Faith Direct During Advent we prepare our minds and
hearts for the real meaning of Christmas, the birth of our
Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. As we reflect on the
upcoming Christmas season, it is likely that we will be busy
with parties and family gatherings. Perhaps even a trip out
of town to visit friends. With all of those joyous
celebrations, we might miss Mass. That’s where eGiving

“WinWin” with DSF
Our parish is proud to be an integral part of the
Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston. The many Pastoral
services and programs have blessed our Mary Queen
community in every aspect of Catholic faithlife. Become a
part of the great support we offer to our Archbishop,
Cardinal DiNardo, through the annual Diocesan Services
Fund (DSF). Our goal of $165,000 is reflective of our
stewardship and we have only 385 pledges from a parish
of over 2900 Catholic households. To pledge a
contribution is a “winwin” benefit, as Mary Queen will be
rewarded with a 50% rebate from any contributions over
and above our goal. DSF pledge cards and envelopes are
located near the Welcome Desk in the narthex of the
church. Let’s strive for 1000 households pledging $365.
That is only $1.00 per day for a multitude of blessings and
benefits to our local Church of GalvestonHouston.

La Salette Reflections
Fr. Rene Butler, M.S

What do you See?
(3
rd
Sunday of Advent: Isaiah 35:110; James 5:710;
Matthew 11:211)

The notion of sight dominates today’s Scriptures.
Isaiah: “Then will the eyes of the blind be opened;” the
Psalm: “The Lord gives sight to the blind;” James: “See
how the farmer waits...;” Matthew: “Go and tell John
what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight...,”
and: “What did you go out to the desert to see?”

The meaning of verb “to see” ranges from simple visual
perception, to attentive observation, to intellectual
understanding. That is how science works, isn’t it, as it
seeks to reveal the mysteries of the universe?

There are, however, mysteries that science cannot
reach. It is not equipped to explore the world of love,
faith, the meaning of life. Here we need a different kind
of revelation, the Word of God.

That is why we find so many quotations and
paraphrases of the Old Testament in the New
Testament. Jesus’ response to John’s disciples, for
example, evokes various texts from Isaiah. James
refers more broadly to the prophets. We are often
reminded that Jesus came not to abolish the Law or the
prophets, but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17).

There is also what is known as private revelation. The
apparition of Our Lady of La Salette, formally approved
in 1851 by the Bishop of Grenoble, falls into that
category. No one is obliged to believe in it; but for us
who do, it sheds light on our relationship with the Lord,
opens our hearts to contemplate his love, and helps us
understand both the meaning and the concrete
implications of the Christian life.

These weekly reflections might perhaps serve as an
example. Through them we approach the Sunday
readings from the perspective of the message and the
event and, above all, of Mary herself.

Any one of us can do this. First, place yourself in her
company, renewing your affection for her and
remembering her affection for you. Recall to mind those
elements of the apparition that have the most meaning
for you.

Then, look at the readings. Observe the resonance
between them and La Salette. Ultimately the question
is: when you look through the eyes of the Beautiful
Lady, what do you see?

Sacred Relics Of The Saints: Treasures of
the Church
Mary Queen Parish presents a teaching and exposition of
Sacred Relics on Sunday, December 15th at 2:00 PM in
La Salette Hall. Fr. Carlos Martins of the Companions of
the Cross will be here with a very special Vatican
collection of over 150 relics, some as old as 2000 years.
Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria Goretti, St.
Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower"), St. Francis of
Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas and
St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will also be
present a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as one of
the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the
world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and
venerate each relic. In the Church’s history many
miracles and healings have been worked in the presence
of relics, and many have been healed through this
ministry. Please do not miss this opportunity. You are
encouraged to bring your articles of devotion (such as
rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family
members which you will be able to touch to the
reliquaries as a means of intercession.

Parish Family Christmas Tree
The beautiful Christmas tree in the narthex of
the church is a fitting symbol of our holiday
season and an opportunity to share your gifts
as families in our parish community. Please
feel free to bring an ornament with your family
name on it, to decorate the tree, which is
designated as our "Parish Family Christmas
Tree". We invite all our parishioners and friends who have
not donated an ornament in the past, to donate one
ornament per family to our Christmas tree.
The Mary Queen Nursery will be closed
on Sunday, December 29th, to allow the
staff to enjoy the holidays with their
families.
Oplatki Christmas Tradition

The tradition of the Oplatki originated in Poland during
Early Christian times. This Christmas Custom began with a
simple white wafer, baked from flour and water. The
wafers are wonderfully designed to display Christmas
images, such as the Nativity. The Oplatkiare enjoyed by
families, typically right before the Christmas Eve meal. The
entire family will gather around the table with the
Oplatek. Generally the eldest member of the family will
begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and
passing it to another family member with a blessing. This
blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your
loved one in the upcoming year whether it be good
health, success, or happiness. The purpose of this act is
primarily to express ones unconditional love and
forgiveness for each member of his or her family.

The significance of the Oplatki Christmas wafer is in that it
shadows the Eucharistic meal that Catholics participate in
at each Mass.Just as we share in the Eucharist as one
family in Christ and receive Christ’s love through the
Eucharist, the Oplatki allows for one’s immediate family to
come together and share the love they have for one
another.

The Oplatki tradition is one that is easy and fun to
introduce to the family at Christmas time. All it requires is a
simple wafer paired with love and affection and the
willingness to share it.This is a heartwarming tradition that
will complete your family’s time together during the
Christmas season.

The Oplatki wafers are available at the Welcome Desk
in the Narthex of the Church and at the Reception
Desk in the Parish Center. The suggested donation is
$2.00 each.

Mary Queen Jubilee Fun Facts
December 15, 2019

Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration has been
a tradition at Mary Queen since 1979, when
four members of the Hispanic Ministry
helped to organize it. In those early years
following Mass, the Knights of Columbus
made a simple tamale breakfast and children
from dance studios in Santa Fe and Hitchcock came to
perform a Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. There were about
100 people who attended then, but over time, that
number has more than tripled! Now, the celebration
includes Matachines from St. Charles Borromeo, who
participate in Mass and then perform outside of Mass.
There are mariachis who perform during the meal, which
is now provided by the Hispanic Ministry and consists of
tamales, tacos and Mexican Sweet breads.
The Mary Queen Woodworkers have been busy
with many projects. The most
exciting one is our newly completed
workshop located in the garage at
Mary’s House at the back of the
property.Anyone interested in wood
working is invited to join this unique
and meaningful new ministry. All
skill levels are welcome! The group meets each month at
the workshop on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 7:00
PM and the 1st and 3rd Saturdays at 9:00 AM.

For more information please contact Chris Austgen at
La Salette Christmas Cards
are available for $3.00 each at the
Reception Desk in the Parish Center,
the Welcome Desk in the Church
Narthex and the foyer of St. Joseph’s
Chapel. By sending these Christmas
cards to family or friends, they will be remembered in the
Christmas prayers and Masses of the Missionaries of La
Salette. These intentions will be placed on the altar
during the Christmas Masses. Offerings for each card
may be made in the envelope provided.
Thanksgiving Blessing 2019 was truly a huge
blessing for everyone involved. Thanks to the generosity
of so many parishioners we were able to give away 194
bags of Thanksgiving Blessings. These bags had all of the
groceries needed for a Thanksgiving dinner and fresh
produce, apple or pumpkin pie and a $15 Kroger gift card
for a turkey/ham. In honor of our 50th Jubilee, we added
several new things this year. In addition to the groceries
we had 5 other stations for our clients to go through:

1) Friendswood Public Library did crafts and gave
away children’s books.

2) Our Mary Queen Prayer Team prayed with our
clients and gave them a cross.

3) We had enough crocheted hats to give three per
family.

4) Our “extra” station had Pepperidge Farm bread and
produce.

5) Fourtyeight raffle baskets (cleaning supplies,
hygiene items, snacks, crafts and gift cards).

Thank you so much for your donations Elementary Faith
Formation Classes, Mary’s Chain of Love, Queen’s Bee
Quilters, Mary Queen Wood Workers and to everyone
who donated money, gift cards, crosses and hats. Thank
you to all of the wonderful volunteers the so very
dedicated Food Pantry volunteers, several parishioners,
and the management and staff at Kroger on FM 528 for
their patience and cooperation. Mary Queen has once
again heard the call to love our neighbor.
