Many Causes Of 'Bud Blast’ By Sue Morris and LaVonne Swart Bud blast is when buds wither and fall from an otherwise healthy plant. There are any number of causes for this to happen. Buds are the most sensitive part of an orchid and are easily affected by un-suitable conditions in the growing environment. Under or over watering is a common cause. If a plant becomes too dry, it may withdraw moisture from buds as a survival mechanism. Overwatering can damage the orchid's root system with the end result of being a lack of water to the plant. When the plant is unable to absorb sufficient quantities of water, it will withdraw water from the buds, bringing about their demise. Watering with cold water can shock a plant, causing bud drop. Precautions can be taken to prevent bud blast. If a budding orchid receives drafts from a window, a/c or heating vent or even a rush of air from a hot oven, it may drop buds. Temperature fluctuations that occur when taking a plant in from the car or outside during hot or cold weather, bringing plants back into a heated house after a summer outdoors, or temperature extremes caused by running heating or air conditioning for only part of a day can affect the buds. Orchid buds can be affected by fumes from paint, natural gas leaks or other chemicals. Ethylene gas given off by ripening fruit, engine exhaust, cigarette smoke, open fires, etc. can also cause bud blast. Too much fertilizer isn't good either. Once you find a position your orchid likes, you know you have found the spot where it receives the correct amount of light. Aphids, red mites and thrips can cause bud blast. These can be controlled with various proprietary products so check with your local garden centre. Occasionally, even under perfect cultural conditions, an orchid will continually abort buds. There may be a genetic mutation responsible for its inability to produce viable blooms and in that case the plant should be discarded. Just make sure your orchids never sit in water so the roots rot and don't expose them to drafts - that will take care of 90 percent of any problems you might have. Some of this information was taken from the July 2003 issue of Orchids — The Bulletin of the American Orchid Society;

VALE LES GADENNE

We sadly lost our good friend Les Gadenne on the 20th November

2016 to the insidious motor neuron disease. Les has been a stal-

wart of the Wanneroo/Joondalup Orchid Society since he and Val

joined after moving to Wanneroo from Mandurah in the early

2000’s. Les was a long time member of the Committee, and was

always there in our times of need. When there was a sudden va-

cancy for the position of president, Les stepped into the breach

even though he had some personal reservations. Les will always be

remembered for his joyful way of seeing the world. He was such a

funny man. A jovial scallywag, an irreverent soul, a charmer.

He told me once that the older

he became, the more he could get away with.

We are poorer without him.

Our thoughts are with Val in this sad time

Is it wise to get rid of all algae on your plants? It has been suggested that adding chlorine to the water may just do the trick but the addition of chlorine to the wa-ter will add to that already inserted by the water authority so you might just injure your plants with excess chlorine. The problem may stem from too wet an environment for the plants, not rampant algae. Let the surface dry a bit more and this might reduce your algae problem if you see it as a problem. Some algae helps to fix nitrogen in the roots of orchids thus assisting their growth. In the trees where most of the orchids live, algae and fungi are both present and necessary for healthy plant growth. Their spores are in the air as well as in the water.
