FARC members at Frazier Peak, in Dave, W6TE’s red truck with 20 antennas and a simi-lar number of radios, of which at least half

were working by the time the contest started, due to a blown 100 amp fuse from the alter-

Why are the traditional amateur HF bands harmonically related?

K.B. Warner W1EH answers the question in

the December 1924 issue of QST. Page 17 explains, "The Washington Radio Conferences (of the early 1920s), encour-

aged by the interest of Herbert Hoover, grad-ually aligned the amateur frequencies to a

series of harmonically related bands, so that harmonic interference from the amateur ser-vice would fall on other members of the

same service ("each service should be charged with the duty of consuming its own

harmonic excrescences" Kennelley, pg. 18) or more colloquially "Everybody must eat his own mush."

THE DX CORNER By Charles McConnell W6DPD

October 2013

DX is the one you don’t have confirmed

Of the most recent DXpeditions, “If you worked it, it was the best DXpedition ever. If you missed it, it

was probably not so good.” “And so it goes.” Hugh Cassidy, WA6AUD

If you want help with DX, you can contact the local members of the Central California DX Club for some

assistance. Charles W6DPD 431-2038, Perry K6XJ 299-2802, or Jim WS6X 292-8353 can give you ad-

vice. The big thing about finding DX is to tune the bands. Check out the Central California DX Club Web

page at http://www.ccdxc.org for information and useful links.

The local DX’ers meet on the first Saturday of the month for breakfast at Carrow’s, 4280 N. Blackstone in

Fresno. The group gathers between 0700 and 0800. All are welcome.

Check out www.spaceweather.com and www.solarham.com for information on the solar cycle. The high-

er the solar flux and the lower the A and K Indices, the better the band conditions.

The address of the Sixth District QSL Bureau is P. O. Box 970, Fairfax CA 94978-0970. You can send up

to 10 address labels and $0.80 for each envelope to the address above. They will put 1 unit of First

Class postage on the envelope. If you work DX, you should have envelopes at the bureau so you can get

your cards. You may be able to check your status at the bureau at http://www.qslbureau.org/

The ARRL Outgoing QSL Service has raised the rates for sending ARRL members QSL cards to foreign

countries. The new rate is $2 for up to 10 cards in one envelope, $3 for 11 to 20 cards in one envelope

and 75 cents per ounce for more than 20 cards.

Postage rates around the world are constantly changing. To see current rates go to http://

www.qsl.net/w9ol/IRC_Chart.htm where you can find the current postal rates for most of the coun-

tries of the world. IRCs can no longer be ordered online from the US Post Office. To check on foreign postage, you can go to http://www.k4hb.com/postage.html. To learn about addressing envelopes to everywhere in

the world, go to http://www.columbia.edu/~fdc/postal/ for a discussion and examples. An International

Forever Stamp is now available for $1.10 at the U. S. Post Office.

If you don’t get a DX Bulletin and you belong to ARRL, you should register on the members only web

page and check the box for the ARRL DX Bulletin. This one is emailed each Thursday. Or you can go to

the ARRL web page in the News/ Bulletin section and view the bulletins there. You can also read the

OPDX Bulletin or the 425 DX Bulletin on the web. Search OP DX Bulletin or 425 DX Bulletin to get the

URL. You can subscribe to the Daily DX, Weekly DX or QRZ DX too. These bulletins will keep you in-

formed of DX operations and QSL information.

October 5th and 6th, 2013 – 47th running of the California QSO Party

Additional information can be found at http://www.cqp.org/Resources.html

2013 is the 47th running of the Cali-fornia QSO Party – "CQP" – perhaps the largest US State QSO Party! The objective of the CQP is to work as many stations in California as you can on both CW and Phone. Stations may be worked once per mode/band combination for points with California Counties (58 of them) as individual multipliers. California stations get credit for working stations inside and outside of the state with US States and Ca-nadian Provinces as their multipli-ers. The contest runs from 1600Z Octo-ber 5th, 2013 to 2200Z on October 6th, 2013.

The full rules for the CQP can be found at: http://www.cqp.org/Rules.html

An all-out effort is being made to beat the record by a wide margin in 2013 – there should be TONS of ac-tivity from California!

If you are in California and able to participate in CQP, please regis-ter your county by visiting http://

www.cqp.org/

The Northern California Contest Club sponsors CQP and offers a vari-ety of awards open to stations in-side and outside of California. The awards include plaques for the top operators in the Youth (under 18) and YL categories. A list of the awards is included in the rules. CQP is a lot of fun and we hope to see you on the air! 73 Chris N6WM – CQP Chair

I have put together my HyGain AV-620 6 thru 20 meter vertical finally. I have it 6 ft above ground in test mode. I may put it up where I have those 3 Ringos side by side giving me some height. It doesn't sway too much in the wind. Probably does better having rods for each band instead of traps that the wind would make a 23 foot vertical sway a lot more than this antenna. The adjustments I made per chart are right on the money. All bands are flat as per Bird wattmeter. My first contact was on 15M SSB with HA6NF in Hungary. My second contact was with KB0QC in Colorado on 20M PSK-31. So it is working well for me. Naturally it has noise, very low, at would be expected with a vertI-cal. But it is working.

Fresno ARES/RACES EC Report for September 2013

Hi All,

September brings school back into full swing as well as football season which takes center stage in

a lot of people’s lives. This month Ham Radio activities begin again after three months of vacation and

relaxing. The digital workshops will be continuing the after net practices using FM. We participated along-

side of the CARP Club with the Tour De Fresno Bike Ride, and hosted the EmComm Rally in the Valley on

the 28th of September. This was in conjunction with our regular Nets, EmComm Meeting, and EmComm

Coffee.

Flmsg Practice

Starting the 5th of August 2013, we began having Flmsg. practice after the nets on Monday nights.

Led by Richard (KE6SHL), several of our members met on 145.55 and practiced sending messages back

and forth using digital modes. Richard is directing us through the maze of many new digital modes most

of us have not tried. We have sent a picture or two with some limited success. If you have the capability,

consider joining in on the fun of this great learning experience. If you are interested in the digital modes

and would like to learn more about it, keep open the 8th of October. We will have a workshop at the Sal-

vation Army Citadel stating at 1830 hr. If you have the equipment or not, you are welcome. Richard or

one of the other operators will be available to answer questions.

Tour de Fresno Bike Race

The Tour de Fresno Bike Race was held the 14th of September 2013. It was a 100 mile ride. We

were asked to help the CARP Club with the event. People were needed at all of the rest stops as well as

other areas. Several of our members assisted. We used the CARP repeater system as well as the Bulldog

system. This made it easier to communicate from some of the more remote locations. Any event like this

one is a welcome training tool, giving us practice passing traffic under natural conditions. I would like to

commend Rob (AE6GE) and his crew for organizing and managing the event.

EmComm Rally in the Valley

The EmComm Rally in the Valley was held the 28th of September at the Citadel. Even with a small-

er turnout than anticipated, a small swap meet and Red Monkey Communications set up a table and sold

some Ham gear as part of the event. Ken (AE6LA) brought his motorhome which he has made into a Dig-

ital Communication message center on wheels, very impressive. Some of the other forums were as fol-

lows:

VHF and up Roving – (WA7WTF)

Winlink – (KF6IDK)

APRS – (WA6MSU)

Fldigi NBEMS – (KE7SHL)

Coast Guard Auxiliary Communications – N6JAI

We are looking forward to next year and making the next Rally even more successful.

Last but not least we would like to thank all that took part especially Red Monkey and M2 for their sup-

port. Without these two local vendors, the event wouldn’t have been as successful.

Net Control Staff Needed

We are looking for volunteers to take a turn as net control on Monday nights. This is not a difficult

task. We will provide the preamble and net roster. This is a great way to enhance your skills running a net

for emergency situations. If you are interested, please contact Gary (KI6OYW) at 559-269-1340 or email

[email protected]

Our Calendar

Don’t forget the Monday Night Emcomm Net at 1930 hr. on the 147.15 MHz Pl 141.3. We have

some good information and camaraderie. On the third Friday of the month there is an Emcomm Break-

fast at YFC on Cedar south of Ashlan in Granite Park at 0830hr. And last but not least the Emcomm

Meeting will be held on the fourth Thursday this month. The next meeting will be Thursday the 25th

of October, at 1900 hr. at the Salvation Army Citadel at 1854 Fulton St., Fresno.
