From the desk of Fr. John: LESSON LEARNED!
Just in case that I thought that I could compete with the Seahawks I found out that I can’t! I just couldn’t draw the 12th Man away from the game last Monday evening for Reconcilia on, not even with the offer of a quicker than usual exit from the church while it was s ll half me in the game. I even had the addi onal incen ve of having Deacon Sam sta oned near the doors of the church to act as a lead blocker for anyone looking to get in and out of the church as quickly as possible. Some of you may have thought that the cartoon included here is really true and that I had already read all about your sins on Facebook and that you could stay home and have me mail out your forgiveness! It doesn’t work that way; the church doesn’t want forgiveness floa ng out there in cyberspace in case the wrong people might find it and grab it without ever expressing sorrow for any sins in life!
I am including next a photo of a card a friend sent me some me back both because I am a priest and a sports fan, espe- cially a Seahawks fan. I thought you might get a laugh from it as we come down the home stretch of games in high hopes of a playoff spot as well the home stretch for Christmas.
Gaudete Sunday. This is the name tradi onally given to this Third Sunday of Advent. It calls for Rose colored or Pink vestments and a similar color candle on the Advent wreath to reflect the tone of the season. The First Reading and the Responsorial Psalm are full of exhor- ta ons to rejoice, sing joyfully and to cry out with joy and gladness. The Second Reading picks up on these same sen ments saying “Rejoice in the Lord always” because “The Lord is near”. It adds; “Have no anxiety,” and ends with “Then the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus”.
There is also a line in the Mass shortly before Communion that es in; it says that we are “wai ng in joyful hope for the coming of Our Savior Jesus Christ”. Listen for it.
The ques on that all of these references asks of us is this: is the prepara on that we are doing for Christmas going to bring us to rejoice in joy, gladness and peace? Is the Chris an life of faith that I am living making me a glad and joyful and peaceful person who rejoices about life and who is not buried in anxiety? If not, what is missing, and what do I want to do about it? God is making every effort to make it so, if only we allow him by agreeing to life on his terms. Even though we all find ourselves paying much more than we thought we would for gi s, that we hope will make others happy we may not want to pay the price God asks for even greater happiness, which is called joy. Mathew Kelly wrote a book on this which he en tled RESISTING HAPPINESS. Learning to sur- render to God takes a life me of prayerful living.
Happy Sunday of joy, gladness and peace.
Fr. John.

BRING THE HOMEBOUND TO MASS
Catholic Community Services is starting a pro- gram to connect parishioners with fellow parish- ioners who are homebound and need a ride to Mass. They will hold an orientation session on Dec. 9th at 12:30 in the St. Martin room of the parish center at Holy Family Catholic Church in Kirkland. Any parishioner who is in need of a ride, will go through CCS and be vetted. Volun- teers will then be contacted to see if a match can be made. Which Masses and how often a volun- teer can offer a ride is entirely at the discretion of the volunteer. Mileage payment is also available through CCS.
Rachel’s Corner
Hope and Healing After Abortion “I said her name out loud for the very first time. I have not been to confession in 10 years and I thought I was fine. What a gift I have been given going to confession now. I am so happy now. I am at peace and more importantly, now I know my child is at peace. I am empty of all pain. Now I can begin to forgive myself.” - Testimonial from retreat Do you know what it would be like to feel peace again? If you have yet to return your pledge card, please do so by Sunday, December 30th. The start of 2019 will see our focus shift from fundraising to project implementation – and it can not be soon enough! Buckets are already in place around the church as the rainy season begins. Your gift will ensure that each of the four projects—new church nave roof, new nave ceiling, improved nave lighting, and bell tower re-cladding—is successfully completed!
Your personal gift will make a difference and is a very important contribution toward our minimum goal of $2.5 mil- lion. Pledge cards can be returned by mail to the parish office or in the offertory basket at Mass. Thank you for your prayers and support of Sacred Heart Parish!
YEAR-END GIVING TO SACRED HEART
All church contributions that you wish posted to your 2018 contribution ledger must be received at the parish office no later than Monday, Decem- ber 31. Likewise, contributions for 2019 must be received in January. If you are behind in your stewardship of treasure commitment for 2018, please make every effort to bring your giving up to date. The programs, services and outreach offered by our parish, as well as the maintenance and re- pair of our parish campus depends entirely upon your consistent contributions. Thank you for re- turning to the parish, the poor, and other charities a part of the many gifts God has bestowed on you. May God bless you in the new year.
