LAKE CITY – The Lake City boys basketball team did something on the home floor Tuesday that hasn’t been a habit in recent years, win-ning the season opening game, and the Trojans did it against a quick, scrappy Mesick squad that has traditionally given them trouble.

Lake City used effective defensive pressure and superior height to build a huge first-half lead en route to a decisive 62-34 triumph before a large, enthusiastic home crowd.

The Trojans led 28-8 at halftime and 37-19 after three quarters and allowed coach John McGiness to substitute liberally down the stretch in both halves.

“It was a very good game,” McGiness said afterward. “It’s been a while since we opened with a win and we did it against a team that’s been tough for us to beat. This was a good step in the right direc-tion.”

Lake City had a distinct advantage in height and McGiness played to it, The Trojans featured 6-foot-6 Ross Bradley in the post flanked by 6-3 forwards Nolan Davenport and Lee Stih, with 6-1 guard Seth McGiness bringing the ball up the floor and Mesick had match-up problems nearly from the start. When high-leaping 6-4 junior Adam Williams came off the bench, the match-up challenges continued for the Bulldogs.

CHEESE

In 1933 Armin Hernke started making club cheese (cold pack cheese spread) in his cheese factory just east of Hilbert, Wisconsin under the Calu-met brand. Within a few years dealers in all parts of the United States were handling Calumet Club Cheese.

In the late 1930’s the name was changed to WisPride to better reflect the proud heritage of the cheese. The pride of Wisconsin.

The Hernke family sold WisPride to Nestle Cheese Division in 1970. It was subsequently purchased by Fromager-ies Bel in the mid 1980’s.

In 1996 Fromageries Bel and Kau-kauna Cheese merged forming Bel/Kaukauna U.S.A., at which time pro-duction of WisPride Cheese was moved to our present location in Little Chute, Wisconsin.

Today, WisPride along with its sister brand Kaukauna Cheese are available nationwide and have become Ameri-ca’s preferred spreadable cheeses.

Available in cups and tubs, as well as formed into cheese balls and cheese logs/rolls.

McBAIN – It was the kind of impressive performance that has characterized the McBain boys basketball team in the years that Bruce Koopman has been at the helm of the program. The rugged Ramblers, kicking off the 2010-11 campaign on the home floor

against a pretty good Kingsley squad, applied python-like defen-sive pressure en route to a 64-47 triumph.

The Ramblers simply refused to give the Stags easy looks at the bucket or easy access to the lane. The scrap-iron tough defense paid dividends as Kingsley trailed 12-7 after one quarter and 30-15 at the half.

At the other end of the floor, smooth-as-silk sophomore guard Jared Larr paced a balanced scor-ing attack, draining a few times from beyond the arc while secur-ing a game-high 20 points. Senior strong man Cody King assaulted the iron for another nine points while fellow forward Nathan

Smith and guard Derek Vongpha-souk each tallied seven.

McBain, paced by a 12-point effort from sturdy sophomore Trevor Lutke, also won the JV game 58-40.

The Ramblers face a stern test on Tuesday, Dec. 14, when they travel north to take on Suttons Bay, another solid non-league foe. On Monday, Dec. 20, the McBain varsity plays at home against Manistee in a rare 6 p.m. start while the Rambler JV travels to Manistee to play a 5:30 p.m. game there.

The Ramblers also home on Wednesday, Dec. 22, against Big Rapids.

McBAIN – Junior post player Zach Pluger patrolled the paint with purpose on the home floor Tuesday as the Northern Michigan Christian School boys basketball team secured a season-opening 65-45 victory over Mason County Eastern.

Pluger asserted his 6-foot-4 frame inside and MCE had no answer most of the time. Pluger attacked the bucket and put 31 points on the board and he also pulled down 12 rebounds to earn a double-double. Teammate Travis Kiser nearly had a double-double as well, hitting for 10 points with nine boards.

NMC coach Dale Veddler also noted the sparkplug role of sopho-more point guard Trevor Gernaat in the fourth quarter to help get the Comets get rolling again after a scoreless spell enabled the visitors to close the gap on the scoreboard a bit.

“We were kind of stagnant there for a while and then we got going again and outscored them 17-8 in the fourth quarter,” said Veddler, who not only guided the Comets to the win in the season opener but also celebrated his 50th birthday.

Before the game, everybody in the gym stood up and sang happy birthday to Veddler. The boys on the team gave their coach a balloon commemorating the occasion. Then they went out and got the win, assuring the atmosphere would remain festive.

“It was a good night,” Veddler said. The coach credited Pluger with a strong effort inside, noting how the

returning starter used his body effectively under the boards. He also drained the nets three times from 3-point land. This was the second time in his career that Pluger has surpassed the 30-point plateau.

Gernaat hit some timely buckets in the fourth quarter and also made accurate passes, Veddler said.

The coach also noted the hard-nosed play of Kiser and the lift junior Bryce TeBos brought off the bench.

NMC played at home against Burt Lake Northern Michigan Chris-tian Academy on Thursday, Dec. 9, after this issue went to press. On Monday, Dec. 13, the Comets play at Manistee Catholic Central and on Friday, Dec. 17, at Traverse City Christian.

STANDISH – The McBain girls basketball team made its first entry in the win column an impressive one on Tuesday, going on the road to outduel non-league foe Standish-Sterling 59-40.

The Ramblers (1-2) of coach Todd Hamlet turned on the juice early and surged to a commanding 17-6 lead. Explosive junior point guard Annemarie Hamlet not only passed the ball with precision, notching eight assists, but she also drained the nets for 19 points.

Senior forward Sarah Westdorp battled with ferocity under the boards, scoring 19 points also to go with 16 rebounds.

McBain lost its first two games of the season to quality opponents, falling at home to both Morley-Stanwood and Big Rapids.

In the 59-49 loss to Big Rapids on Thursday, Dec. 2, the Ram-blers may have suffered a bit of a letdown after the fierce struggle against power Morley in the sea-son opener two nights before. The Ramblers had difficult maintain-ing an offensive rhythm and were not able to catch the Cardinals after they pulled ahead 30-25 at halftime.

Westdorp, who goes all out ev-ery time her feet touch the floor, banged bodies like she usually does in the paint, generating 17

points and 10 rebounds to pace her team. Hamlet, reliable as the sunrise, tallied nine to go with eight boards.

On Tuesday, Dec. 14, the Ram-blers are in action again at the court of Highland Conference foe Manton and on Friday, Dec. 17, the Ramblers play host to Lake City.

On Monday, Dec. 20, the Ram-blers are home against Manistee.

McB girls earn first ‘W’

time after time from teammates Brooke Veddler, Jane Pearson, Sarah Dick and others. Schoo continually generated good looks at the basket and launched shots that fell.

By the end of the game, Schoo had accumulated 24 points and had also pulled down her share of rebounds.

“Paige had an excellent game,” Sigafoose said. “They had a dif-ficult time dealing with her down low and she took advantage.”

Dick also showed up big. The senior, who only knows how to play with the throttle stuck at full speed ahead, scored 15 and many of those points came following offensive rebounds.

Pearson, the smooth-as-silk ju-nior guard, penetrated to the bucket occasionally, scoring nine points,

though most of the time she was content to maneuver the ball around the perimeter and hit open team-mates.

Senior point guard Brooke Ved-dler also played well, handling the ball efficiently and playing scrappy, hard-nosed defense.

“Brooke showed good leadership and so did Jane,” Sigafoose said. “Brittany Blackburn hustled and she also gave us solid minutes at the guard spot off the bench.”

Another NMC forward, senior Heather Dewey, played well off the bench, putting four points on the board and controlling play inside during her time on the floor.

The NMC JV prevailed over the Traverse City Bulldogs 43-38. Eighth-grader Sydney Dick made the twine dance to the tune of 16 points and Emma Towers tossed in 10 as the Comets improved to 1-1.

Lake City surged to a 14-2 first-quarter lead and never allowed the quick, hustling, scrappy Bulldogs to get within striking distance after that.

Mesick showed some real spunk, playing hard for 32 min-utes in spite of the score, and did go on a 9-0 run in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter. But the visitors could get no closer than an 11-point spread, 28-17.

Stih, who made the twine twitch to the tune of a game-high 23 points, drained a jumper to score Lake City’s first points of the second half at the 4:35 mark of the quarter. Stih’s bucket ignited a 14-2 run that extended into the first minute of the fourth quarter and pushed the Trojan lead to a commanding 42-19.

Mesick’s run early in the third quarter was one of the few nega-tives coach McGiness could point to the wake of his team’s convinc-ing victory.

“We lost some focus there and that’s something we need to work on,” McGiness said. “I told the kds before the game we need to play hard for 32 minutes and we had that stretch where we built the 20-point lead and then played kind of tentative. But they worked their way through that and that was good to see.

Also good to see from the coach’s perspective was the way point guards Seth McGiness and Caleb Davenport handled the ball and made smart passes, the way Bradley, Williams and Nolan Dav-enport played strong in the paint, the way Stih rocked the rim from the perimeter, and the way the reserves hustled and maintained

intensity on the floor when they had the opportunity to play.

Alex Peer, a 6-8 junior center, was on the floor for the final three minutes of the fourth quarter and turned in a solid performance, as did senior forward Kevin Smith. Junior point guard Jake Siler not only moved the ball efficiently but also exhibited good sportsman-ship. When a Mesick player made a mad dash to the bucket late in the first half and ended up falling to the floor, Siler reached down and helped the Bulldog player to his feet.

Nolan Davenport joined Stih in double-digit scoring, putting 12 on the board. Bradley tallied eight, in spite of missing most of the second half with foul trouble,

and Williams and Smith each scored six. Williams also brought the Trojan partisans on their feet in the third quarter with a thunder block.

Mesick senior forward Caleb Robinson turned in a gritty effort, scoring 16 and battling hard in the paint. Junior guard Randy Letts hit for seven.

Lake City faced a good test on Thursday, Dec. 9, playing at the court of non-league foe Mance-lona. The Trojans play at Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s on Tuesday, Dec. 14.

On Sunday, Dec. 19, both the boys and girls varsity teams are playing against Houghton Lake at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Coach Danielle Pettengill’s

Rangers had tired legs on Tuesday at Mesick but the girls worked through it, playing tenaciously on defense to maintain control of the contest en route to a 2-0 record. The Rangers led 31-8 by halftime.

Hailee Bundy had the hot hand for Manton, rocking the rim for a game-high 20 points and Jalyn Shepler helped the cause with an

11-point effort.Abby Simerson paced the Bull-

dogs with 11 points and six re-bounds.

115 Years AgoThe Plain DealerDecember 1895

Dec. 4 Mitchell Bros’ camp is now lo-

cated 3 miles from Stittsville with Alex McLaughlin as foreman.

It is reported that L. Cottenham killed a deer during hunting sea-son that weighed, when dressed, 307½ pounds.

A seven-pound girl came to the home of C.P. Bennett, Wednesday evening.

After the heavy snow storm last week, the “beautiful” measured about 14 inches on the level.

Dec. 11Peter Hutchinson, who was tak-

en to Ann Arbor a couple weeks previously for treatment, died at the hospital there last Wednesday. Superintendent of the poor W.J. Rouche brought the body home. Deceased had been an invalid for two or three years. Cause: consumption.

Saturday morning Levi Johnson and Curtis Sunday of Lucas were felling timber one and one half miles south west of Lucas. A tree came back across the stump and crushed Johnson’s head, killing him instantly. He was 25 years of age and unmarried. Deceased was a brother of Christ and Peter Johnson of Lucas.

James McDonnell and Miss Margaret Ford, both of Riverside Township, were married one day last week.

Geo Somers picked up a stray tramp in Norwich and brought him to town. His capture was detained a few days because he could give no definite account of himself. He seemed to be mildly insane, but harmless, and will be released.

Stittsville – Ad Oberlin is laid up with a cut arm which he received by a crosscut saw.

Morey – Green Hower’s house caught fire Tuesday morning in the roof and was blazing nicely when discovered. It progressed far enough to be seen from the post office, but was extinguished with little loss except a couple hundred shingles.

Mit McElwain left here Sunday for Copemish. He expects to re-turn shortly and bring his cousin, Fred Perigo with him.

The water in the lake is very low and the intake pipe of the water works will be extended 40 feet shortly.

The latest from Norwich regard-ing the thieving in that section is that a man named Broddy (who by the way is Marks Thornton’s father-in-law) is telling around the neighborhood that Marks Thorton and Albert Hall stole the pork from Godfrey Hirzel and he can and will prove it.

Dec. 18Nila F. Barber and Gertrude D.

Hall of McBain were married in this village last Saturday.

Our “January thaw” came early this year in the shape of rain Mon-day night and part of Tuesday. The ice broke loose along the east side, during the thaw this week and the water has raised an inch.

As soon as the needed cars can be procured, Morrison and Iverson will leave for the scene of

their future lumbering operations in North Carolina. The timber is what is called poplar there, and is said to closely resemble what is known here as whitewood.

Last Friday Norwich had an-other sensation. Marks Thornton was arrested for stealing some pork from Godfrey Hirzel last fall. Monday he was tried before a jury who said he was not guilty.

Norwich – C.S. Hill came down Monday of last week and plead guilty to the charge of assault & battery against him and paid a total fine and costs of five dol-lars. This was certainly cheap enough.

Moorestown – G. Wyma’s cow tried to swallow a whole potato, but she was saved after some hard work.

Voices

by Chris Bernard I’ve been trying lately to face

myself a little more squarely. To-night my friends and I were talk-ing about our respective Thanks-giving dinners and the vibes surrounding our experiences. I realized as we spoke that what I was saying was not really relaying my true experience; in fact, I was simply describing the sumptuous table, the physical atmosphere, the incredible feast of fine food. This was the material plane part only.

The truth was, at Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family, I felt a little awkward. It was not a free and easy, loving emotional environment. And quite honestly, I had a hard time accepting a particular man whose attitudes seemed cynical and negative to me. He’s a good friend’s grown son.

I allowed his energy and his as-sertive comments to sort of harden

Food for thought

Taking ourselves to taskme, pulling up uncomfortable barriers so I wouldn’t become so affected...affected by my own judgementalness. I felt smaller, less than gracious. I ate too much. I wasn’t grateful enough.

The next day I felt remorse, and I was beating myself up over not being all I mistakenly think I should be. I wasn’t suffering any-more over my judgment of HIM but rather poring over my own emotional inventory. I was now unflinchingly judging myself.

But I remembered a little story I’d read, and I looked back over a meditation book I’ve loved for years and I found it again.

This is the short version of the Zen tale I related recently with my friends:

Two monks took vows not to ever associate with women. While out walking one day, they came to a river that had to be forded. A woman on the bank needed to cross as well but couldn’t do it by herself.

One of the monks carried her across on his back. Once on the other side, he put her down, then the two monks resumed their journey.

After about 10 miles, the other

monk finally spoke, saying an-grily: “You shouldn’t have carried that woman.” The first monk just smiled and said, “I put her down ten miles ago. Why are you still

Here’s How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are format-ted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
