• This was a fictional book about a Peruvian army corporal and his assistant who have been stationed at a remote mountain mining community.

• The story involves ancient folklore, murder, natural disaster and love.

• I tried to imagine today’s Peru compared to the one described in the book but I ended up having to just read it as entertainment.

• I was surprised with the sexual explicitness of the writer. For me it didn’t make the book more entertaining.

• I liked character, the cantina owner Dona Adriana, with her mysteries and magic.
