The Committee planned and worked closely with the debutantes to insure that this year’s Ball would be an “Unforgettable Moment.”

Since 1990, by sponsoring the Annual Cotillion Scholarship Program, the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has provided college-bound young ladies the opportunity to raise funds for their post-secondary educations, attend cultural and civic events, and participate in community service events that make it possible for them to give something back to the Durham community in which they live. As they move forward into the next chapters of their lives, we challenge the debutantes to cherish the memories, friendships and life lessons they have learned during the eight months they participated in the Cotillion Program.

We also applaud and thank the debutantes’ parents for their patience, guidance and enduring spirit in this journey with their daughters and with the Committee members. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter History

In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became America’s first Greek-letter organization established by and for African-American women. Her roots date back to Howard University in Washington D.C. where Ethel Hedgemen Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri conceived the idea for the organization. She viewed the Sorority as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates.

Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards; promotes unity and friendship among college women; alleviates problems concerning girls and women; maintains a progressive interest in college life; and serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 260,000 women in 900 chapters.

In 2008, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrated its Centennial with a myriad of events and activities during the national conference in Washington, D.C.

Alpha Zeta Omega was the first Greek-letter sorority in the city of Durham as well as the third chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha to be established in the State of North Carolina. The chapter was chartered on April 14, 1928 by eight Sorors who wanted to establish a chapter in Durham, N.C. Those Sorors were: Majorie Shepard, Frances Eggleston, Bernice W. Jones, Jean Holtzclaw, Byrd Jackson, Beatrice Qualls Burnette, Alda Fortune and Gladys Powell.

Alpha Zeta Omega has over eighty years of history that is full of rich tradition and a testimony to its national goal of “Service to All Mankind”. The chapter embraces Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national great mission: Global Leadership through Timeless Service as outlined by our International President, Carolyn House Stewart. Signature program initiatives for the mission include: Emerging Young Leaders, Asthma Prevention and Management, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability, Global Poverty, Economic Security, Social Justice and Human Rights, and Internal Leadership Training for External Service.

In 1995, the members of Alpha Zeta Omega established the Ivy Community Center, Inc. as a non-profit tax exempt corporation. The purpose of the corporation is to promote the well being and betterment of people in our community. Additionally, the corporation sought to acquire a facility for the members of the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter to meet, plan and conduct community outreach services.

The Chapter continues its recognition of academic excellence by awarding scholarships to outstanding college bound students. Supporting the charitable efforts such as the United Negro Council of Women, John Avery Boys & Girls Club, and United Negro College Fund continues to be a focus of the chapter.

The tradition of “Service to All Mankind” continues as Alpha Zeta Omega implements programs that serve the community by providing educational opportunities, supporting the arts and highlighting health issues.

Debutante Cotillion Scholarship Program

Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated sponsors the Debutante Cotillion Scholarship Program to provide activities and opportunities which will assist in empowering young ladies to be successful, especially during their transition from high school to college. The objectives of the Program are for the debutantes to:

1. Raise scholarship money for their college education.

2. Participate in workshops geared towards skill enhancement, confidence building and knowledge acquisition.

3. Participate in service projects which provide them with an opportunity to use their time, talents and skills to help others within their community and to see the impacts that their contributions have on others and on themselves.

4. Attend various types of cultural events with the objective of exposing them to various art forms.

5. Realize hard work can yield wonderful benefits.

6. Form lasting friendships with other young ladies.

7. Be presented to society at an elegant and memorable Debutante Cotillion Ball.

The Debutante Cotillion Scholarship Program is a self-sustaining program. None of the monies raised for the Scholarship Program are retained by Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., except for expenses of the Program. All net proceeds (after expenses) are returned to the Debutante in the form of a scholarship as a percentage of the amount raised. That percentage is determined by the amount each participant raises.

It is the goal and desire of Alpha Zeta Omega to keep expenses to a minimum while maintaining its standards of excellence and high quality as we present the Debutantes to the community-at-large and provide the cultural, social, educational and civic experience each Debutante deserves.

To Our Queen, Our Sister Catherine Grace-Evelyn Singletary,

We are so proud of you and your accomplishments in your life thus far. We know that your journey through college will be wonderful and that you will be very successful in the future.

(Christina)

Catherine I’ve seen you grow into a mature, strong, and smart young lady, who makes me both proud and honored to call you my sister. You are not only my sister, but my best friend who I can truly count on. You have always been by my side through everything and definitely always show so much patience.

I appreciate your time, support, comfort and love. Catherine may you always stay the humble young lady you have always been and I know you will continue to grow into womanhood just as graceful.

(Charles)

Catherine I want to say thank you for always being able to talk to me and give me great advice. Whenever I need your help with anything you are always there. I believe that our natural bond will always be and that we will always be there for one another.

To My Family, Friends, and Supporters,

I want to thank my Lord and Savior for blessing me with all of you.

I want to thank you for all of your continuous encouragement and the wonderful experience of the Alpha Kappa Alpha 2011 Cotillion.

To you, Mommy, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for always being there throughout my life making each one of us three always feel so special. You have always shared both in words and actions what our gifts from the Lord are and always encouraged and supported them with your actions and tireless drive that has served as the best example any daughter could ever have.

To you, Daddy, you are a man of true honor. With your busy schedule you still make time for all of us and support us in every way imaginable. Your wisdom and kind heart is my strength. I thank the Lord everyday for the wonderful gift of you and Mommy.

To my sister and best friend Christina, thank you for just being you. You are a shoulder to lean on and a force of energy for every fundraiser, especially the Gospel Concert.

To my brother, Charles, I want to thank you for your encouragement and help whether it was using your physical strength to set up tables, carrying items and being there with the family for all the great fundraisers and great times. I thank you most of all for just being you.

I would also like to thank you and Aunt Adelia for my beautiful brochure. Aunt Adelia for formatting and starting the graphics with my first photo and to you Charles with your computer savy for adding additional graphics and producing the final product.

I want to give a special thank you to my Grandma and Granddaddy for your tireless efforts of fundraising for me. Whether it was rolling up your sleeves and cooking, taking orders and delivering for my fish fry fundraiser or just spreading the word and giving great ideas. The most cherish moments are in full Singletary tradition of just being together enjoying one another, while we work toward a desired goal.

To my Aunt Esther, I can only thank you again for the gift of love of my Beautiful Gown for the Cotillion. My gown contains the special gift that God gave you as a seamstress.

To my Holy Cross Church Family, I would like to thank you for your tireless support of my fundraisers and generous contributions. Thank you for playing such a large part in the success of my fundraisers.

To my Mentors, I can’t thank each and every one of you enough for your support and dedication. A special thanks to Mrs. Patterson, Ms. Francine, Mrs. Bernandine, Ms. Carol, Mrs. Lula Monds, Rosa Small, Maria Small, Ms. Jackie, Mrs. Jamison, Mrs. Fisher, Mrs. Hudson, and Mr. Baker for your time, continuous efforts, donations of items for fundraisers ,and encouragements.

And last but certainly not least, I would like to thank my cousins, Wilson’s in Harmony (Laverne Clancy, Vickie Roach and Mira Burris) for being the featured performers for my Gospel Concert Fundraiser with cousin Ciera Wilson as a added blessing. The blessing of your anointed voices and musical genius made the Gospel Concert a true blessing for everyone who attended. Thank you for blessing me especially in Glorifying the Lord in song. I shall cherish always.

I hope you always know I Love you and I feel so Blessed to have all of you in my life. Love, Catherine Grace-Evelyn Singletary
