Christmas and New Year Obligations The Diocese of Phoenix has informed us of the following:

Any Mass celebrated on December 23-24 concluded before 4:00 p.m.

on December 24 fulfills the obligation for the 4th Sunday of Advent.

Any Mass Celebrated on December 24 after 4:00 p.m must be a Christmas Mass and fulfills the obligation to attend Mass on Christmas.

This year, New Year’s Day (The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God) falls

on Monday. Though it remains a Holy Day, there is no obligation for the

faithful to attend Mass on that day. Mass for the Feast of the Holy Family, January 1st, 2018, will be at 8:30 a.m.

NEW LAW OFFERS TAX-FREE DONATIONS FROM YOUR IRA.

If you have an IRA the Government requires that the year following when you turn 70-1/2, you must take a calculated minimum portion of your IRA each year. This is known as the “Required Minimum Distribution” (RMD). This withdrawal will normally be treated as regular income.

Now as a permanent part of the PATH act you can make a charitable contribution directly from your IRA without any TAX.

Why can’t I just make a withdrawal and give it to a charity? You can, however, the withdrawal will first be treated as regular income and have an impact on your Adjusted Gross Income and on your Social Security Tax credit, BEFORE it is deducted as a charitable gift. Therefore it would be possible you would pay more taxes (check with your tax preparer to determine the impact). Under the new law if you make the distribution from your IRA directly to a charity it is not treated as income and does not appear on your taxes.

The requirements are: The donor must be at least 70-1/2 years of age at the time of the distribution. The distribution must be from a Roth or Traditional IRA.

The distribution must be made directly from your IRA account to a qualifying charity such as St. Bernard of Clairvaux.

Qualified Charitable Distribution are limited to $100,000.00 per individual per year (a spouse who qualifies may give a similar amount from his or her IRA.)

Each year, this season of Advent comes around. We bless another candle this third week in Advent. Let us ask God to bless our family on this Third Sunday in Advent:

God of rejoicing, this week we hear in our second reading that we are called to “rejoice always.” Help our family to be joyful in the midst of whatever happens this week. When we light the third candle on our wreath, let us bring your joy to our friends and neighbors this week.

We ask this through Christ, who is the ultimate joyful gift to the world. Amen Yours in Christ, Fr.

***Christmas Angel Tree Gift Drive***

The Christmas Angel Tree will be standing in the Main Entrance Hall of St. Bernard’s.

Sunday, December 17, 2017 We will collect the gifts at each Mass the weekend of December 16 and 17, 2017. Thank you on behalf of all the children you are helping during this season of sharing.

Each Christmas Angel bears the name, age, gender, and gift requests of an underprivileged child. This year the children are from our own Parish; the inner city Phoenix Parishes of St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Mark, and St. Martin de Porres; and Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Aguila, AZ.

Please take an Angel tag and try to match the description of the child and the gift(s) as best as you can. All gifts should be returned wrapped and with the Christmas Angel attached.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING Thank you to all who have updated their training!

All volunteers are required to take Safe Environment training every year

or every other year depending on the ministry you serve in. The year

runs from July 1st through June 30th. If you are a volunteer and have

not taken the Foundation Course, “Protecting God’s Children” you need

to go online to www.safeenvironmenttraining.org website and register for

a foundation class. If you have had the foundation course you may

update each year online or in person. Just go to the same website and

click on MY OBLIGATIONS and follow the directions. You will view a

short video; make sure you watch all the way through the credits, until it

tells you that you have completed the training. If you choose to take in

person, click on “register for classes” and find a parish giving the renew-

al video, “Keeping the Promise Alive 2017”. If you have any difficulties

please do not hesitate to call Kathie at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843

ex 309. We need to have compliance by the end of this year for 2017.

Thanks for helping us keep our Faith Environment a Safe Environment

for all and thank you for your continued service in the Church.

Our First Semester of Elementary Faith Formation classes have ended. Classes will resume the week of January 8th. All Catholic School chil-dren joining us for sacrament preparation, First Reconciliation and First Communion/Confirmation must be registered by January 8th. The fee is $35.00 per student and you may register in the Parish Office. The cate-chists and I wish all of our Faith Formation families a very safe and blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Sacrament classes (Second, Third and Heritage) are closed until next fall. All other grade level classes remain open all year. Easter is early this year, so it is very important that all children receiving sacraments are here every week as we have less class time to prepare for reception of First Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist. First Reconciliation for all second graders will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 @ 10:00am. Confirmation and First Communion will be celebrated at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 8, 2018. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Mid-dle or High School) or Adult Confirmation or you would like to be a cate-chist for Faith Formation, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309. God’s Blessings, Kathie

If you have ques-tions about your family’s status, please contact your pastor di-rectly. (Note: All Diocesan high school students receiving the reduced tuition rate for the coming year must have their status verified by their home pastor before they can be registered as a Catholic)
