Issue #50- Dec. 17/09HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM COMPASS ADVERTISING

Buying your first house often comes with the added responsibility of buying an entire new set of furniture & appliances. And, after a few years, you might find yourself replacing some of those appliances when they wear out. Wouldn’t it be easier to just buy quality appliances to begin with? Here are 5 different tips to keep your house looking brand new & functioning well. Let’s start.

1. When looking for appliances, one of the first things that you want to do is look for value. And by ‘value,’ I don’t necessarily mean a low price. Sometimes value means goods that are priced higher but last much longer. Some of the higher quality appliances may cost a little more than their competitors- but often times you get what you pay for. A good metaphor is a Honda Accord – while the Accord may cost slightly more than similar models, it may last 100% longer than similar cars. You want to invest in value.

2. Inspect the warranty information. These days, warranty can last anywhere from 0 days to 10 years or even longer. If you are paying extra for an appliance that comes with an extended warranty, make sure the warranty is from a reputable company that’s not going anywhere. There have been several news articles recently of companies that can’t honor their warranty because they have gone bankrupt..after all, a long term warrantee from a company that’s no longer in business isn’t worth very much! Do you homework on the company offering the warranty.

3. Check for customer reviews. Before investing your money in an appliance that doesn’t live up to its claims, do a little research. There are tons of review services out there- it’s not only Consumer Reports anymore. Today, there are review sites for every type of product you can imagine. Listen to other people who’ve already purchased what you are looking to purchase- what was their experience? Would they buy it again- did it live up to its claims?

What did they like & dislike about it? While this information is free, it’s VERY valuable.

4. Energy efficiency. This is a big one that many people over look, which is kind of strange give the skyrocketing cost of energy during the last few years. This is especially critical information when you are looking at replacing your HVAC unit. This is because, in some climates, your HVAC bill can account for as much as 75% of your total power bill. Luckily, many of the major appliances now come with stickers that indicate how much power the appliance consumes.

5. Here’s a tip that I haven’t heard written about much, but it makes sense: be realistic about the future needs of your household...You need to plan your purchases based on your realistic future needs. For those of you starting new families or who plan on having more kids in the future, remember that when you are shopping for new appliances. What may be an acceptable washer & dryer size for 2 people, might not be big enough for the clothes of 4.

It’s not uncommon to get a bit tired of areas of our home where we spend a lot of time, especially if nothing has been updated for a number of years. The thought of re-working a room can be daunting at times, so it’s important to actually know where to start the process.First things first – gain inspiration from a fabric you love, or find an accessory (such as a rug, throw or cushion) that completely catches your eye. Whatever you choose will form the basis of your new color palette for the room and give you something to build from.Patterned fabrics are great for dressing up a room and giving it a fresh look. They can be used in a number of ways:• Cover furniture or parts of furniture, from a chair cushion to an entire sofa • Create panels for curtains • Cover a divider screen. A useful style tip for the ‘pattern-novice’ as the screen can always be re-covered or moved to a different room if you change your mind. Another benefit is that you can take it with you when you move house • Something as simple as stripes can bring together a range of colors and can be useful for giving you a palette to work with. Consider the scale of the pattern when deciding what you want to use it for. A large-scale pattern may be too much for a small living. Similarly, a small-scale pattern could

add a delicate look to a large room or make a smaller room appear more spacious. It’s a good idea to take samples of fabric and place them over different areas in your room to get an idea of how it will look. I love adding texture! Texture is important when building a room because it adds homely ‘layers’ and movement. It’s also an interesting way to keep the color palette flowing throughout, without making it too uniform. Textures you may want to consider for your home would include velvet; faux suede; leather; flocked cottons and silks; chenille or crewel (wool embroidery). These fabrics not only look good, but provide plenty of comfort as well.

The last thing you want to do is walk into a room and feel like there’s too much going on. A successful room needs to have balance. Too much of one color, pattern or texture will make a room look busy. Break up color with neutral tones to give your eyes a rest. Your main living space is a place to relax, not be overwhelmed – so be careful not to overload. The trick to great decorating is to blend well – each room must transition into another. And of course the rule “less is more” is something that should always be kept in the back of your mind. Too many fluffy cushions in one place can create a “poodle corner” effect. With balance being of equal importance, there are some tips you can use to incorporate this aspect in your room. The best place to start is to create a floor plan so you can clearly see where your windows, lighting and furniture are positioned. Once this is determined, you can then decide which fabrics to put where. Keep large objects (such as the sofa) in a fairly plain fabric, particularly if the room is small. You can always add accent cushions or throws with color and pattern to liven up the piece – and change them out when you want a fresh new look for the season. Before purchasing drapery, consider how many windows the room has and where they are positioned. A wall of windows with heavily patterned curtains may risk looking too busy when the drapery is drawn.Don’t forget to use magazines for inspiration – tear out pictures of furniture items, rooms, colors and patterns and create your own scrapbook of ideas that you can use as a point of reference. Experiment and have fun through the entire process! E-mail your decorating questions and photos to [email protected] or visit website www.kohon.ca.

dding a breath of fresh air to a room can be as easy as revamping your fireplace mantel décor. Even if you don’t have a fireplace you can add a floating mantel as a focal point or an accent. Simply find a mantel that you like and install it

according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Then comes the fun part: adding a bit of your personality to your fireplace mantel.

Ideas for Decorating a Mantel

Whether you have a wood-burning, gas, or electric fireplace, these ideas can inspire you:

* Pick a Theme - Your fireplace mantel décor should blend with the rest of your room. If you pick colors that will stand out, stay in the same color tone as your current decorations. Pick pieces that complement the style of the room, whether it is a contemporary, rustic, or modern design.

* Start from the Bottom Up - Fabric or lace accents add romance when draped on your mantel. Be sure not to hang your drape too low, as it may burn or catch fire.

* Use Symmetry - Fireplace mantel décor has changed from the days when you needed two matching vases to create symmetry. Try balancing with color, shapes, or sizes; for example, balance a vase with candles of similar height at either end of the mantel.

* Try Layering - You don’t want your mantel to look cluttered, but by using items of different heights and shapes you can create texture and depth.

* Prop Up Art - Instead of hanging mirrors or art, try propping them against the mantel for more casual, interesting fireplace mantel décor.

* Use Nature - Driftwood, shells, pressed leaves, and dried flowers can give you striking fireplace mantel décor look for less.

* Back to Basics - A mantel clock is always the traditional option if you’re having trouble with your fireplace mantel décor.

Mantel decorating can give you the opportunity to add your personality to any room with a fireplace. By experimenting and looking for unusual touches to complement the rest of your room, you’re sure to come up with an arrangement that is not only the focal point of the room, but a reflection of who you are.

Safety First for Fireplace Tools

A fireplace can be warm and inviting, but a fire can be extremely dangerous. Many tools you use for your fireplace will be going directly into the fire, so you need to make sure they are fire-resistant and safe for you to handle. Obviously, anything that does go into the fire should be made of a durable material, such as wrought iron. But if you don’t like the look of wrought iron, there are plenty of other materi-als you can choose from that include brass, copper, bronze, nickel, graphite, stainless steel, pewter, and more. In addition, a good pair of fire-resistant gloves will prevent your hands from burning.

Fireplace Tools and Your Home Décor

Safety and functionality are key components to choosing the right fireplace tools for your fireplace, but these tools are also decorative pieces that add style to your fireplace and your home. As a result, you don’t want to just choose the first set that you see. There are many different styles available, from traditional to contemporary, that can complement the current design of your home. Use your current home décor as a guide when you choose the look of your new fireplace accessories. If you’re looking for something with an antique feel, don’t buy the sleek stainless steel fireplace tool set. Wait until you find the set that works for you.

I love Christmas trees, especially the real big ones, but many of us have practical size requirements. Very often we may have limited space, either at home or perhaps at a secondary location like a front hall or office. Smaller trees are perfect for these locations, and are typically called tabletop Christmas trees.

So what is the definition of a tabletop Christmas tree? It’s simply a smaller tree. It may or may not sit on a tabletop, for example I have a small one in the office sitting on the floor in an unused corner.

A tabletop Christmas tree might be a natural live tree, but just a smaller one, say 3 or 4 feet tall. It can also be a potted tree, for example a decorated bonsai or topiary or even a Norfolk Island Pine. Ceramic ones are popular as well as my mother has one I made for her in ceramics class when I was 7 years old.

Most tabletop Christmas trees however are artificial trees, which you can use and reuse every year. Common heights are around three foot tall to perhaps 4 ½ or five feet tall. You can get high quality trees that look extremely real, sometimes looking like a specific tree, for example a green or blue Monroe Pine, Aberdeen Pine, Alberta Pine, Douglas Fir, Mountain Fir and more. You can also choose a tree that doesn’t resemble a natural tree and silver and red are popular colors.

Each year I buy a large natural tree, maybe 7-8 feet tall, plus I also have two artificial tabletop trees. One is silver and goes on a table in the front of the house and one is a natural looking artificial tree that

goes in my office.

I went with artificial for the tabletop trees for convenience reasons. Quick setup, no watering, no pine needles to pick up, no trip to select and buy a tree and no hassle getting rid of the tree afterwards either. You however may prefer a natural tree, which obviously will have a lovely aroma missing with my tabletop choices. Artificial is also more economical. Here in rural New Hampshire a natural tree, whether tabletop size or other, costs about fifty dollars and up. I’m sure they are much more expensive in other places. But I can buy a high quality artificial tree for anywhere from $39 and up, and reuse it every year. And I can even buy a cheapie for less, although it will not last as long.

If you are considering a tabletop Christmas tree, there are several things you must decide. Size is obviously one, and will depend on where you will be placing the tree. Of course trees always look bigger

inside your house, office, or apartment so err on the smaller side. And are you considering a real or artificial tree? If artificial, do you want a natural looking one or perhaps a silver, red, or other color. There are plenty of decisions to make, but if the tree fits, that’s really all that matters!

(NC)—Cocktail party season is in full swing. ‘Tis the season to entertain family and friends with festive gatherings. From the hottest drinks and passed canapés, to how you can make your home look and feel like the most chic lounge in town, we’ve tracked down the insider’s tips for fabulous entertaining.

Sebastien Centner, one of Canada’s premiere event planners, answers frequently asked questions on throwing the perfect holiday soirée.

I never really know how many canapés to have on hand for a cocktail party. Is there a magic formula? For a typical cocktail party you’ll want between 4 and 6 canapés per person per hour. For a party which begins at 7pm and ends around 10pm, I would recommend between 12 to 18 canapés total per person. You don’t need 18 different canapés, choose six and prepare 2 or 3 of each per person.

Between work and family commitments, I don’t have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen but want to impress my guests. Do you have any spectacular, but easy canapé ideas? It’s all about the presentation. It can take an ordinary item to extraordinary with very little effort. One of my personal favourites is the lollipop canapé.Imagine balls of herbed cream cheese wrapped in smoked salmon; or white chocolate dipped brownies sitting atop fine skewers. Any item that can be skewered can be made into a lollipop canapé. To serve, simply make a skewer holder by cutting either a green apple or a large eggplant lengthwise, and poke the bases of your lollipops into it.

I’ve figured out the food, but how do I create a holiday mood or atmosphere?Obviously, florals like poinsettias – white are especially striking – and themed decorations play an important part in setting the mood. But if you’re looking for that ‘je ne sais quoi’ think of scent. To bring a room to life, I like Febreze NOTICEables in a holiday scent like Cranberry & Frost.

I’m going to a neighbour’s holiday open house. Can you suggest an appropriate hostess gift?Something small and thoughtful is always appreciated. Think beyond Chardonnay. In keeping with the holiday spirit, present your host with a Febreze scented candle in a holiday aroma such as Winter Evening and Warmth. Not only do these smell great, they also make a lovely visual accent.

Every year we face an uphill battle with our Christmas Tree. We have several cats that are absolutely fascinated by anything new in the house. These are outdoor cats and run around our trees outside like they are squirrels. So when they see a tree inside, they can resist checking it out. We have an artificial Christmas Tree but sometimes we get a live one just for a change. The cats know the difference and although any tree will do, they seem to prefer the live ones, probably due to the smell.

Now add some flashing lights, bubble lights that constantly provide live action, shiny colored swinging balls, hanging tinsel, and you have an irresistible new cat toy. And then there’s the presents under the Christmas Tree. We have one cat, a calico named Baby, who burrows into the pile and finds a great place to take a nap.

Our black cat, Blackie, prefers to climb up into the center of the tree for her naps. And then there’s the youngest cat, named Fluffy that wants to run and jump as close to the top of the tree that she can. Fluffy thinks she is Air Jordan and making the 10 to 12 foot leap is good for extra points. And it appears to be even more fun when Fluffy is chasing Blackie and they both hit the tree at the same time.

Some years our Christmas Tree goes down every other day. We’ve tried everything to keep the cats off the tree but nothing seems to work. Since we are typical cat owners, we’ve come to live with the chaos and just roll with it. Almost all of our tree decorations are sturdy by design and can take a few falls and still survive one more season. And I do take some extra time when I setup the Christmas Tree to make it difficult to easily knock over.

I have made some progress with the bubble lights. I’m sure you’ve seen the type I mean, I douse them with pepper spray now and that keeps Fluffy from munching on them. It’s not unusual to walk into the living room where the Christmas Tree resides and see Baby snuggled up in the presents, Blackie somewhere nestled in the branches, and Fluffy sitting somewhere near the top trying to decide her best way back down.

One year we put the Christmas Tree in the den and tried to keep the door shut so the cats wouldn’t be able to get in without someone being there to keep them at bay. But Fluffy knows how to get a door open one way or another. If you don’t make sure you shut it all the way it’s a piece of cake for any of the three cats to open. But Fluffy has figured out the doorknob and now it’s open season no matter how well you shut the door.

When someone new comes to visit during the holidays they are don’t notice the cats in the presents or on the tree until one of them makes a sudden move or noise. Baby especially blends in with the presents since she is a calico. And unless she moves, some think she’s either a stuffed animal or decoration. And once in awhile Blackie will poke her head out to see who’s there, now that can really catch unknowing visitors by surprise.

Our cat adventures have become part of the Christmas season and make for a little extra excitement on some days. Even on Christmas morning when everyone is opening presents the cats are right in the thick of it. umping into any open box, rolling in the wrapping paper, and playing with any ribbon to be found. Our cats love Christmas, they get to have a bunch of new toys and trouble to get into for several weeks.

Cats and Christmas

TreesIf you are like the majority of people, you do not have a lot of time during the holidays to make special decorations. You can make your holiday decorating quick and easy and create a festive atmosphere in your home without spending a lot of time and money, leaving you more time to enjoy the holiday season with your family. Here are some holiday decorating tips that are free and inexpensive that will require very little effort:

Tableware:Use festive tableware for every meal during the month of December. Search your cupboards and drawers and get out anything that looks remotely festive. You can also shop discount and one-dollar stores and find many items for the holidays that you can use every year. You can add to your collection of holiday tableware each year and soon you will have many types of dishes that will make your holidays special.

Bows:Try decorating with bows. Ribbons tied around chairs, plants, candlesticks, drapes, stairs and doorknobs make wonderful decorations. Place bows and ribbons in many locations throughout your home for a festive look that is quick and easy. The bows and ribbons

do not have to be green and red. You can try many colors or match the bows and ribbons to the colors you have in your home. Choose ribbons that you can reuse each year. When the holidays are over, pack the bows and ribbons carefully so that you can use them again and again.

Wreaths:Put a holiday wreath on every door in your home. Use real pine, holly, and grapevine and decorate with berries, fruit and pinecones. If you purchase artificial wreaths you will be able to use them year after year.

Candles:Arrange many candles around the room and turn the lights off during holiday meals. You will create a special, festive atmosphere that will be remembered and anticipated by your family each year. A fire in the fireplace each night will add to the holiday spirit. You can also arrange candles in your bathroom and around your bathtub. Watch small children carefully when you decorate with candles.

Holiday decorating does not have to be difficult or expensive. Simple decorations throughout your house will make fond memories for your family and will be anticipated year after year. Make sure to put out plenty of scented potpourri and scented oils in various locations throughout your home.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM COMPASS ADVERTISING

Generally, fruit cakes are labeled as typical Christmas dish, but always remember that fruit cakes have century’s old tradition behind it. Did you know that back in the 13th century, dried fruit started to arrive in England from Portugal and the east Mediterranean? During the later half of 1700s, English people gave fruit cake slices to women who sing Christmas carols. Fruit cakes were commonly used in celebrations from the turn of the 18th century. It became a tradition in England for single wedding guests to put a slice of dark fruitcake under their pillow every night so they could dream of the person they will marry one day.

The fruit cake has enticed people all over the globe for centuries. As soon as you take a lip smacking bite, you will experience a taste of culture and valued traditions over the years. The fruit cake which I would like to offer you is loaded with fruits and nuts in proportion to the batter. The kind of fruit cake that I bake will make you savor the rich French cherries, the almonds, the California nuts, the pineapples, orange peels and lemon added with a dab of brandy. In this article, I won’t be discussing how the fruit cake is made since it’s a common recipe that almost everyone bakes during Christmas, instead, I will be citing important points and techniques that you could use to make the fruit cake more enticing.

For people who would want to go for a stronger aroma and sharper flavor, then you can make a darker version of the fruit cake. A dark fruit cake mostly contains prunes, dates, cherries, walnuts, brown sugar and molasses.

However, if you prefer the subtle taste, then you can also make a light fruit cake. Unlike dark fruitcake, the light one mostly contains granulated sugar, golden raisins, pineapples, apricots and the light corn syrup.

When you go for a trekking and camping, make sure to put a lot of fruit cakes in your backpack. Your friends will surely love you for this simple delight. The best thing about fruit cakes is that it they last for months and still maintains its essential flavor.

Always remember that in preparing a fruit cake, it is important to take your time to make it perfect. Thus, patience is the key. It is important to prepare the nuts and fruits that you will be using and soak it with liquor or brandy over them. Keep the mixture well covered for about two or three days. Though some recipe would only require an overnight marinate of nuts and fruits, I strongly recommend soaking for a day or tow to infuse the flavor of brandy in the fruits and nuts. After 2 to 3 days, you may start preparing the batter and bake them. Just remember that the fruit cake should be baked on a low temperature. Covering the pan with waxed paper will keep the sides of the cake from burning.

If the return of the martini and it’s recent rediscovered popularity has you feeling left out while you’re making a cock-tail, then it’s time you tried a chocolate martini. Let’s face it, if it

wasn’t for the vermouth, a martini is really just straight vodka. For someone who doesn’t like straight vodka a martini can taste kind

of harsh. The solution is try one of the many specialty martinis that are packing them in at martini bars. And one of the tastiest martinis around is the chocolate martini. There are a few different ways to

make chocolate martinis and all of them are delicious.Chocolate Martinis are made with vodka. Gin and chocolate sounds like a terrible idea to me so thankfully I haven’t seen a recipe like

that. Most recipes call for vodka which is mixed with something chocolaty like Godiva Liqueur or Creme De Cacao. This first recipe

contains both.

• 1 1/2 shots Godiva Chocolate Liqueur• 1 1/2 shots Creme De Cacao

• 1/2 shot Vodka• 2 1/2 shots Half & Half

Add all to a cocktail mixer and shake wellPour into a chilled martini glass dusted with

chocolate powder

The official chocolate martini recipe endorsed by Godiva is as follows:

• 1 oz. Godiva Chocolate Cream Liqueur• 1 oz. Ciroc Vodka

Shake until blended and pour into a chilled Martini glass.

A Hershey’s Kiss is a great garnish for a chocolate martini. I’ve even seen some bartenders

who drizzle chocolate syrup around the rim of the glass.

And if your looking for an easy way to make a chocolate martini why not

try one of those pre-made cocktail mixes. You should

be able to find a few different mixes at your

local liquor store. All you have to do is add

vodka and you’re all set. It doesn’t get much easier

than that.No matter what recipe you choose you really can’t go

wrong. If you think about it, you’re mixing vodka and chocolate. It would be

difficult to make those ingredients taste bad.About the Author: Written by Anthony Tripodi

Cheese. Just a mere mention of the word and one would think of sumptuous appetizers or meals served with them. Cheese, when served with wine, depicts impeccable taste and class. Here is but one of the many varieties of cheeses: Meet the Feta Cheese.

Feta (from the Italian word ‘fetta’ meaning ‘slice’) is actually cheese curd in brine solution. It takes at least three months to make feta. When it is removed from the solution, this type of cheese dries up immediately. Milk from goats, sheep or cow can be used to make this.

The color of Feta cheese is white. It is usually formed into four-sided cakes that can either be soft or semi-hard. Its salty flavor can be adjusted to suit the taste of the maker.

Traditionally, in Greece, feta cheese is made with just goat’s milk or a combination of goat’s and sheep’s milk. They are first salted as a slab, then sliced, then salted once more before it is subjected to maturation process.

Other countries that make feta cheese include: Albania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia, Ukraine, Romania, Iran, Australia, Denmark, Germany and many other countries. Although feta is called differently in each country, the process of manufacturing it is the same.

The first historic record of feta cheese was during the Byzantine time. One Italian who visited Candia (in 1494) made a vivid description of the brine solution used in making feta cheese. Additional records are those of Balkan peasants who made it either with sheep’s or goat’s milk.

Nowadays, cow’s milk can be used to make feta cheese. The processes involved are: curdling of the milk with rennet, separation and draining of the curd, putting salt on the blocks of curd, slicing the slabs which are then salted once more.

Feta is usually used in making salads and is much tastier when combined with tomatoes, olives and green vegetables. One can store feta cheese indefinitely because of the salt solution. A wise tip: if you want to reduce the saltiness of the cheese, soak feta

first in milk or water (just for a few minutes) before eating.

Now here is some important nutritional information: it contains 30-60% fat of which 45% is fat from milk. The caloric content is 100 calories per small slice. Whether that’s good or bad for you is a question you need to ask your nutritionist.

There were actually some studies that were done to lower the salinity of feta cheese and how this has significantly improved its nutritional value. The conclusion was, it has good and bad points. The good: it is a superior source of riboflavin, protein, calcium, phosphorus and Vitamin B12. The bad: it has a high cholesterol and sodium content. It comes with high saturated fat.

Another downside to eating feta cheese: pregnancy would not allow feta cheese consumption. Since feta is made from unpasteurized milk and comes in soft, it may contain a type of bacteria called Listeria. Although Listeria registers symptoms like that of the common flu and can be tolerated by adults, it is highly fatal to fetuses.

Could you take another bad news? It is very difficult to get the real thing in the country. Since it is highly consumable in Greece and because of the restriction on importing products made with unpasteurized milk, North Americans can have a taste of feta through commercial counterparts. Although the commercial feta cheeses are inferior in most aspects, at least they are the closest we could get to feta taste. If you are looking for the ‘original’ cheese, then be prepared to pay exorbitant fees!

Enough with the bad. There are more good to this type of cheese than the occasional bad. Feta cheese is used in a lot of sumptuous recipes which stimulate the taste buds and it is highly-incorporated in most Greek meals.

Christmas foods are a wonderful ad yummy part of the holiday season. Candies and desserts being a favorite – at least in my book. Fudges, cookies, cakes, and all the other delicious additions to our days that make the holiday season just a bit sweeter. This is the time of year where diets are tossed out the door, and wonderful desserts take their place in the forefront of our minds and imaginations.

The holiday season is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends. Whether shopping the day away or relaxing by a fire with a loved one sipping on a cup of cocoa with or without marshmallows, you will find this is the season when sweeter is better.

Of course, exploring some of the delicacies of the holiday season can be just about as sweet as actually partaking of them. Take a look at a few Christmas foods that are traditional parts of many households and generations of families.

Fudge says it all! What is more traditional when it comes to Christmas foods than wonderful chocolaty fudge? This creamy delicacy is sweet and creamy. Whether you like yours with or without nuts, you will find fudge is always a crowd pleaser. Wrapped fudge makes an awesome gift as well as a great addition to the holiday table.

Nowadays, fudge comes in other varieties rather than just chocolate. For instance, peanut butter fudge is more popular than ever. There are even other types of fudge you can make by using your imagination and a good cookbook.

Divinity is divine!Divinity is a light and delicious candy difficult to make but scrump-tious to eat. Divinity is generally one of those candies isolated to the holiday season. However, divinity is delicious anytime of the year. You will appreciate the wondrous world of divinity each holiday season, and the light-ness of this candy makes it a favorite Christmas food every year.

Sugar cookies are children friendly! One of my favorite holiday traditions is making sugar cookies. Add

frosting and some sprinkles, and you have a delicious treat good for any day. In addition, children will love to munch on these, but they will have even more fun making them. The dough is easy to handle,

add some cookie cutters, and you have a wonderful day of family fun perfect for children of every age.

Ginger bread for houses and more!Nothing is quite as traditional as a ginger bread house. Each delicate piece is a wonderful addition to more than just taste. Ginger bread makes the whole house smell wonderful! You will also find it looks awesome. Kids and adults alike have fun adding the frosting and arranging their house with little gumdrop bushes and candy cane poles.

Ginger bread cookies are also great! You will love how these ginger bread men just scream holiday spirit.

Christmas food is a mix of tradition and modern day fun. Whether you are making cookies or candies for your own pleasure or as gifts, there is something to be said for these delicious edibles that are a taste sensation with every bite.

Issue #50- Dec. 17/09Page 28 HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM COMPASS ADVERTISING

Candy canes are great, but the time has come to think outside the sock! Forget the gift exchange and bring in the holidays with a ‘Stocking Stuffer’ party instead. Get those creative juices going! Stocking stuffers are generally little gifts that are inexpensive; candies and fruits and make thoughtful additions to this wonderful time of year.

· Start a family tradition of placing oranges in everyone’s stocking, to eat Christmas morning. · Bags of French Clay Recipe: Combine 1 cup flour, 1-cup salt, 1 tbsp. cream of tartar, 1 tbsp. oil, 1- cup water, food coloring and one-quarter tsp. peppermint extract into a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly for 3 to 5 minutes, until mixture forms a ball. When cool, knead until smooth. Divide into balls and place in airtight containers. Give this gift to children or people at your office that need an outlet for their frustrations.· Disposable camera: With all of the activity going on during Christmas, you probably don’t have time to take pictures and document the day. Let your friends and family members take on the job. Note: Choose a camera suitable for indoors.· Gold Chocolate also known as, “Snowman Soup”: Into a holiday mug place 1 pkg. hot chocolate mix, 3 chocolate kisses, 15 mini marshmallows (in a baggie), one candy caneAdd this poem: ”Was told you’ve been real good this year

Always glad to hear itWith freezing weather drawing near

You’ll need to warm the spiritSo here’s a little snowman soup

Complete with stirring stickAdd hot water, sip it slowIt’s sure to do the trick!”

· Homemade Christmas Ornament Recipe: In a large bowl mix; 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, half tsp. cinnamon, half cup water. Stir and add one more half cup water. Knead until the dough is smooth, this can take up to 10 minutes. If dough is runny add more flour. For flat dough ornaments roll out the dough and cut with; cookie cutters, play dough molds, Jell-O molds, and clay molds to create unique designs! Dust dough with flour and begin to add details to the ornaments with a toothpick, Popsicle stick, and knife. Use a straw to make a hole so you can hang the ornament. Bake at 325 degrees for approx. one and a half to two hours (or until dry). Let cool. Decorate with acrylic paints, glue on beads, buttons, sequins or lace. To preserve ornaments, coat with acrylic varnish or spray with clear sealer.· Theme pillowcase: Pillowcases are very easy to sew by hand or machine. Choose fabric that represents the receiver’s hobbies: golf balls, princesses, donuts or chipmunks etc. Since it’s a stocking stuffer, you only need to make one! Fill the pillowcase with gifts that match the theme of the pillowcase.· Assortment of batteries: Instead of wrapping batteries, separate them into stocking stuffers. Since you may need to purchase them anyway, they aren’t an extra expense. By separating them out, you make a start on your stocking stuffing and the recipient’s will love them because they can immediately start playing the electronic devices they receive.

· Good Enough for the Queen Tea recipe: Mix together half cup instant ice tea, 2-cups orange crystals, 2-cups sugar, 1 package instant lemonade, 1 and three quarter tsp. cinnamon, 1 and a half tsp. ground cloves. Separate into smaller portions. Package in tightly covered containers. Include the following instructions: To serve: Combine 2 to 3 teaspoons of mix with one cup of boiling water. Stir well. (Makes 32 cups of tea)· For the handsome man in your life: An all-in-one screwdriver will come in handy at home, the office or in the car. He’ll appreciate a tire gauge that he can keep in his glove compartment or trunk. Other items to consider are a corkscrew, flashlights in various sizes, pens, pencils, pocket knife or calculator.· Paper airplane patterns: Why not use your computer know-how to print off several different patterns for paper airplanes, one for each member of the family? Tuck one unfolded paper into each stocking and have a distance flying contest on Christmas morning.· Whisk: Purchase a kitchen whisk and fill it full of chocolate kisses with a note that says, “We whisk you a Merry Christmas”.

Christmas Cookie Tips:After being thanked by my good friend Gord for sending him “cookie crumbs” a few years back I reevaluated my cookie packaging concept. So, if you decide to mail batches of homemade cookies to someone special, keep the following kitchen secrets in mind.

· To keep flavors from changing or blending with others, pack cookies in separate containers or wrap different types separately within a container.

· Use sturdy foil-lined containers or tins. Wrap round cookies back to back in pairs, stacked flat or on end. Layer bars between sheets of waxed paper. Cushion well with tissue or waxed paper up to the top of the container to keep them snug.

· Place crumpled newspaper, shredded paper or popcorn below, above and between containers to cushion them in the shipping box.

· Seal the box with shipping tape and cover the address label with clear tape for protection. Mark the package clearly with the word “perishable” to encourage careful handling.

(NC)—It’s a well known fact: most men hate holiday shopping. The staff and readers at RedFlagDeals.com, Canada’s largest shopping information and bargain hunting website, have put together a list of tips that will help men everywhere stay sane during the craziest shopping time of the year.

1. Plan Your Attack. When shopping, make like a ninja -- get in and out before anyone knows you are even there. If you must go to the mall, prepare in advance. You should know what you’re looking for, how much it costs, and where to get it before you leave the comfort of your home. When shopping online, shipping times will vary, so expect orders to take at least a week to arrive.

2. Tune Out. Bring your MP3 player with you when you go shopping. Your

music may not be festive, but at least it won’t drive you crazy.

3. They have shopping on the Internet now. The third tip is the most obvious: shop online. You’ll save money, avoid the crowds, and find multiple gift ideas with the click of a button. Browse your favourite stores online. You’ll save a lot of time by comparing price, availability, and reviews of products on the Internet.

4. Support the Trend. If you’re stuck for ideas, find out what other people are getting your shopping target and get them something that compliments that gift. Is someone getting them skis? Buy them ski goggles and ski wax.

Hey Jason I got a quick joke for you:A group of Saskatchewan friends went

deer hunting and paired off in twos for the day. That night, one of the hunters returned

alone, staggering under the weight of an eight-point buck. “Where’s Henry?” the

others asked. “Henry had a stroke of some kind. He’s a couple of miles back up the

trail,” the successful hunter replied. “You left Henry laying out there and carried the

deer back???” they inquired. “A tough call,” nodded the hunter. “But I figured no one is

going to steal Henry!”

It was made a legend in songs and performance. The Chevrolet Corvette was lovingly known just as the “Vette”. The Vette was and still is a high speed performance car. It started out a a little sports car and now is grown up to a relatively large sports car. The earlier ones were made out of fiberglass. Come to think of it, the light weight would help save gas today. Unfortunately, the fiberglass didn’t offer much protection and you could easily punch a hole in it. The 1967 Stingray was born were an engine that taught you what it was like to pull G’s while still on the ground.

Factory Hot Rods became real in October of 1963, when the GTO was born. At this time, the Corvette began to grow in size and weight. It was truly becoming an American hot rod/sports car with looks to kill and performance to match. The Vette came in the 409 engine and then later move up to large horsepower engines. These powerhouses package included a 400-horsepower V8 with dual exhausts, a Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor, a mild hydraulic camshaft, and the kind of whip lashing neck pain street-grabbing torque that left a smile on your face. Other standard features included a manual three-speed transmission with a Hurst shifter (in those days the Hurst shifter was not only very good but also very cool), a heavy-duty clutch (very much needed), heavy-duty suspension, US Royal red-line tires, a 3.23:1 rear axle ratio, and the famous Corvette emblem. The Vette emblem itself was just as famous as the car and was easily recognized.

What Made The Chevy Vette So Coveted? Some things you never forget such as my 1967 Stingray and Jan & Dean Dead Man’s Curve. It was a good thing it had a windshield because I would have had bugs stuck to my teeth from grinning so much. The thrill of standing still, shifting into first gear, revving up that sweet engine and letting out the clutch and being plastered to the back of the seat was pure adrenaline pumping. That was my

first experience of “pulling G’s”. Last time I felt that type of adrenaline rush was during chopper auto-rotations in Nam. That was 40 years ago and I still love my Vette. Maybe it is the legend. Maybe we have gotten the legend mixed up with reality. All I know is I can’t help but smile when I remember my little Vette.

It is hard to explain to my children why it was so special. I owned a 1955 Ford though it was pretty it just didn’t have the appeal of the legendary Corvette. The royal blue was my favorite. I have a friend whose color was plum. Can you remember vinyl seats? I can! They were cool looking and very hot functionally. I remember leaving my skin on the seat many times getting out that car. Getting in the summer meant either cooking your legs or trying to keep a towel in the car to sit on. Once you started up that 409, you were transported to another world. The purr of that engine, the feel of the Hurst shifter and watching the gas needle drop was worth all the pain of sitting on a hot seat. What hot seat? Oh yeah, 4 mpg! It was a good thing gasoline was only 15 cents a gallon back then.

Head Into Winter With ConfidenceAttention!! Hyundai Owners

You don’t need us to tell you that Canadian winter weather brings special challenges with it. There’s no better way to deal with them than by ensuring your Hyundai is in top condition before the first snow falls. When you bring your vehicle to your Hyundai dealer, it will be serviced by specially trained professionals who spend each and every day working on Hyundai vehicles. They’re knowledgeable, experienced, and know your vehicle inside and out - spotting and solving small problems before they lead to potential repairs.

Call and book your Winter Maintenance Package today!Nitrofill Nitrogen maintains your tire pressure far better than regular air because the oxygen molecules in compressed air are much smaller and leak out 3 to 4 times faster. Air also contains oxygen and moisture that rots your tires and corrodes your wheels and valves.

BY FILLING YOUR TIRES WITH NITROGEN YOU’LL GET BETTER FUEL ECONOMY, LONGER TIRE LIFE, IMPROVED SAFETY...AND SO MUCH MORE.

** THE NITROFILLAUTO CLUB PROVIDES: Tire Repair and Replacement Coverage 24 Hour Emergency Road Service 24 Hour Emergency Battery Service 24 Hour Emergency Delivery Service Travel Benefits Trip Routing Service Theft/Hit and Run Protection Trip Interruption Coverage Lost key and lockout service AND SO MUCH MORE!

As a special bonus, purchase the Winter Maintenance Package and you’ll receive a set of Vivatar® binoculars, free. They’re regularly a $29.95 value.

These binoculars offer powerful 7x50 magnification, rubberized handgrips, fold-down eyecups and ruby-coated optics for glare-free viewing.

Hurry. Quantities are limited.

We’ll change your oil and filter and top up all your fluids. Conduct a visual mechanical inspection, check your brakes and provide you with a written Vehicle Inspection Report. Rotate your tires or install winter wheels on your vehicle (mounted assembly only). Inspect the complete charging system including battery. Environmental disposal fee may apply. Hyundai vehicles only. Synthetic oil extra. *$89.95 for 3.3L and 3.8L engines

Like any other vehicle part, the timing belt eventually wears out. A broken timing belt can cause major engine damage, so be sure to replace it before it breaks. Service includes a Genuine Hyundai timing belt and labour as required by model. Ask dealer for details.

Issue #50- Dec. 17/09Page 62 HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM COMPASS ADVERTISING

When winter weather hits in your area, you can avoid the bulk of the delays and

inconveniences if you do just one thing. Make sure your car is stocked with the

basic winter driving equipment you need. Don’t let mother nature strand you, your

family, or friends alongside the road because you weren’t prepared.

Being ready for the snow and ice that comes with winter driving means more

than having studded tires, it means having the little things to. The last thing you

want to have happen in sub-freezing weather is to find your car disabled. You don’t

need to have actual mechanical problems to have a disabled vehicle in the winter,

you could simply be stuck in the snow, have thick ice covering your windshield or

the rest of your car, have a battery die, be on a section of road or parking lot that

lacks enough traction for your tires to grip, or any number of other situations.

Emergency CashOftentimes, when suffering a

breakdown or an unexpected delay

it means miscellaneous expenses

creep up that you weren’t counting

on.

Jumper CablesWhether it is your vehicle that’s bat-

tery had died or the vehicle blocking

your way, having a safe-to-operate

set of jumper cables can come in

handy.

Small ShovelIf you do get stuck in the snow, hav-

ing a small shovel to dig yourself out

with is a big improvement over having to do it with your hands.

Bag of Sand/Cat LitterWhen your vehicle becomes stuck and loses traction because of ice instead of

snow, a simple bag of cat litter spilled in front of your drive tires can get you back

on the road.

Ice ScraperIt is possible to wait for the defroster to melt

the ice off the entire windshield but an ice

scraper can do the job faster, and if the ice is

particularly thick the defroster might not be

able to handle it at all.

Snow BrushYour visibility will be better and your car will

operate better if you clear the snow and ice from the windows, headlights, hood,

and roof of your car.

Tow Chain / StrapIf your car does go far enough off the road where

you cannot get it back on by itself, you may need

to depend on the help of a kind stranger. Don’t

count on every passerby having a tow chain or

tow strap, have your own.

Many negative things can happen if you are

not properly prepared for tough winter driving

conditions. A flat tire or sliding off the road and

getting stuck in a snow bank can lead you and your family into a situation where

you are stranded, possibly in a remote location. By planning ahead and having the

basic things you may need packed along, you can avoid what could at best be an

inconvenient situation, and at worst be a deadly turn of events.

Having basic winter driving equipment packed in your vehicle when driving in the

snow means that you are prepared for not only what happens when you’re on the

road, but what may happen if you go off the road.

(NC)—In addition to the traditional holiday activities, families may be looking for some fun physical activities that the entire family can participate in. The leisure team at Canadian Tire has put together the following suggestions to help keep the whole family entertained during this holiday season.

Sledding:• Bundle the kids up with mitts and scarves and head to the closest hill to enjoy an afternoon of sledding. Sledding is a perfect outdoor activity for all ages that is both fun and physical.

• Canadian Tire has a variety of winter fun equipment, including snow tubes and snow racers. Younger kids will enjoy snow tubes, while older kids may want to try the snow scooter, great for the big neighbourhood hills

Ice Skating:• Take your entire family to your favourite local skating rink, for an afternoon of ice skating.

• Ensure little ones have proper safety gear, such as a helmet, elbow and knee pads.

• Bring a thermos of hot chocolate and some holiday baking as a treat during breaks off the ice.

Snow Shoeing:• Snow shoeing is a fun and affordable activity that can be done virtually anywhere outdoors - at a neighbourhood park trail or at the cottage.

• There are different types of snow shoes available for kids and adults, if you are a beginner, look for a recreational shoe that is meant for gentle and moderate walks.

• Keep your snow shoes in the trunk of your car so that you and your family are ready at a moment’s notice.

EQUIPMENT NEEDEDGas-powered or hand-cranked augers.

A strainer, or ice skimmer to keep hole clear of ice.

A fishing pole, 10-pound-test line.

Sinkers and small jigs

Bait - shrimp, corn, Salmon eggs, popcorn, power bait, worms, grub, larvae, or just about anything you think a fish will like.

WHAT TO WEARClothing should be worn in layers for maxium heat retention. The layer of clothing next to your skin needs to be made out of

a material that will wic moisture away from your body. The outside layer of clothing needs to be wind and water proof. Keep

your hands dry and take extra pairs of gloves. Your poor feet are what are in contact with the ice all day. Winter boots and

an extra pair of wool socks are the ticket to keeping them warm.
