1.Introducing the topic

• The topic must be controversial and expressed as a statement.

• The students will be divided into two groups in order to argue about the positive and negative sides of the

topic.

2. Arguments and counter-arguments

• Students will be given time so as to come up with arguments for and against.(Important: students' personal opinions are irrelevant. They must argue for their side even if they disagree)

• Students must divide responsibilities (one member of the team will give the introduction, another one the first argument, etc...)

3. During the debate

• The teacher will conduct the debate and remind the students to be polite and respectful; they will take turns to speak.

• All the team members must speak.

4. Drawing conclusions

• Teacher and students can recap the main ideas including the arguments and rebuttals.

• Students can give their own points of view now and discuss if they learnt anything or changed their opinions because of the debate.
