Student Achievement Awards Moreland Takes on Maryborough From Thursday the 22nd to Saturday the 24th of November, ten students represented Moreland Primary at the 2018 Maryborough Energy Breakthrough Race. Unfortunately, the weather was horrible and the sleeping conditions were even worse. There were long and random showers of rain and it really affected our riding. The wind was even worse, we were sleeping in really compact tents, so close in fact you could hear each other talking. There were flags flapping around all night, birds screeching and lots more. But we persevered and did our best. We ate lots pasta and two very yummy curry based dishes for dinner to make sure that we had lots of protein and vitamins. During the race we ate tonnes of fruit, vegetables and sugar so that we would be able to have as much energy as possible. We also used two exercise bikes to warm up and cool down so we didn’t get muscle cramps. We had to do a presentation about our journey and how our bike was made which we were scored on. We did practice laps for two hours on Thursday to decide where we started on the grid. Then we had to race from 12:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday and from 6:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday. It was so exhilarating being in the bike going around all the sharp corners and nearly flipping. (Luckily we only flipped once!) It got so hot in the bike but we had to keep pushing our limits so we could get as many laps as possible, therefore boosting up our position on the leaderboard. At the end of the race, over 200 laps later, we finished an amazing 33rd out of 92 vehicles. The HPV experience has been amazing. All of the training sessions have been worth it and they definitely helped us on and off of the track. Thank you so much to Roxanne and Natalie and all the teachers and parents who helped out with training sessions, cooking meals for the team and showing the team so much support!
