School Christmas Card You may have noticed the change of image on the Headline logo this week. The wonderful winter scene (without Santa in the sky) comes courtesy of our school Christmas card this year. The photo was taken by our Deputy Headteacher, Adam Daly and features the play courts last year and our students making the most of the snow.

Sharing Success Netball News Our U14C netballers were in action this week in the Netball Emerging League against Dixons Academy. It was a well fought match that ended in a flurry of goals – but not in our favour! The match ended Dixons Academy 8-4 IGS. Player of the match was awarded to Mackenzie Shearn-Miller (9JLF)

Rugby Update Well done to our Year 10 rugby team who were in action at the Ilkley Rugby Club against Ryedale School on Tuesday. It was a fantastic match and a resounding victory for IGS. The final score was IGS 29-17 Ryedale.

Christmas Parcel Delivery Well done to a group of Post 16 students who took part in the annual Christmas parcel delivery with Ilkley Good Neighbours. The parcels were delivered to the elderly and vulnerable in the local community. Thank you to Kathy Allen, Izzy Bragg, Katie Butterfield, Flora Jamieson, Callum Wood, Laura Copely, Josh Gill, Jenny Button, Sarah De Basio, Esther Abramson, Amelia Benito, Hannah Robinson and Jenny Postlethwaite.

Well done to Ben Watson (9BJS) and William Langan (9AHF) who are the first students

in Year 9 to achieve their Bronze Certificates. It’s great to see so many Year groups

achieving their bronze awards before the Christmas break – the race is now on for

silver!

Year 13 Presentation Evening We held our Year 13 Presentation Evening on Wednesday night at the King’s Hall in Ilkley. It was a wonderful night spent celebrating our leavers’ successes. It’s always interesting to see what they are all up to and which path they have chosen.

PTA Our next PTA meeting is in the New Year, Tuesday 21st January. Why not set a New Year’s resolution of ‘Join the PTA!’ We welcome all new members to our PTA – so join up and join in! The remainder of the meetings are due to be held on: Wednesday 12th March, Tuesday 29th April and Wednesday 11th June. Meetings start at 7pm and are held in the Lower Library in school. If you can’t make our meetings but would like to be included then email [email protected]. Watch out, too, for our 2014 Car Boot Sales: provisional dates are Sundays 6th April; 18th May; 22nd June and 20th July. The PTA also have their own Twitter feed now, follow them on @IGSPTA or like them on their Facebook page IlkleyGrammarSchoolPta.

GCSE Overview It is important for students, staff and parents to have the overview of what GCSE commitments Year 11 have over the next few weeks. We have provided them all with this information in the form of a bookmark for their planners. Please see the calendar below.

Drama Residential In order that students have the opportunity to prepare fully for the school production, we have again booked Ingleborough Hall Outdoor Education Centre. The drama residential will run from 12th to 15th February, leaving school at lunchtime on the 12th and returning during the school day on the 15th. Further details will be provided to students next half term. Letters home have been sent out to all students involved in the show. The cost per student for the 2014 residential is £110. This covers accommodation, rehearsal rooms and food. The school is covering transport costs.

Clothes Show Live Event 2013 In the fast paced fashion world, a young fashionista can be hard pressed to find the time, money or perfect outfit to go to any major fashion event. I mean, we might spend our evenings scrolling through the album of the shows/event/parties highlights Vogue uploaded but it’s never the same as actually being there...but I was able to attend a real one…a big one too: Clothes Show Live 2013.

I visited Birmingham NEC on Tuesday 10th December, the Clothes Show’s final day. All housed under one spectacular roof was an array of stalls and catwalks giving almost anybody a glimpse of true British fashion. The hustle and bustle of scurrying people, the vibrancy of loud music and the energetic environment was a crazy recipe for an intoxicating atmosphere. If you know your fashion history, you’ll know who Caryn Franklin is. As one of the main hosts and organisers for the

event since the 1980s, she proves to be as much of an exciting and sprightly character as her fantastic dress sense should suggest. If it’s the celebs you were after then the Clothes Show was the place to be. This year became host to the cast of Made in Chelsea; The Only Way is Essex and the X Factor. On a more fashion conscious note, the Clothes Show was visited by designers Henry Holland and Zandra Rhodes as presenters of seminars and sponsored shows.

Amidst all the shows advertising brands and stores’ latest collections, the central stage, sponsored by Diet Coke became a front for up and coming student exhibits. From Harrogate College to Birmingham Creative Arts University, the graduate fashion was modern, edgy and a bit avant garde. Taking inspiration from mid-century style, ethnic clothing and space age culture, each college, university and sixth form showed the very best creativity that young minds could imagine: it was a true specimen of modern, forward thinking fashion. As well as showcasing the latest young designers, the Diet Coke Catwalk was host to the Creative Awards 2013. Being Clothes Show’s 25th anniversary, there had been a wide variety of competitions opened up to teens with a vested interest in fashion design. The contest allowed individuals to create the perfect onesie, vintage handbag, indie inspired t-shirt and cocktail dress, all celebrating 25 years of the Clothes Show.

By opening up gateways for young talent and drawing in the style conscious from every corner of the United Kingdom, Clothes Show Live really does sum up modern British fashion. Whether it’s a vintage stall selling blazers by the dozen, Barry M giving away lip gloss by the kilo or a quirky student store just trying to get a foot in the door, it’s all fashion, very British and extremely stylish; that’s all that matters, isn’t it?

Adam Leach (10KPC)

Adam was a star himself: he was one of the finalists in the national Clothes Show Live competition for a vintage handbag.

Staff, students and other Creative Arts Evening visitors guest star in new Media videos Alongside the many excellent showcases of student talent at the recent Creative Arts Evening, A2 Media students were busy filming visitors lip-synching and dancing, producing some very entertaining results! Having managed to preview this material with a teaser video which concluded the Evening, after some fraught and frantic editing (well done Jake, Dec and Curtis!), we can now share with you three videos featuring a variety of familiar staff faces, students, parents and school governors.

Our various volunteer performers now feature in videos for Faithless (Insomnia), The Pussycat Dolls (When I Grow Up) and dance act Storm Queen (Look Right Through) – some chilling out on a comfy armchair, others busting moves choreographed by Poppy from the Dolls team, and then there’s the ‘grandad dancing’! All three videos contain brief previews of material that may be used in the final coursework videos alongside the Creative Arts Evening footage; if you check back through late December and January/February, rough cuts and eventually final cuts will begin to appear. Scan the QR code or use the link youtube.com/user/IGSMediaStudies to visit the Media channel (click in ‘Videos’ or look for the 2014 A2 playlist). Also in the 2014 A2 playlist you can find the One Direction video (and others) created by these same students as a combined practice exercise. All the videos from previous years have been added to a new playlist, ‘Music Video Final Cuts’, several of which are included in the feature length documentary DVD on the 2012 Media students. The new compilation of AS student film company idents is also well worth a look (just click into ‘Videos’). As critical analysis forms a vital part of the coursework, any constructive comments you may have on these, or later full rough/final cuts, would be very welcomed.

The aim of ‘The Hour of Code’ project was to get 10,000,000 young people to try Computer Science for one hour. So far 18,652,184 students have participated across the globe, 956 of those from Ilkley Grammar School.

Students have been using their iPads, desktops and paper

based exercises to learn computational concepts and to

think logically.

Projects have ranged from animated Christmas

cards coded in Javascript, platform games coded in

Gamemaker, Whack the Teacher coded in Scratch

and quizzes coded in Python.

Although Computer Science can be challenging, our students had lots

of fun completing the projects.
