December 1, 2013 2 Welcome to St. Gerald Parish

Feasibility Study: Letters have been sent to every pa-rishioner and so input is being gathered from all those concerned and affected by the possibility of our having a combined campaign in the next several months. Your

voice is important and this is your opportunity to share your sentiments. Over the past year, I know, it has been my desire to keep you as informed as possible on the fine work the Long Range Planning Committee and the Master Plan Com-mittee have been doing. They have looked at the needs of our parish and have examined our facilities. From their work and from input you, the parishioners, provided (remember the survey we took about two years ago)…we mapped out overall goals that were to guide our parish planning. In addition we discovered some aging facilities that are in real need of upgrading. Three items on the Master Plan that are on the Feasibility Fact sheet need better explanation. I never gave them much print. 1) Window/door frame painting and caulking at 96th and Q. This refers to every frame for a window or door at that facility including all metal doors (and all the exterior doors are met-al). These things have gotten faded and are now susceptible to rusting/corrosion. The caulking around the metal frames as this abuts the brick is now dried and air/water leak in. Painting metal and applying caulk are technical works of the trade that cannot be done by volunteers. And it’s a matter of keeping our church weather proofed. 2) Soffits at 96th and Q. This includes the flat wood ceilings inside the church. These underhangs and the interior ceilings have dried out and need an application of wood preservative for both preservation purposes and aes-thetic fix-up. There is so much of this that I would question the use of volunteer labor to accomplish it. 3) Volunteer labor already comes into play in a lot of are-as of our school. But even there to make sure we have a good looking wall when it is all said and done….who wants to tell a volunteer they did a bad job. We hire one of our teachers to work with our custodians over the summer and a lot of his work is such painting. Because painting is something that has to be done by a certain time and often cannot begin until other work in a classroom is fin-ished….volunteers can only do so much. It isn’t that volunteers aren’t doing a lot of the painting; its just that they can’t do it all. 3) Furnishings: in particular the chairs in the chapel—these are part of the needs being presented on the Fact Sheet…the material is just wore, faded and stained and in some places complete-ly worn through. Over 10 years of daily use has taken its toll. Finally, I want to mention the AC at Church. Remember when we had to replace one of the com-pressors at the tune of $30,000 – well the second one is just as old and stressed. To be ready to replace it without a surprise bill for $30,000 means putting away that amount in savings to prepare. This is better planning than crisis manage-ment. How to do the Feasibility On-Line?: Go to www.steiergroup.com, select

“Client Log-in” from the “Our Clients” menu, click on “Take the Survey” and

enter the password “Gerald”. This will link you to our online survey, to be taken

at your convenience. The Philippines eeds Your Help We are sobered by reports coming in from the Philippines after Super Typhoon Haiyan slammed into that predominantly Catholic country. Thanks to extensive preparations, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is already responding. Please pray for the survivors and consider offering support to CRS in their crucial efforts there. A special collection will be taken up to help the people of the Philippines. Donations can also be made at www.CRS.org , call 1.877.435.7277, or send to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297-0303. Please give generously. You can also write a check to St. Gerald Parish and mark it clearly, Philippine Relief. We will

turned in the Tuesday before the Baptism

class. If not turned in by this deadline, you will attend the following class. This is not a walk-in class. Marriage

Religious Formation: K-8 Children of the parish are supplied with Religious Formation either in our 5-day school or in our Religious Formation Program. Regular and sus-tained Religious Formation is a life-long process. Parental support at home for their children’s reli-gious formation includes attendance at the Sun-day Eucharist, prayer at home, and support of the catechetical program of their choice. Parishioners who homeschool are encouraged to visit with the Religious Formation Director about their chil-dren’s preparations for the sacraments.

get this to CRS. Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service: An unfortunate set of circumstances has made this a difficult service to schedule. First the service was scheduled in the afternoon on the 24th, then that conflicted with the Messiah Concert downtown. Next it was moved to 7:00 pm and that conflicts with Turkey Bingo. Well, any-way, I will be there to represent the parish. St. Gerald Thanksgiving Day Mass: 9:00 am on Thursday, Nov. 28 at 96th and Q. The food collection that day goes to the Stephen Center. Also, please bring any food from you Thanksgiving Meal: Wine or Bread or…and we will bless it also at this mass. Advent Begins: Advent is a good time to get to confession. Let’s wake up and realize that we need God’s help to live good and holy lives and when we confess even the small sins we get the grace to help overcome them. Confessions are heard on Saturdays: 3:00-4:30 pm at 96th and Q as well as prior to each 12:15 pm mass. Our Parish Advent Penance Service will be Sunday, Dec. 15. Family Formation ight: The topic: "Prepare the Way of the Lord" -- Nativi-ty and Incarnation. Anyone can attend the instruction period that begins at 6:30 pm in the Gym at Lakeview on Wednesday, Dec. 4
