“Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer ...”
Speed Racer features the adventures of a young race car driver, his fabulous automobile and his close-knit group of family and friends. Originally a Japanese comic strip called "Mach Go Go Go,” the animated series Speed Racer has now become a cult classic and one of the most popular "Japanimated" series to hit the U.S. airwaves.
The Mach 5, Speed’s custom race car, is one of the most futuristic automobiles in the world. Its unique aerodynamic design and special devices — including twin rotary saw-blades, overhead bullet-proof canopy, headlight covers, a homing robot and the ability to travel short distances underwater — give the Mach 5 the competitive edge on and off the track!
• For best results: Use only high quality paints designed specifically for use on plastic model kits.
• Paints recommended for Speed Racer® MACH 5™ Model Kit#POL804:
Black (flat) White (flat)
Red (flat) Yellow (flat)
Blue (flat) Silver (metallic)
• BEFORE ASSEMBLING MODEL, STUDY SKETCH CAREFULLY.
• IMPORTANT: APPLY CEMENT TO INSIDE SURFACES ONLY.
• Avoid getting cement on outer surfaces of model sections. Use cement very sparingly and avoid getting cement on hands, so as not to mar or smear plastic surfaces. Do not hurry. Work carefully and patiently.
Note: Before proceeding to cement parts together, it is advisable to fit parts together dry (without cement) so that you may familiarize yourself with the parts and how they go together, also noting the points where cement is to be applied. For best results, assemble model exactly in the order indicated.
• This kit is molded of styrene plastic — use only styrene-compatible glues or cements. Assure yourself of a perfect model every time!

Speed Racer® Mach 5™ Assembly Instructions
Take your time — work carefully. Start with the car chassis, (part #36)
— trap, do not glue, the right (part #64) and left (part #66) front wheel uprights between the car chassis “A” arms and the front suspension top, (part #31). Place, do not glue, the tie rod (part #65) onto the wheel uprights. Assemble the wheels by gluing a wheel knockoff (parts #73 and #61) to the outer wheel (parts #32 and #44), pressing the knockoff/wheel assembly through the tire (parts #33 and #43) and gluing the inner wheel half (parts #62 and #72) to the outer wheel half. Complete the wheel assembly by gluing a disc brake (parts #63 and #71) to the inner wheel half and gluing the completed wheel to the wheel upright.
• Assemble the rear wheels by gluing the rear axle (part #70) in place and adding a completed wheel assembly (as above) to each axle end. Set aside to dry.
1 • Glue the right (part #48) and left (#47) headlights into place, then add the clear right (#46) and left (#45) headlight covers.
• If you are building the Mach 5 with its optional saw blades deployed, first glue into place the right (#49) and left (#52) blade arms, then add a saw blade (#50 and #51) to each arm.
• Decide if you want to build your Mach 5 with or without the ion jack stands deployed and add either the four ion jack stands (parts #74, #75, #76 and #77) or the jack stand covers (parts #39, #40, #41 and #42). Set aside to dry.
(#11), stick shift (#21), handbrake (#26), seats (#16 and #19) and seatbelts (#15 and #18). Complete the interior by adding the right (#10) and left (#30) door panels. Set aside to dry.
• Assemble the rear portion of the car interior by gluing the firewall (part #20) to the rear wheel well panel (#29). Next add the seat headrest (#17), the turbine engine (#54), the right (#53) and left (#56) engine parts, the oxygen tank (#55), the right (#58) and left (#60) mufflers and the inspection panel (#59). Snap, do not cement, the prop rod (#57) into place.
Mach 5 model has workable steering. The steering shaft (part
#28) inserts through the hole in the front of the interior (part #27) and passes, without glue, through the steering column (part #24); then glue it to the steering wheel, (#25). The end of the steering shaft will be inserted, but not cemented, to the tie rod when you assemble the car interior to the car chassis. Glue the end of the steering column to the instrument panel (#14) and assemble the instrument panel into place on the car interior. Now glue into place the interior parts — add the homing robot (#13), pedals (#23), dashboard top (#12), rearview mirror
2 Assemble the car body. Start by inserting, without gluing, the cover
panel for the homing robot (part #6) into place on the inside of the car body (#1). Now add the side mirror (#5), clear windshield (#4) or clear bulletproof/aqua cover (#2), right (#8) and left (#9) tail fins. Glue the engine cover panel (#7) onto the engine cover panel hinge (#22) and insert the hinge, without glue, into the car body. Add the periscope (#3) — without glue.
3 Final assembly of the Mach 5 begins by gluing the car interior and rear
wheel well panel sub-assemblies to the inside of the assembled car body. Remember to insert the end of the steering shaft onto the tie rod. The prop rod on the rear wheel well panel should swing up to hold the hinged engine cover in position. The homing robot cover panel and periscope should also remain movable.
• Complete assembly of your Mach 5 by gluing the car chassis sub-assembly into place on the bottom of the car body — being careful to align the car chassis, car interior and rear wheel well panels inside the car body. Add the water slide decals to their locations on the car body (see drawings on back), and “Go, Speed Racer, go!”
