The Bach Festival, now in its 76th year, bringsdozens of world-class musicians to townthe third and fourth weeks of July andoffers the finest works by JohannSebastian Bach, Johann Christian Bach(the master’s youngest son) and a host ofother classical composers. Concerts takeplace at Sunset Center, the CarmelMission, All Saints’ Church, the Churchin the Forest and San Carlos Cathedral.

“Whereas last summer’s festival themewas France,” says Nicola Reilly, directorof development and marketing, “nextyear’s theme is Italy. Just a few blocks from Sunset Center, Carmel’s sto-ried outdoor Forest Theater dates back to 1908, whenpoet-dramatist Herbert Heron and several of hisbohemian cohorts, namely authors Mary Austin andMichael Williams, came up with the idea for a theaterin the wild.

In the early days, the town had only a few hundredresidents, the streets weren’t paved, and electricityhadn’t yet come over the hill from Monterey. The out-

While the theater has been expandedand updated since the early days, perfor-mances there are still a unique experi-ence, with stars twinkling through thecanopy of redwoods and bonfires light-ing the stage and warming the audience.

Two longstanding groups, PacificRepertory Theatre and the ForestTheater Guild offer regular perfor-

Another early establishment in townis the Carmel Art Association, an artist-owned-and-operated gallery. Founded in1927, the Carmel Art Association fea-tures the works of more than 100 pro-fessional local artists and displays adiversity of styles and art mediumsthrough monthly and ongoing exhibi-tions, which are free and open to thepublic.

6 GG Gift Guide — The Carmel Pine Cone December 13, 2013

G I F T G U I D E

By ELAINE HESSER

OK, I read Lisa Crawford Watson’s guide toholiday shopping in the Nov. 29 Pine Cone. She nailed some artisanal and local gift

ideas with spot-on descriptions, and I was impressed— but I was also challenged. So I decided to seek outsome gifts with a bit of whimsy. You know, things thatare nice, but also make the recipients want to giggle alittle, or say, “Awwww, that’s so cute!”

It turned out there are plenty of fascinating optionsfor unusual gifts around here.

The hand-crafted one-of-a-kind birdhouses atVictorian Bird Homes and Patio Arts in CarmelValley, for example, caught my eye. These charmingVictorian replicas, sold by Bruce and Angie Looram,

bags are handwoven from straw and open in the, um,rear. They come in bright colors and are just roundand cute as can be. Nearby is a clutch purse wovenfrom candy wrappers in Allende, Mexico. Kolischwants folks to know she adheres to Fair Trade practiceswith the workers in Nepal and around the world, ensuring a living wage, respecting the environmentand other cultures, and more.

Pig-shaped purses are hard to follow, but I was on amission. Heading into downtown Carmel, I was luredinto Meredith Crowell’s Linens & Such (San Carlosand Eighth) by some colorful dishtowels and socks inthe doorway. The tiny storefront (it’s just 250 squarefeet) with a rustic brick floor is packed with colorful

Local stores offer the best gifts — especially whimsical oneshad me briefly considering erecting a mini-PacificGrove on the deck of my condo, but then I remem-bered that my cat is a mighty huntress. That would beone dangerous neighborhood for the finches! Onward....

In the Carmel Valley Village Center in the Valley, Ifound Cheppu from Himalaya and its charmingowner, Christine Kolisch. Kolisch, a self-described“trekker,” made her home in Nepal for 13 years. Shegot into clothing design partly out of necessity — shewas so much taller than the Nepalese people that shehad to design her own clothes and have them made. Her store is full of clothing and accessories withintriguing textures and eye-popping colors made to herspecifications in Nepal and a few other places. It alsohas one of my favorite finds: pig purses! The shoulder

bed linens, robes, table runners cocktailnapkins. It was here I made a discoverythat made me wish my niece was still 5years old: Fanciful hand-made tutusand gowns adorned with feathers andsilk flowers for diminutive ballerinasand wannabes. Crowell told me they’remade by a woman in Los Angeles andthat once, for a bridal party’s last-minute purchase, she left home at 2

a.m. on a Saturday and drove to thedesigner’s shop and back to pick up twocustom-made tutus. That’s the kind ofcustomer service she’s enjoyed providingin the nearly 10 years since openingLinens & Such. Musing on the shop’sorigin, she said, “I’m an interior design-er and I felt that there was a need for[the shop]. I don’t know that there was,on reflection.” She laughed and thenpointed out a row of decorated showercaps sporting butterflies, flowers, and

little jewels — a great stocking stufferidea.

I continued in my search for giftscurious and droll, discovering severalother stocking stuffers like the foodieear buds at Sur La Table (CarmelPlaza). One ear bud is adorned with alittle cookie, the other with a tiny glassof milk. They also come in mac ’n’cheese. At the Sock Shop in the DoudArcade, socks decked out withMichelangelo’s David or a portrait of

Frida Kahlo seemed like a good way toexpress artistic tastes.

To round out my journey, I visitedthe Travel Bag in the Crossroads, whereowners Steve and Jill McAlpine alwaysseem to have interesting and useful gad-gets at the ready. They didn’t disap-point. Steve showed me the App-WriteTouchscreen Stylus. Unlike the slenderstyluses (styli?) that are easy to drop andlose, these brightly-colored tools areabout the size and shape of a guitarpick, and are much easier to grip.McAlpine said he thinks they’ve soldmore than 200 of them in the last fewweeks. The pièce de résistance, however, was a Bluetooth speaker that collapsesto a sphere just larger than a ping-pongball. Even fully extended, it’s only a fewinches high, but packs a serious sonicpunch. The store’s helpful owner, SteveMcAlpine, plugged it into a smartphone to demonstrate. It was as loudand clear as the speakers that were play-ing Christmas music throughout thestore! I know my friends who need thelatest techie gadgets would be happywith either or both of these choices.

If your holidays need a bit of lighten-ing up, you can find many appropriategifts close to home. After all, a townthat has no street lights and where thehouses have names instead of numberscan be said with pride to practically haveinvented whimsy, right?

AS 100 people took their seats on long wood-en planks for a farm-to-table dinner inside alocal barn last weekend, a young couple took

their places at the microphone. “Before you begin your meal,” they said, “we’d like

to sing you a song we wrote.”

themselves at a crossroads. They knew they could stayin Jackson Hole, where their music was beginning toplay second fiddle to the rest of their lives. Or, theycould get brave enough to “jump off,” leave town, andfollow their passion for playing, full time.

“We knew it was time to go,” says Anne, “but wethought, ‘Where in heaven’s name do we go?’ Weknew we didn’t want to go back to New England, so weheaded west. And after an amazing year of being onthe road, playing house concerts along the way, welanded on the Monterey Peninsula. When we got here,we had that sense of getting to the middle of a mazegame that says, ‘Start here,’ and you find your way tothe center.”

Before the Sibleys left Wyoming, they booked per-formances that took them first to Colorado and then

Anne & Pete Sibley bring harmony home for the holidaysa whole other world for me.”

Soon after settling in Jackson Hole, the Sibleyswere invited to sing at a local hootenanny. They pulledout a couple of songs that seemed to work, and veryquickly became regulars at the celebration, becomingfurther entrenched in the culture of bluegrass and folkmusic.

“In Jackson, we were introduced to a whole catalogof music that had just been at the edge of our musicallives, and we really took to it,” says Pete. “We’d gettogether with friends, pull out a guitar and start play-ing songs, and someone would see another instrumentlying around and pick it up. For Christmas one year,Anne bought me an old clawhammer banjo from apawn shop. I immediately fell in love with this twangyAmerican instrument and began to incorporate it intoour songs. Now I can’t imagine not having a banjo.”

After a dozen years in Wyoming, the Sibleys found

It wasn’t grace, but their bluegrass music, with itswarm harmonies and tender words, played like a prayeracross the hushed audience.

Anne and Pete Sibley grew up in Connecticut justa few miles from one other but didn’t meet until highschool choir. Their sophomore year, the choir traveledto Italy, and by the end of that 10-hour-flight, theyhad become a duet.

The young couple sang their way through highschool, mostly Broadway music, where Pete would playthe piano by ear and sing harmonies to Anne’s lead.Pete also played some heavy metal on the side, part ofa suburban upbringing, he says, where you feel youneed to rebel against something, but you’re not surewhat.

The pair separated for their first year of college butcouldn’t stand the distance, so they reunited in Ohioto finish their education. Anne studied psychologywith her sights set on social work, while Pete majoredin zoology and imagined he might go into medicine.Yet neither stopped singing.

“The music has been this wild journey,” says Pete.“There has never been a period to our story, just onelong, beautiful run-on sentence that has become thenarrative of our life. It began with how we met, how webegan singing together, and it continues with everysong we sing today.”

After the couple married, they felt a calling to moveto Wyoming and find their voices.

“My mother was moving to Wyoming, and mybrothers already had,” says Anne. “We were drawn tothat gorgeous landscape, that quiet, secluded placewhere we sensed a freer, more independent culture. Ididn’t have to think about it; it just said, ‘home.’That’s where I began to write songs, which opened up

down to Florida, up to Massachusetts, across to Texas, on to California, and“everywhere in between.”

During their first year of performing, the duo played primarily house concerts, with an occasional festival booked alongthe way. The couple, who took a blueribbon in the 2009 Great AmericanDuet Sing Off on National PublicRadio’s “A Prairie Home Companion,”

have released four CDs, with a fifth inthe works. Their performances rangefrom private gatherings to expansivepublic venues.

Now that they have settled on thePeninsula with their two small children,Anne also is teaching voice lessons, andthe deeply spiritual pair is presenting“Living in Harmony” workshops.

“Our workshops offer a deeper musi-cal experience,” says Pete. “We share ourstories, sing songs and explore deep lis-tening, the authentic self and truthsbehind living from the heart. Music can

go beyond the lyrics and chords when itdeeply resonates within us. To the verycenter of our core it brings us a sense ofjoy and peace, grounding our lives. Inthat our higher idea is to be instrumentsof peace in the world, our music and ourworkshops are intended to inspire andawaken the heart.”

Throughout the holiday season intheir new coastal community, theSibleys have replaced hootenannies withholiday house concerts and select publicperformances around the Peninsula. Asthe tree lights twinkle, and the hearth

puts a glow on the room, the couplespeak of peace and harmony, settingtheir message to music that guests maycarry it with them as a song in theirhearts as they go out into the otherwisesilent night.

Anne & Pete Sibley will performSunday afternoon, December 15 at theQuail Lodge Concert Series in CarmelValley, and on Tuesday evening, Dec. 24at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church inCarmel Valley. For more information ontheir music, visit www.anneandpetesib-ley.com.
