CELL PHONE COVERAGE

There is basically no cell phone coverage in Death Valley.

Although our Route Producer will make sure we have all the neces-sary means of communication, we

just want to make you all

aware. It is strongly recommended bringing call-ing cards with

you should you want to make any long-distance phone calls.

No doubt about it, the Furnace Creek Ranch will make you feel welcome during your weekend stay. They have been taking care of JDRF riders for many years now, and look forward to having us back. Just a few Housekeeping Tips: • Pets are not allowed on the grounds of the Furnace Creek Ranch • Blow dryers, alarm clocks, and coffee makers are in each room • To turn on your hotel phone, you must provide a credit card to the

front desk • Cell phone service is very limited in Death Valley. You are

encouraged to bring a calling card or purchase a pre-paid card with minutes for long distance calls.

Welcoming guests since 1933, the Furnace Creek Ranch offers

accommodations in a casual, family-like setting, the perfect complement to the classic elegance of Furnace Creek Inn.

Hear the clatter of horse-drawn wagons as they roll through the Ranch and bring you back to the Old West. Stop off at the Corkscrew Saloon

for a cool drink and a game of pool. Ride a horse, take a hike or challenge your kids to a game of horseshoes. Visit the General Store

for a quick snack and some great gifts. Check out the antique stagecoaches, mining tools and steam locomotive at the

Borax Museum. As you wander around the western-themed grounds, you'll feel like

you've been transported back to the 1800's when this site was estab-lished as a working ranch. Yet, you'll enjoy the amenities of modern civilization, like quiet, recently refurbished rooms, a Golf Pro Shop, a spring-fed swimming pool, tennis courts, a children's playground and

the National Park Service Visitor's Center - which is just a stone's throw away.

While this list may not be totally comprehensive it might help to remind you of some of the things to consider.

Discuss any significant travel with your health care team including adjustment for travel through several time zones. Carry extra prescriptions and their contact information with you.

In addition, you may want to ask for a letter from them that outlines your medical condition/s, the insulin (and frequency of dosage) you take, devices used, the importance of carrying medication/s with you and that your insulin pump (if used) must not be removed.

When flying across multiple time zones remember that your total insulin dosage is designed to work for about 24 hours, so if you change three or more time zones when flying across the country or overseas, you might need to adjust your injection schedule. In general, when you fly east you lost time so you may need less insulin. When you fly west you gain time, so you might need more insulin. Confirm any adjustment with your health care team in advance of your travel.

Pack twice the amount of supplies you think you need, split between 2 bags in your carry-on luggage.

Do not check these supplies with your luggage in case it is lost. Your supplies can be taken through security check points, but they must have a prescription label on them. Also, the cargo hold is not heated or insulat-ed well, so medicine and supplies can be damaged.
