Dear Readers and Friends, Welcome to the third annual newsletter for the postgraduate research programme. As ever we include in this edition up-to-date information about alumni, which we have received from Rev Dr John Arthur Orr, Dr Gwen Adams, Dr Tamra Fromm, Sr Dr Mary Treacy, Sr Dr Thomas More, OP and Dr Stephen Yates. We have also received contributions to the newsletter from our current students Dan Schneider and Fr Marcelo Navarro. Dan and Fr. Marcelo share their experiences of studying at Maryvale in a warm, honest and encouraging way. The other contributions include: an update of their most recent professional and academic achievements, conference attendance and book publications. Dr Yates reflects on research post-doctorate and building an ongoing research profile by attending conferences, preparing new publications and giving conference presentations. On this special occasion we all express our congratulations to those who passed their vivas in the academic year of 2018 - 2019: Tamra Fromm, Fr. Maurice Emelu, Ann Gleeson, Robert McNamara and Fr. Justino Cornejo. Some of you may remember the sad news that Liverpool Hope University was cutting back on partnership agreements as current arrangements were coming up for review in 2018. I am happy to inform you that the extension agreement has been signed on 8th Mar 2019 for a one-year partnership with LHU and is in effect until 31st Dec 2019. The 5 years’ contract extension is currently in process of negotiation between Maryvale institute and Liverpool Hope University. The new contract is expected to be signed in December 2019. Due to an interrupted validation agreement, only 2 students were admitted in 2018-19, however after a successful extension of the contract in March 2019, 9 new candidates have been admitted to the programme (7 new students for – Oct 2019 cohort; 2 – Feb 2020). This has reinforced the future of the programme. A second volume of the Maryvale Book (Aspects of Doctoral Research) has been published and the third vol- ume is on its way. A large group of our current and former students and staff have attended the canonisation of Cardinal J.H. Newman in Rome (see photo of Fr Marcelo Navarro below). Please do keep in touch with us here at Maryvale and be assured of our prayers for each one of you. Dr Birute Briliute
