NCIBA Honor Band...

The Southeast Valley HS band stu-dents were chosen to participate in the NCI-BA High School Honor Band. They are Han-nah Peterson, alto saxophone, and KarriganMentzer, clarinet. This years Honor Bandwill be held at Iowa Central CommunityCollege in Fort Dodge on January 10, 2015.The concert is at 5 p.m. in the auditorium ofICCC. Cost is $3 for adults and $2 for schoolage children.

The Gowrie Development Commission(GDC) Holiday Lighting Contest judging was

on Sunday, December 14.Thank you to our gracious and anony-

mous judges for taking time to visit Gowrie tosee all of our festive lights! The judges said itwas a hard task as there were so many fabulousdesigns! There were three categories again thisyear, each with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.The winners will each receive Gowrie Bucksthat can be used at any business in Gowrie.

Funeral Services for Walter Harrison,90, of Jefferson, Iowa were held 10:00 amThursday, December 18, 2014 at the First Pres-byterian Church in Jefferson. Interment wasat Lost Grove Cemetery, Lanyon, Iowa. Visi-tation with the family was held from 5:00 pmto 7:00 pm Wednesday, December 17, 2014 atSlininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson.Memorials were suggested to the family andmay be left at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home. James Walter Harrison, second son ofCharles and Bessie (Heistand) Harrison, wasborn on a farm in the Loess Hills of westernIowa near Moorhead in Monona County, No-

vember 3, 1924. With his brother, he attendedcountry schools and lived on several differentfarms in Monona, Harrison, and Shelby coun-ties. His sister, Charlotte, was born in 1931.

The family moved to a farm in Shel-by County where Walter graduated from highschool at Kirkman. After attending a businesscollege in Grand Island, Nebraska during win-ter, Walt started farming with his dad and hefarmed for 50 years in the area around Paton,Dayton, and Lanyon, before retiring and mov-ing to Jefferson in the summer of 1991. In the spring of 1937, he and his brother

Hugh confessed Christ as their Savior and werebaptized into the Christian Church at Harlanand later were members of the Church of Christin Irwin during their growing up years. In 1949, Walt married Ruth Fatka in theEvangelical United Brethren Church at Paton,and together, they raised a family of four sons:Joe of Gowrie, Kim of Alexander, IA, Mark ofLaCrosse, WI; and Todd who lives near Paton.All four sons are married and Walt and Ruthhave a ne bunch of grandchildren. Walt expressed a feeling of pride andoy to be the dad of four sonshe liked it! And

he was well aware of tremendous responsibility

that was his. Walt dearly loved his wife, Ruth. Theirswas a deep and abiding love. They were togeth-er constantly, depending on each other for com-panionship and emotional support. They werebest friends. Walt was very independent. He likedto work aloneto be creativeto make some-thing out of nothing. He liked to read, write,and travel. Walt had a ne sense of humor. Heloved the woods behind his new home, becauseit reminded him of the hills where he spent hisearly childhood. Walter was preceded in death by his par-ents, daughter-in-law Linda Harrison, brotherHugh (June) Harrison, and brother-in-law JackSmith. He is survived by his wife Ruth Harrisonof Jefferson, IA; sons: Joe Harrison of Gowrie,IA, Kim (Denise) Harrison of Alexander, IA,Mark (Ellen) Harrison of LaCrosse, WI, andTodd (friend Teresa) Harrison of Ogden, IA;

47 seconds over Harrison Haglund gaining sixpoints. Spencer Johnson and Colton Klingsonearned six each.

Riley Rittgers earned three by the 8 - 4 deci-sion in the dual with Austin Lentz. Tom Nahn-sen earned six points by forfeit. There was onedouble forfeit.

Christmas is coming the goose is get-ting fat; please put a penny in the old mans hat.If you havent got a penny, a hapenny will do.If you havent got that then God Bless You! I remember as a very little girl each yearmy Mom would recite that old English verse tome. I didnt quite understand it then but I likedthe rhythm of the poem. A half penny and apenny were the lowest coins in England and Iassume worth almost nothing. That is where ourone cent coin gets its common name of pennyas it is made of copper as were the British coins,neither of which is a part of their current coin-age. This verse was most likely quite appro-priate in its time and in our great depressiondays, the days of my earliest youth. Nine or tenof those coins would purchase a loaf of bread.

One penny would buy a big stick of candy or anall day sucker. While I was doing some computer re-search I came across some more interesting in-formation, a portion of which I will share withyou. Funeral services for Phyllis B. Chris-tensen 89 of Gowrie formerly of Callender andFort Dodge, will be Saturday, December 20,2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Saviours LutheranChurch in Callender with Rev. Jon Rollefsonofciating. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. untilthe time of the service. Burial will be in RolandTownship Cemetery, Callender. Phyllis died atthe Gowrie Care Center in Gowrie, Iowa on De-cember 16, 2014. Phyllis Berniece Christensen was born

in Callender, Iowa on September 14, 1925 toCarl an Ila (Swanson) Hanson. She attendedand graduated from Callender High School andwent on to Normal Teachers College in CedarFalls. She nished her education at Dana Col-lege in Blair, Nebraska. Phyllis was united inmarriage to Oswald Christensen on August 7,1949 at Roland Township Church. She taughtschool briey and then stayed home to raise her5 children. She later worked as a housekeeperat Trinity Regional Hospital and worked at theanimal hospital. Phyllis was a member of OurSaviors Lutheran Church, an avid reader andenjoyed dogs; having many pets throughout her

life. She is survived by her children: Charles(Neva) Christensen of Lexington, KY, Carl (Ce-leste) Christensen of Fertile, IA, Cynthia (Mike)Heires of Cedar Rapids, and Cheri Manning ofIowa Falls; eleven grandchildren: Jason Heires,Tonya (Steve) Paro, Nicole (Andy) DeVillers,Owen (Viki) Heires, Kamber (Steve) Schneider,Chi (Josh) Martin, Kendra (A.J.) Stich, CadeChristensen, Tia Heires, Parker Manning, andForest Manning and eight great grandchildren.She is also survived by two sisters, Evelyn Pe-terson of Galva,IL and Carol (Jerry) Mobley ofCedar Rapids. The Southeast Valley wrestlers madetheir way to west to Mapleton to participate inthe 10 team Maple Valley-Anthon Oto Invite.Once again , the Jags were shorthanded miss-ing a key parts of their line-up possibly costingthem valuable team points.

Former Gowrieresidents in ballet

Two former Gowrie residents enjoyed be-ing in the cast of the Nutcracker Ballet at Ste-phens Auditorium in Ames. Madaline (13) andHaileigh (10) Patton were in each of the 3 per-

formances held the weekend of December 13and 14.Madaline performed en pointe as a snow-

ake and as a Spanish dancer during the grandcelebration at Candyland as well as in the fastpaced Irish dance segment. It was her 6th yearas a member of the cast.

Haileigh was in the opening scene as wellas the Irish segment. It was her 4th year in thecast of the large production. Both girls are thedaughters of Scott and Deb Patton of Nevada.

The classical ballet was rst presented inRussia in 1892 and is a traditional holiday eventaround the world.

Southeast Valley JVJaguars roll over

West Bend Mallard Southeast Valley JV boys came out be-ing very aggressive and forced several turnovers. We were struggling putting the ball in thehoop the rst three mins of the third quarter.

The Ball started to fall after that to havea 31-2 lead at halftime. The SV Boys nishedthe game with a well balanced scoring effort.All eleven players contributed! Aaron Swieter lead the scoring with 14points; Nolan Johnson, and Tristan Ewingsev-

en; Keegan Goodwin, six; Sam Berglund, ve;Caleb Jondle and Alex Pliner had four; RutilioZavala, Nolan Brand, Tomm Lennon, and RyanGustafson all contributed two points for theJaguars.

The JV girls basketball team took tothe court twice last week. The rst game inGowrie, the Jaguars dropped a 6 - 38 decisionto St. Edmond. Then on Thursday, SoutheastValley traveled to Glidden and lost 16 - 33. Against St. Edmond, Carson Shipleylead the Jaguars with 4 points while Karissa

Hiesterman added 2. In the Glidden Ralstongame, Karissa Hiesterman and Leah Gibbonsboth score 6 points to lead the Jaguars. Les-lie Housken and Ebony Scott each chipped in abasket. Anna Hanson and Micaela Fevold bothcontributed in both games. The JV girls are now 0-4 on the season.Before Christmas break, the girls JV team willstill face West Bend Mallard, Manson NW, andHumboldt before getting some time off for theholidays. The Jaguars lost to West Bend Mal-lard 18 - 24 a week ago.

rst win of the season, beating West Bend Mal-ard 18 - 17. The following night, the Jaguarseturned to Manson, dropping an 8 - 33 decisiono Manson.

Southeast Valley JV Boys won on theroad, 51-44 in overtime against Manson North-west Webster at Manson.

MNW lead the entire game until the lastfew seconds. The Jaguars came from behind be-ing down 10 points with less than three minsto go and took it into overtime.

Leading scorers were Nolan Jonsonwith 14 points; Caleb Jondle 13; Sam Berglundsix; Tommy Lennon and Alex Pliner both hadfour; Tristen Ewing and Noland Brand withthree, and Ryan Gustafson and Rutilio Zalvalaboth had two points.

The next game for the JV Jaguars isMonday Janurary, 5 at Newell - Fonda.

The Southeast Valley JH Girls Basket-ball teams played South Central Calhoun atBurnside Tuesday night. The 7th grade pickedup a solid 27-10 victory with Makenzie Cramp-

ton and Cassie Bergland leading the way witheight points each.The Jags got outstanding wing play

from Viatris Scott and solid all around playfrom Jaynie Ferrari. The 7th grade improves to3-2 on the season. The 8th grade dropped a tought 16-12decision to the Titans however I could not bemore proud of the effort these young ladiesgave against a very good SCC team.

This was a true team effort with the girlsghting to the very end, The rst thing worthmentioning is the outstanding defensive effortsby, Kasey Lundberg, Sammy Alphs, Shelby

Cummins, Maddi Jaescke and Lanie Nelson.The Jags also got outstanding post play

from Cassidy Lambert and solid guard playfrom Morgan Castenson. The 8th grade is now2-3 on the season.

Jaguars fall to Bulldogs

The Southeast Valley 8th grade lostto Ogden 39-34. The Jags led for most of thegame, but were unable to get the offense goingto nish out the game.

The Jags had a 7-2 lead at the end of the

rst quarter and used solid defense and steals togain an early advantage. The Jags went into thehalftime break with an 18 -11 lead.

Struggling to get the ball in the basketin the third quarter proved to be costly for theJags as they fell behind for the rst time 23-20.In a wild high scoring fourth quarter the Jagscould never regain control and lost 39-34.

Points scored from the night are: Jack-son Housken, Max Davis, and Zach Gravestwo points; Dillon Sytsma, Ben Carlson, Ma-son Ackerson, Kenny Blunk, and Nyles John-son nine points; Nate Montgomery, JJ Graves,Randy Andrews, Jarrett Loseke, Carter Fluck-

iger and Mike Pearson, 12 points.

The Southeast Valley Jaguars high schoolboys basketball team defeated West-Bend Mal-lard by the score of 53-36 on Monday, Decem-ber 15th. The Jaguars were led in scoring byConner Conrad with 16 points and Dakota Jae-

schke contributed 10. The Jaguars were leading22-19 at half-time and went to some full andhalf court trapping presses to extend the lead inthe second half. There were 7 different Jaguarplayers with steals in the second half.

On Tuesday, December 16th the Jaguarsplayed a much taller team in Manson North-west-Webster. The Jaguars did not bring asmuch intensity to this game and lost 72-42.Leading scorers were Conner Conrad and Da-kota Jaeschke with 14 apiece. The Jaguars re-cord is now 4-3.

Gowrie girl St. Luciacandidate in Stratford

The Swedish festival celebrating St. Luciawas held Saturday, December 6, at the StratfordLutheran Church. The pageant was presented

by the Swedish Foundation of Iowas SwedeBend Settlement.

Candidates for the honor of being crownedSt. Lucia were required to have Swedish ances-try. Two Gowrie girls were among the 5 candi-dates. Erica Nordin, daughter of Matt and Sta-cey Nordin, had Nordin ancestors who settledin Lost Grove Township in Webster County.Roslyn Redman, daughter of Gayle Redman,had Liljegren ancestors who also settled in LostGrove Township. Roslyn was unable to attendthe ceremony.

Sierra Miller of Boxholm was crowned the2014 St. Lucia. Her name was chosen from abowl containing the names of the candidates.

During the program, traditional Christmascarols were sung in both English and Swedish.The story of the martyred St. Lucia was readnoting her charitable and kind acts of service.A warm time of fellowship was shared after theprogram.

Titans escapeJaguars, 71-63

In a rare Saturday basketball game, theSoutheast Valley Jaguars (3-2) saw their threegame winning streak snapped at the hands ofSouth Central Calhoun (4-2). Using a huge thirdquarter and early fourth quarter to their advan-tage, the Titans defeated the Jaguar boys inRockwell City on Dec. 13, 71-63.

The Jaguars and Titans began the gamelocked in a heated defensive battle, as the Jagstook a small 4-2 lead with 4:29 left in the rstquarter. SCC would respond in kind with a se-nior guard Zach Ludwig three pointer, as bothsquads would exchange leads until a ConnerConrad jumper would tie the game with twominutes remaining in the rst quarter. By therst buzzer, the Titans would hold a minuscule13-12 lead.

South Central Calhoun would apply fullcourt pressure at the start of the second quar-ter, as the Titans took a ten point lead with four

minutes left in the rst half. The Jaguars wouldclaw back into the game, as a Titan foul wouldsend Conner Conrad to the charity stripe.

Trailing by four with 2:17 left, junior LoganBoerner would draw the foul while a full courtpress gave the lead back to the teal and black.Going into the break, the Jags made use of Titanmiscues and attained a 32-28 halftime lead.

The Jaguars would continue to press earlyin the third quarter, as junior guard Cade Kingwould knock in a shot from three-land to givethe Jags a 37-30 lead with six minutes remain-ing. The Titans would respond to gain back aone point lead with four minutes left, before

grabbing a 49-43 advantage at the end of thethird quarter.

I thought that [South Central Calhoun]were a lot more aggressive in the second half,Head Coach Kyle Johnson said. We were astep slow, we are a little out of place here andthere. Overall, I think they outhustled and out-played us in the second half.

While the Titans would garner a 52-44 leadwith six minutes left in the ball game, South-east Valley would be hampered by a full courtpress and an unforgiving rim. The Titans wouldcall a timeout with 4:37 left in the contest, Con-rad would reply with a three pointer to keep theJags within six.

The Jaguars would not go away, as Kingwould visit the free throw line twice to keepSoutheast Valley within eight. After a Myles

In a battle of early season Twin Lakes Con-ference heavyweights, it was a technical knock-out in favor of an experienced South CentralCalhoun squad. The No. 4 Titans (7-0) usedgood shooting early from senior forward HaleyBirks and a solid defense to defeat the Jaguargirls (4-2), 68-28 on Dec. 13.

[South Central Calhoun] played great de-fense and theyre very big, Amber Sorenson,assistant head coach, said. Sometimes I think

we just got a little shook up, maybe should havepassed the ball a little bit more, and pulled up alittle bit sooner. But its all things that we canlearn from.

The game was scoreless until 6 minutes leftin the rst quarter, until Birks would score therst six points of the ballgame. SCC would keepscoring and take a 9-2 lead early, as Birks wouldkeep the Jaguar girls at bay with another threealong with a Jaguar turnover.

This would help the Titans garner a 10 pointlead with 2:20 left in the rst. The Jaguar girlswould continue to struggle, as the Titans led20-6 by the rst buzzer.

In the second quarter, Jaguar girls would fallinto a 20 point decit in the early season quarterdue to sloppy play, as the Titans would keep theJags from reaching double digits until a minuteleft in the rst half.

Coming back from the break, the Titans con-tinued to hassle the Jaguars and win the turn-over battle. By the end of the third quarter, SouthCentral Calhoun had the game well in hand.

We must learn from our mistakes and nothang our heads, Sorenson said. Were not go-ing to dwell on it, because its not going to getus anywhere. We dont have a lot of time, so

were going to come back on Monday and makea statement.

The girls will aim to snap their two gamelosing streak at home against a winless WestBend-Mallard squad (0-5) on Dec. 15 in Gowrie.South Central Calhoun will travel to Carroll onDec. 16.

After a foul to give the Titans a point, seniorforward Skylar Warehime would nd an easylayup to bridge the gap to six with 33 secondsleft. Sadly, an offensive foul on the Jags wouldnullify a King three pointer. After a turnover,sophomore Dakota Jaeschke would head backto the line with 12 seconds left. Luck would runout for the Jags, as Ludwig would draw the fouland seal a Titan win.

We need to work better, and [West Bend-Mallard] will pick us up on the full court manto man, Johnson said, heading into Mondayscontest with the Wolverines. We really need toget our press breaks a lot cleaner and smootherthan we were. We were working a few new kidsin, we got out of position a few times. So I thinkif we can clean that up and get some better pass-ing angles, work on our fast break when teamsfull court pressure us, then I think well do a lotbetter.

The Jaguars will look to rebound from theloss on Dec. 15, when West Bend-Mallard (1-4)comes to Gowrie. This will be the second con-test in 10 days between the Jags and the Wol-verines.
