you club is fortunate to have a member who makes that extra effort, or volunteers to help without being asked, or otherwise supports your club, we would like to know about it with you submission of that person to honor them as AFMS Club Rockhound of the Year.

The folks who do so very much to help our clubs succeed deserve to be honored for their devotion. All you have to do is send the name of your submis-sion to me along with a brief write-up of their contributions to the hobby and I’ll be happy to get it into the EFMLS News and pass it on to the AFMS for inclusion in that newsletter as well. You can submit the name of an idividual or a husband/wife team AND the name of a junior each calendar year. With the clock ticking on 2009, it behooves you to send your information for 2009 to me asap. Any submissions received after December 31 will be counted as your 2010 honoree.

Please think about it…it’s the very least you can do for those folks who help make your club run smoothly.

AFMS Club Rockhound of the Year

by Ellery Borow, EFMLS Chair Hello! I am the new chair of the All American Club Committee and

I’m delight-ed to pro-mote this impor tant committee.

As an in-troduction; I am current EFMLS Sec-

retary, past president of the Gem & Mineral Society of Syracuse, former GMSS Secretary, former newslet-ter editor (and current contributor), and past Show Chairman. During the many years I’ve been active in my home club I have kept photos of our club’s doings to put into club photo albums. However, within the last few years I have been reading Pat Pitkin’s column in the EFMLS newsletter and have been energized, inspired, and motivated to do better for our club by creating a record of our club’s his-tory, activities, and involvement in our community, in addition to recording events in photographs, in the form of an All American Club Yearbook. I have learned from Pat that time is of the essence in starting and see-ing this club book to completion. Last year was a near miss for completing this important book for our club. I started too late! I realize now how important keeping track of my club’s history and activities all year long is and I will start today to assemble the required documents to complete our All American Club Yearbook. I wish that YOU TOO would give it a try. I realize it is very late in the year to begin such as time consum-ing task and the months that are left are filled with holiday get-togethers, vacations south, and other activi-

ties that draw you away from home and club. The 2010 EFMLS conven-tion is early – March 6-7, which re-quires us to immediately download the All American Club Award applica-tion and requirements from </www.amfed.org/AACA.htm> and click on “2008 Application”. Although these forms are from the competition last year, none of the rules/requirements have changed so please use the form and just change the date.

Doing so immediately will al-low you to assemble the necessary documents before the convention in March 2010. Submissions should be sent to me by February 10, 2010

Cathy Patterson7725 Van Buren Road

Baldwinsville, NY 13027-9779 I do hope many will give this a try. It is such a good tool to show others what you club is all about. Your scrap-book will be a treasured club archive. Just give it a try. I’m here to help. Send me your questions (see email above or USPS just above). In 2010 I’ll be en-couraging you more with step-by-step help each month to help you make your yearbook become a reality. I guarantee, you can do this! Yes, it will take time (allow yourselves sev-eral weeks) but if a couple go getters in your club meet just a few times be-tween now and February and make putting the book together a fun activ-ity the job will get done and will be fun to boot! Your club activities from 2009 will be your focus for this sub-mission . Deadline February 10. Let’s give it a go!

Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success!EFMLS News -- December 2009 4

Hi. This is my first column as your new Youth Activities Chair. I hope the information I give you is interesting and informative. One thing…..I would like your help. Give me your ideas – things your club has done for the kids, any great projects for them, whatever you would like to pass on to me. Although I have never for-mally headed our youth club, I’ve been the MMGS Education Chair for years. I go to schools, Scout troops, etc. and give a talk on min-erals and identifying them, as well as the related geology. Then, I take them to our club mine, which is just over the Maine border into New Hampshire. Yes, I know that the Maine club has a mine in New Hampshire! But – we also have another one in Oxford County, which is in the heart of the large min-eralized area of Maine. Another role in the club that I love doing is heading our mineral show’s Touch Table. You know how the min-eral dealers are always telling the kids “don’t touch”. We decided to do something about this 3 years ago, which became the Touch Ta-ble. We have mineral displays, and then encourage the kids to come and (of course) touch them and ask questions about them. The kids and parents love this. I also ID their “loot” that they get in the Kids’ Korner’s Mini-mine (a sand-box salted with tumbled stones and small mineral specimens). I adore talking to the kids. They’re wonderful – curious and

intelligent – and open right up when you talk to them. You have to remember NEVER to talk down to them. T h e y ’ r e small peo-ple and respond very well when you talk directly to them. They absorb in-formation like a sponge (pardon the cliché). Another great thing about the Touch Table is, since you’re talk-ing to families, is that it gets a LOT of people I’ve talked to to join the club. I always talk to the parents about MMGS’ kids’ ac-

tivities, which included the kids’ club and field trips including the kids. Again, please let me know of anything you’d like to pass on for the column. My phone number is 207-459-7986 and email is <[email protected]>.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Now that we have all “recov-ered” from our trips (some of them snowy) to the 2009 EFMLS convention in Connecticut it is time to start think-ing of the 2010 con-vention in Delaware. We have to think fast because the convention is the first (1st) weekend in March! I’m hoping that some (I’d like to say ‘many’ but I’m being realistic) of you have decided that you have some good enough stuff that you’d like to show to (share with) others. You don’t have to be an expert to com-pete,! Novices and Juniors can get a blue ribbon with 20 points less than a Master and those who enter as Ad-vanced get a 10 point leeway. I’ve seen Novices who got 90 points or more get the EFMLS trophy because it is the highest score over 90 in a trophy cat-egory which gets the trophy - not just a Master with over 90. If you need to review the rules (I’m hoping you have read the parts which refer to your interests before this) you can down-load the unofficial copy of rules from the AFMS website: <www.amfed.org/ rules/rules.htm>. The revised rules will be available after January 1 and include the new beading category. You can also purchase an official copy of the rules from our Supplies Chair, Suzy Millligan (see page 29). Start thinking now of what you might compete with and as soon as packets are available or you hear forms are on line get that competi-tion form in the mail!

Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success! EFMLS News -- December 2009 5

As we wrote in the November E F M L S N e w s , the dead-line for s u b m i t -ting your entries in the BEAC c o n t e s t is De-c e m b e r

1. This is because of the very early date of our next convention (Marc 6-7) and the need to give our judg-es enough time to carefully evalu-ate all the entries and for me to complete all the administrat ive work in time for the awards presenta t ions on March 6th during the con-vention.

Directions and forms for your entries, can be found on the EFMLS website at <www.amfed.org/efmls/beac.htm>. You can download them and print as many as you need. Also, to save you time, you can also use a label on each form to convey all the repeated information at the top of the forms (so you don’t have to write or type it numerous times) – newsletter, club, address, editor, e-mail. The forms are also included in this edition of the EFMLS News.

There is an urgent need of judges for the 2009 contest. If you, someone in your club, or know someone you think might be inter-ested in judging, please let me know as soon as possible. As I write this article, there are openings in all judging categories. You do not have to ask the person, I can do that. e-

This will be my last letter as Bul-letin Editors Advi-sory Chair for the Eastern Federation of Mineralogical Societies. I want to thank the Federa-tion as well as its current and past

officers for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your bulletin advisory chair for the past several years. It has been a very busy time, and I cherish the learn-ing experiences and friendships this po-sition has afforded me.

I will be leaving you in excellent hands, as my successor will be none other than Mary Bateman, who has extensive experience in the BEAC as well as many other offices of the fed-eration, most recently your Federation president.

By the time of this writing, all awards should have been received by submit-ting editors. If there are any questions or concerns, errors, or anything else pertaining to this years competition, please contact me (email preferred) and I will address the concern as best I can, and as quickly as possible. Please be kind in your words, and your patience is also appreciated, as I am often away on very short notice and may not be able to re-spond as quickly as you may desire.

One last word: for anyone read-ing who wonders about “behind the scenes” of the bulletin competition, or has ideas or thoughts of changes or im-provements for the future, I encourage you to step up and consider a term or two as BEAC. I am sure Mary will take you under her wing and guide you to a successful term as she did for me!

Thanks again for your continued support of the Eastern Federation and the BEAC.

Farewellfrom Natalie Darling

Editors Contest Entries due December 1, 2009!by Mary Bateman, BEAC Chair

Mail me with their name, telephone number and e-mail address so that I have contact information for them. My e-mail is <[email protected]>.

When Loren Patterson, President of EFMLS, called me back in late September to ask if I had any ad-ditional suggestions of people who could replace Natalie Darling, I was concerned that no one had agreed to serve as the BEAC Chair. When, just before the convention, we still had no BEAC Chair, it became clear to me that there weren’t that many of us that could step up to the plate

and take over in time to get the job done. I was chosen and agreed to do the BEAC Chair for the 2010 contest.

Unfortunately, we are still in need of a BEAC Chair for the 2011 contest (for 2010 bulletin entries). If you think you might be interest-ed in taking on this chairmanship, please let me or Loren Patterson know and we can talk about it.

As before, please do not hesi-tate to contact me should you have any questions or need information.

Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success!EFMLS News -- December 2009 6

For the fiscal year November 1, 2008 thru Oc-tober 31, 2009, EFMLS clubs and individuals gen-erously donat-ed $3886.47 to the AFMS Schol-arship Founda-

tion. Contributions were made up of memorial donations (19), valuable help donations (3), and regular dona-tions (7). Despite a gloomy economy, that represents a 10% increase in giv-ing over last year for which the AFMS Scholarship Foundation is indeed most grateful. Here are those donations re-ceived since the report appearing in the November newsletter:

Thanks to many of you for all you did to help out this important work

Well, the convention is over and I wanted to share with you the benefits

we (the Bristol Gem and Min-eral Club) got from hosting the conven-tion. Our goals in hosting the c o n v e n t i o n were to do something dif-

ferent to “excite” the club members, increase our volunteer base, and work more closely with the other clubs from the state. The outcome was an overwhelming success.

Although I don’t have an official comparison to previous years, we probably doubled the number of vol-unteers who helped us prepare for, and run the convention and show. I think part of the overwhelming re-sponse from the club members was due to rising club spirit that resulted from planning and preparing through-out the year. We also achieved greater cooperation with some of the other local clubs. A number of our exhibit cases and show volunteers were

Glad You Joined us for the Conventionby Dave Korzendorfer, Bristol Gem & Mineral Club President

from the Lapidary and Mineral Soci-ety of Central Connecticut, the Dan-bury Mineralogical Society, and the Worcester Mineral Club.. We hope to carry some of this cooperation among our clubs forward in other common events and activities. We had many more exhibits than in any past show. This forced us to have a different format and location for them, which worked out much better than any of us anticipated. In fact the larger exhibit area, and qual-ity of the exhibits raised the quality of our show and the perception of our club to the public who attended. This is born out by the fact that we had a record number of new memberships turned in during the show. Lastly, we now have a much bet-ter understanding of how the EFMLS works and some of the benefits of be-longing to the organization. We were able to exchange ideas with visiting delegates, and we made many new friends. Our club has definitely had a “boost in club spirit” from hosting the convention, and we all had a lot of fun.

this past year. We feel helping these needy students in the Earth Sciences field will be a tremendous help to our hobby down the road. When you are ready to make your tax-deductible donation, have the check made out to AFMS Scholarship Foundation and mail it to: Bob Livingston, Coordi-nator, 59 Ely Drive, Fayetteville, NY 13066-1001. Lastly, if you mark your check “Unrestricted” on the subject line, it doesn’t change anything for you, but we can use it toward the $$ challenge I wrote about in last month’s issue.

For Your Club’s Lapidary Shop: 1. Teach everyone how to cor-rectly and safely use the equipment. 2. Have a first aid kit in the shop. 3. Have a working fire extinguish-er in the shop. 4. Have safety glasses or goggles and use them. 5.Have dust masks available and use them. 6.Be safe.................Have fun!!

Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success! EFMLS News -- December 2009 7

December Greetings to all , Last month I announced that I

need to have your nomina-tions for the Each One Teach One Award --January 1, 2010, for those of you who did not

read the newsletter . Of course, we all know that this is a very short time to expect you to have observed your club members at their volunteer work. BUT, who has (without be-ing compensated financially) taught a new member how to use the lapidary equipment week after week until that student is ready to start teaching oth-ers. Who has worked with your youth group, teaching the mohs scale or identifying a fossil they found in the local creek bed. Your nominee may be affiliated with a museum , church or scout group, talking and demon-strating. All are doing their best to TEACH others about our hobby. So, to wrap it all up, I sincerely hope many of you out there have read my messages and will send your nominations to me . I really hope you do not think that I sound like a broken record. I struggle each month with this message !! Don’t let me down. I have had many of you tell me that you intended to send me a nomination, but you forgot about it. I have not forgotten about all of you !! I know that you can do it. If you have questions, please contact me. Thank you for reading this !! You can find the submission form on page 27 of this issue. It’s the same as last year.

My first order of business this month must be a belated but never-

theless heartfelt thank you to Joy Bourne and The Tuscarora Lapidary Society. Both included donations to the Eastern Founda-tion Fund along

with their contributions for the EFMLS Ways and Means drawing, and I only became aware of their generosity recently. My sincere apology to both Joy and the Tuscarora Club for the de-lay in acknowledging their support. Moving on to new business, many thanks to The Gem, Lapidary and Min-eral Society of Montgomery County, Maryland for their most recent very generous contribution to the EFF. And now a word from our sponsor! The Eastern Federation of Min-eralogical and Lapidary Societies provides a long list of benefits and services for our members. Without some help from the Eastern Founda-tion Fund some of these programs might have to be reduced or elimi-nated. However, I am confident that with your help that will never happen.

Each One Teach oneby Hazel Remaley, EOTO Chair

YOUR Eastern Foundation Fundby Fran Sick, EFF Chair

Several of our clubs are regular sup-porters of the EFF and many others send what they can on a slightly less regular basis. I hope to hear from many more very soon. And finally a word about dead-lines. Even though it has only been a few weeks since the 2009 EFMLS Con-vention, the 2010 Convention is only about three months away. So even though several clubs were recognized in October with the presentation of certificates for their support of the Eastern Foundation Fund, the cut-off date for donations to be included for recognition in 2010 will be January 31, 2010. Several clubs are very close to reaching a new 100% level of giving and just one more donation before January 31 will ensure that they are presented a certificate at the Dela-ware convention in March. Of course donations are welcome at any time, and all contributions received are added to the cumulative club totals. So if you cannot make a contribution by January 31 I will still be watching the mail for your donations. Please send all contributions to me at

President- Mary Bateman – Mary visited many clubs, shows, and special events in 2009. Loss of EFMLS insurance started her presidency then it was reinstated. The 2009 Scholarship honoree was Dr. Brown, head of the University of Maryland Geology Department. Mary attended both sessions of Wildacres as well as the Wildacres Workshop Committee in September 2009. Mary and First Vice President, Loren Patterson attended the AFMS convention in Billings, MT in August 2009. Mary also reported that Matt Charsky was chosen to be the next representative to the AFMS. b. First Vice President – Loren Patterson – Regional Vice Presidents in regions 1, 3, 5, 7 were elected this year. Only the name of one candidate – the incumbent - was received from each of the regions and each therefore elected. He participated in the Region 2 sponsored mine safety course in Allentown, PA as well as the AFMS/NFMS convention and show in Billings, MT in August. Loren presented a power point talk on the EFMLS for the Rochester, NY club, filled existing committee chair positions and completed the projected 2010 budget. c. Secretary – Cathy Patterson - Cathy was in touch with the Regional Vice Presidents, participated in the Region 2 sponsored mine safety training session in Allentown, PA, attended the AFMS convention and show in Billings, MT, and created an electronic version of the packet that was e-mailed to all registered delegates prior to the convention. d. Treasurer – Lou Budell presented a statement of receipts and disbursements from November 1, 2008 – July 31, 2009 f. Editor – Carolyn Weinberger reported that since the February 2008 annual meeting the newsletter was published 16 times. Each club receives 3 copies of the EFMLS Newsletter. Carolyn says she would like to see more newsletter information, especially about safety and Wildacres, shared in all the club bulletins. She heartily thanked the regular column contributors. g. Immediate Past President – Ellery Borow has assisted the current President, Mary Bateman, as well as many others offering answers to the many “How do I…” questions he has received. He served as Chairman of the Nominating Committee for the year. Ellery also served as chair of the EFMLS Ways and Means Committee. He continues to serve as EFMLS good will ambassador by visiting clubs and shows.12. Regional Vice Presidents’ Reports: a. Region 1- Kathleen Collins attended several club shows and other related events. She notes that some clubs in her region have had trouble with show facilities closing. Attendance at regional shows has not fallen off and sales are good. More clubs are offering special activities for kids at their shows. Some clubs are struggling with decreasing membership. She asked for suggestions to help with this problem from other regions and would like to share information she has about membership by contacting her at her email address. The annual Connecticut Tri-club summer picnic was a big success drawing 65-70 members from 4 clubs in her region. b. Region 2 – Michael Kessler attended about 14 meetings of various clubs and at least 4 shows. Approximately 58 club members participated in the Region 2 and 3, day long, Mine Safety Seminar held in Allentown, PA. Certification is good for 1 year and the course will be held again in 2010. Michael continues to conduct the rock specimen trading program. He has 22 states involved and two clubs in Canada. He says the program generates excitement at club meetings. c. Region 3 – Hazel Remaley has contacted her many clubs via phone and email. She observes that meeting attendance and good programs have been a problem for some clubs and has encouraged using the resources of the EFMLS for help. She promotes Wildacres and suggests clubs offer scholarships to attend then to give a talk at a club meeting about their experience.

d. Region 4 – Dee Tinsley reports her combined club regional picnic was a great success. She offered several suggestions for a successful regional picnic. She receives newsletters from her regional clubs and shares information among them. e. Region 7 – Barbara Ringhiser reported news summarized by her in her 6 regional, very active, and thriving clubs. Several of her clubs offer lapidary workshops, go on field trips, collaborate with local schools at major shows, and hold tail gates regularly. 13. Committee Reports:

a. AFMS Boundaries: Carl Miller reported no significant boundaries activity in 2009. b. Scholarship Foundation Coordinator: Bob Livingston reported despite the troubled economic year the total of donations collected was $2359. This was passed on to the AFMS Scholarship Treasurer. Certificates were prepared and presented on October 17, 2009 at the Awards Banquet. Eleven clubs have reached new % participation levels because of their donations, mostly those of individuals crediting them. c. AFMS Ways and Means: Ellery Borow reported no activity for the 2008 – 2009 period. d. Audit Committee: Don Pitkin reported that all transactions, bank statements, and checks balanced. Wildacres income and expenses were not included. All financial transactions appear to be accurate during the period between November 1, 2008 – July 31, 2009. e. Budget and Finance: Loren Patterson included the proposed budget for November 1, 2009 – October 31, 2010. f. Bulletin Editors’ Advisory: Natalie Darling reported that 98 entries were submitted to the 2009 Bulletin Editors Contest. Fifteen clubs participated in the Federation contest. Fourteen judges assisted in the process. g. Bylaws and Operating Procedures: Steve Weinberger reported that the Bylaws and Operating Procedures Committee recommended changing Article XIV. Dues and Fees. Section 2, Sentence 3 “If dues are not paid by April 1 March 1, the member society will forfeit its right to all services provided by the Federation to member societies.” Rationale: Up to date information about Federation clubs could go out via website and Directory earlier with this change in wording. h. Directory: Carolyn Weinberger reported that 2 issues of the EFMLS Directory were printed since the last repo0rt – 2008 and 2009. Each was mailed to the president and editor of each club. Complete information about committee chairs, regional information, various programs, the program library, and Wildacres are included. Alphabetical listing of all clubs in the Federation will be included in the 2010 Directory. Carolyn welcomes suggestions for improving the Directory. l. Each One Teach One: Hazel Remaley worked with 6 judges in 2009. She wrote articles in the monthly EFMLS Newsletter to promote the program. There were only 3 nominees. Hazel encourages all clubs to submit their nominees before the 2010 convention March 6-7, 2010. m. Eastern Foundation Fund: Fran Sick During the period between February 1 – August 31, 2009, 11 contributions from clubs were received. Six of these were memorial contributions. All were acknowledged with a letter of appreciation. In 2009 at the Awards Banquet certificates will be awarded for contributions. Fran wrote 9 news articles for the EFMLS Newsletter. The interest earned by the EFF funds projects not covered by the regular EFMLS budget. Fran urged all the EFMLS clubs to consider making a donation in 2010. n. Historian: Sue MacInnis has kept historical records up to date. Although the EFMLS is now using an electronic reporting system few requests for information are made. Perhaps it is time to re-evaluate these files. o. Insurance Coordinator: Carl Miller reported that during 2008 – 2009 much turmoil in the market place, insurers, and terms of the program was evident. Two significant changes were as follows: 1) the coverage has a $1000 deductible per claim which applies to paid claims for bodily injury, property damage, and personal and advertising injury, not medical payments, defense costs, and loss adjustment costs. 2) for additional “insured status” to be awarded to third party, a written contract must be executed. p. Convention Advisory: Matt Charsky reported that the 2010 EFMLS Convention and show will be sponsored by the Delaware Mineralogical Society March 6-7,2010 and the combined AFMS/EFMLS Convention and show will be sponsored by the Gem & Mineral Society of Syracuse, Inc. in New York July 9-10, 2009. q. Nominating Committee: Ellery Borow reported the 2010 slate of officers are as follows: President – Loren PattersonFirst Vice President – Betsy OberheimSecond Vice President – R. J. HarrisTreasurer – Lou BudellEditor Carolyn Weinberger. Carl Miller and Reivan Zeleznik are replacing K. C. Foster and Susanna MacInnis on the Nominating Committee. Also included on the committee are Esther Dunn, Barbara Fenstermacher, Bill Klose, and Maxine Nicholas. r. Slide and Video Program Librarian - Ken Tudor reported that 13 clubs have made use of the programs library as of October 2009 (half year statistics complete usage numbers probably double this). A massive undertaking of time with Dan Imel involved transferring the Rochester Symposium tapes to DVD totaling 58 DVDs. A total of 186 programs were exchanged.

s. Supplies: Merrill Dickinson included a report for the period 10/3/08 to 8/16/09. t. Wildacres Workshop Committee: Steve Weinberger’s report was from 2008 – 2009. Both April and September sessions were well attended with room for more. Steve suggests all EFMLS clubs promote Wildacres charms and educational opportunities. Four speakers provided talks on mineralogy, gemstones, rocks and minerals, and jewelry during the 4 sessions. Wayne Sukow handed the Director’s gavel to Fran Sick with Barbara Edge as Registrar. The committee is looking for ways to keep expenses down and maintain reimbursement for travel expenses. The new name for the committee is the Wildacres Workshop Committee which meets annually during the fall session to plan the budget, review the year, plan for the next year., suggest classes, advertising, speakers, and needs. Steve reminded all to be ambassadors of Wildacres. 14. Old Business a. Declining attendance at Wildacres - discussion about changing the dates available to the EFMLS was discussed. We are “locked” into the dates at this time because they are set by the Wildacres organization and not by EFMLS. b. Meeting Packet -Could meeting packet be emailed at least 10 days prior so that attendees can read it ahead of time? Cathy Patterson apologized for having slow computer problems that didn’t allow for early transmittal. Computer problem will be corrected so all attendees can view packet information early before the March 6-7, 2010 convention. 15. New Business a. Election of 2010 Officers – the slate of officers was read. A motion was made to approve the slate by Barbara Sky, seconded by K. C. Foster, and was carried by Secretary Cathy Patterson by unanimous vote. b. Bylaws Change recommendation – A motion by Katie Collins was made to approve the Bylaws change in wording, seconded by K. C. Collins, and was carried. A motion was made by Katie Collins to approve the change seconded by K.C. Foster, and carried. c. Approval of the 2009-2010 Budget – After considerable discussion about line items on EFF income (should appear as a separate item in budget), expense of webmaster competition trophy, mileage reimbursement, and hotel reimbursement the budget was approved. Motion made by Carolyn Weinberger and seconded by Fran Sick, motion carried. 16. Call for vote of thanks to host club - A motion was made and seconded thanking the host club Bristol Gem and Mineral Club for sponsoring the EFMLS convention. 17. Adjournment – A motion to adjourn was made by Merrill Dickinson, seconded by Barbara Sky, and was carried to adjourn.

Respectfully submitted,Cathy Patterson

2. BULLETIN CONTRIBUTIONS

CATEGORY OE: ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL/TECHNICAL ARTICLES – adult CATEGORY ON: ORIGINAL NON-TECHNICAL ARTICLES – adult (not judged by AFMS)

CATEGORY J: JUNIOR ARTICLES – Under 18 years of ageCATEGORY P: ORIGINAL POEMS – junior and adult CATEGORY FW: WRITTEN FEATURES – junior and adult (not judged by AFMS)CATEGORY FD: DRAWN FEATURES – junior and adult (not judged by AFMS)

CATEGORY OE: ORIGINAL EDUCATIONAL/TECHNICAL ARTICLES - Any original educational/technical article written by an adult member of an EFMLS affiliated club may be entered in this category. The article must have been published during the 2009 calendar year and written expressly for the EFMLS club bulletin from which it was entered. An article written for the federation newsletter is not eligible. The article must be at least a half-page in length.

Entries in this category should not be simply “reports.” A field trip report can qualify as an educational/technical article if it goes beyond reporting who went, who found what, and who got lost; i.e., a travelogue does not belong in this category. A report becomes an educational/technical article if it includes historical and/or geological information, gives complete (technical) descriptions of the material found, and/or uses research to support the educational value of the report. If research of any kind is done, a bibliography must be included. An article is also considered to be “educational” if it gives a “how-to” procedure for lapidary work, exhibiting, micromounting, etc.; if it provides a description of a particular mineral or fossil; or if it is a safety study on hazardous minerals, shop practices, or field work. If an educational/technical article has been previously published in a magazine or company publication; used as information for a display case, or handout at a show, class, seminar, convention/meeting; or previously published on the Internet, it CANNOT be considered an original article. When filling out the cover sheet for your article entries, pay special attention to the designation of “Advanced Author.” The “Advanced Author” is one whose earnings are primarily in the earth science field, or who has had writings/photos published in a commercial or professional context. If the author is an engineer, specify what kind. If he is a professional in earth sciences, state the area of expertise. In addition, a person 18 years of age or older who has ever won a first place trophy in Adult Articles in the AFMS competition is regarded as an “Advanced Author.” This information will help the BEAC Chairman to determine the proper category wherein the entry is classified for the AFMS competition.

CATEGORY ON: ORIGINAL NON-TECHNICAL ARTICLES - These original articles written by an adult club member are of an informational rather than technical nature. Entries in this category should not be simply “reports.” Entries must be at least a half-page in length and may include such things as show critiques; program reviews; book reviews; and editorials on matters pertinent to the hobby in general. A report of a field trip, club social event, rock swap, etc. that is mainly an accounting and could have been written by anyone who was present with little personal reflection, analysis, critique by the author is not a non-technical article. If an article has been previously published in a magazine or company publication or as other public information, previously published on the Internet, or the content is made up largely of quoted passages it CANNOT be considered an original article.

CATEGORY P: ORIGINAL POEMS - A poem written by a Junior or an Adult is entered in this category. In the case of Junior contributions, be sure to state the author’s age at the top of the score sheet. Poems must be related to the hobby. In addition, there is a designation for poetry content, serious or humorous. Please note this on the heading of the score sheet.

CATEGORY FW: WRITTEN FEATURES – Written Features are items (other than poems) in sentence form which add spice to a club bulletin, but do not necessarily follow the form of an article. They must be original, and there is no length limitation. A possible entry would include a humorous anecdote, presidents’ column, shop hints, play on mineral names, special club contest, or club history commentary (not just copied quotes from past newsletters, the author must introduce personal input/analysis).

Page 16: December, 2009 EFMLS NEEwwSS · 2009 – 2010 Loren Patterson PRESIDENT 7725 Van Buren Rd Baldwinsville, NY 13027-9779 315-638-8817 ... This is a not uncommon problem ... fun to boot!

Communication and Involvement Are the Keys to Our Success!EFMLS News -- December 2009 16

CATEGORY FD: DRAWN FEATURES – Drawn Features are original items that bring spice to a bulletin but do not follow a literary form. Included here are puzzles that are made up of a form or shape (not word puzzles), cartoons, crystal structures (drawn by author and incorporated in an original application). The drawn feature should have some accompanying description/heading to add to the originality but the drawing predominates.

CATEGORY J: JUNIOR ARTICLES - Any registered junior member of a club may be submitted for original articles in this category. There are two age categories, under age 12 and 12-17, that encompass a wide range of abilities. In selecting entries, look for quality that would be expected from an average youth of that age. For example, a seven-year-old (2nd grader) might be expected to write one paragraph or one-third of a page with no bibliography. The high school student should be able to research material and write an article one-half to one page or more in length with a bibliography. Minutes of a meeting/program or a report are not an original article and should not be entered in this category even if they are written by a junior member of your club.

SPECIAL PUBLICATIONS3.

If your club printed in 2009 a NEW, one-time only publication, such as a show program, a club information pamphlet, shop procedures, lapidary techniques and hints, anniversary issues, club history, field trip guides, etc., please send it in, clearly labeled as a SPECIAL PUBLICATION. The EFMLS does not judge such a publication in its contest. However, the top three, as evaluated by the BEAC chairman, will be sent on to the AFMS for their competition for Special Publications. The publication should be club and/or earth science related and the authors must be members of the club submitting the entry. Copyrighted publications that are evaluated in the top three will be submitted to AFMS as long as permission is granted to reproduce those publications.

4. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

1. The three highest-scoring entries in each category (with the exception of categories FW, FD and ON) will be forwarded to the AFMS for national competition. Three Special Publications will also be forwarded. Entries under the category OE will be subdivided into “Advanced” and “non-Advanced” articles and the three highest-scoring entries from each of these categories will be forwarded to the AFMS.

Editors or contributors who have earned a trophy in the EFMLS competition are not eligible to compete in that category 1. until two years have lapsed. Trophy winners, however, can compete in any other EFMLS category as long as they have not received a trophy in that category during the previous two years. If an EFMLS trophy winner is eligible for an AFMS first place trophy, entries can be submitted for those categories for judging, however, they will receive no EFMLS awards. If the EFMLS trophy winner scores in the top three AND is eligible to compete in the AFMS competition, those entries will be sent to the AFMS competition. The following are ineligible for EFMLS trophies (the date following their name is the date they received the trophy):

Mini Bulletins – (2009), (2008) Small Bulletins – Maxine Nicholas (2009), Joy Bourne (2008) Large Bulletins – (2009), Carolyn Weinberger (2008) New Editor – (2009), Alan McLeaf and Suzanne Hedderly (2008) Original Educational Articles –Bruce Hargreaves (2009), Jeff Carpenter (2008) Original Educational Articles-Advanced –Vivien Gornitz (2009), Kevin Dermody (2008) Original Non-Technical Articles –David Brand (2009), Heather Felsen (2008) Written Features -- Jane Owen (2009), R.J. One of the more frequently asked questions is “What’s this Liaison you ask for on the Club Information Form? The answer is quite simple.

Your club Liaison is the person who should be sharing Eastern Federation information with your club. He or she also might be the person you select to ask questions of our Federation officers when you club needs help or advice. In some Federations, the Liaison person is called the “Federation Director”.

Don’t panic! The Liaison person does not need to be an elected club officer so you won’t have to revise your Bylaws. In most clubs, the Liaison person is an appointed position - usually someone who is willing to give a short report to the club at each meeting, and help the editor select pertinent information from the newsletter to reprint for your members.

If you select a Liaison who is not one of the usual newsletter recipients (i.e. your President and Editor) we’ll also send your Liaison person a copy of the Newsletter each month and Directory when it’s issued.

We want to keep the lines of communication between your club and the Eastern Federation open. Please help us by selecting someone to fill this position in your club.
