FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK...........
Dear Parents, Caregivers & Community members
Kia ora kotou on a beautiful, sunny late Autumn day. It’s hard to believe the 1st of June is nearly upon us. If you know of any new families moving to the Woodlands area on Gypsy Day, please do encourage them to get in touch with us to come and have a look around.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the survey we sent out about the school swimming pool. We received many excellent ideas and comments. One of the main points made was that the community should be involved in the running of the pool. The Board of Trustees is now going to set up a committee consisting of some trustees, staff, PTA and community representatives. If you would like to be part of this group, please let Nicky in the office know. We would appreciate your input into developing a plan for the pool going forward and making things happen.
Congratulations to last week’s winner of the Principal’s Award for
Caring, Grace Hourston. Grace has such a happy, positive
attitude. She gives everything 100%. Grace has a lot of friends
because she is so kind, caring and considerate.
There are a lot of bugs around just now. Please remember that children should stay at home if they are not very well. Up until now we have been providing tissues for classrooms and it is phenomenal just how quickly we go through these!! It would be helpful if you could provide your child with a named small box of tissues to keep in their desk or tote tray for their own use.
This week is Bully Free NZ week. Go to the website www.bullyingfree.nz. It has a helpful
section for parents & whanau. There is some excellent information to help everyone
understand what bullying is and what can be done about it. I encourage you to have a
look. Bullying is something we take seriously at school and later this year we will teach the
Police Education anti-bullying programme Kia Kaha.
Have a great week and may your June 1st dairy farm activities go smoothly.
Regards
Fiona

Parents, please let the school know when your child is absent. When a child is not at school, and we don’t know why, Nicky has to spend quite a bit of time ringing parents. This is a “must do” for the safety of your children. If ringing the school is not always the easiest option, you can email [email protected] or text us on 027 758 1503.

Wednesday 31st May 7pm Woodlands School All Welcome – a special warm welcome extended to all the new Woodlands families ☺
Room Kea (5 year olds) This Term we are doing science experiments. We are learning about chemical and
physical changes.
One of the experiments we did was to see the chemical change that occurs when
you mix baking soda with vinegar. This produces bubbling which is the carbon
dioxide gas being released.

KAPA HAKA Our students have formed a Kapa Haka group and intend to enter Polyfest this year. They wonder if anyone in the community is able to help with costume making/weaving.
Please contact Tina Tuliau or Amy Kerlsake if you can help.
Room Whio (10 - 13 year olds)
Room Whio has enjoyed getting outside during learning time, making the most of the cool autumn mornings before winter sets in. We decided to produce some artwork that was reflective of autumn. We talked about the types of colours that you generally see in autumn (warm colours) such as
orange, reds, yellows and browns of all shades and tones. We have produced some Aboriginal Autumn Leaf Art, combining autumn colours with the dot technique used by the Aborigines in Australia. We then mounted our leaves onto cooler colours to show the difference between the changing seasons. As we found out, using the techniques of Aboriginal artists takes a lot of time and patience but our persistence certainly paid off. Check out our AMAZING works of art!
This term Room Kakapo has been taking part in a variety of exciting chemistry experiments. We have learnt
about chemical changes and physical changes as well as lots of new science vocabulary when observing materials
as they react with each other.
“We placed an egg into
vinegar for 3 days. When we removed it we could rub off the shell and the egg felt squishy. Our egg could
bounce a metre high before splitting!” By Nell Johnston
“My favourite experiment so far has been the lava lamps because I loved it when the bubbles of oil floated up to the surface of the water. The oil is less dense than the water so it floats on top.” By Tessa Burgess
“In the fizzing and foaming
experiment the cup overflowed
because the vinegar and the
baking soda reacted and
produced carbon dioxide gas.”
By Taine Byrne
“We made raisins dance in
lemonade. The carbon dioxide
bubbles latched onto the surface
of the raisins making them float
to the top of the glass. When the
bubbles popped, the raisins sunk”
By Michael Crean
Room Kakapo (8-10 year olds)
Room Pukeko (6-7 year olds)
This term our inquiry focus is
Science: Chemistry. We began it with a BOOM and
BANG! Using a combined mixture of paint and citric acid, we made paint bombs. We observed and
described the process of what happened inside the container until it finally exploded high into the sky.
Check out our super exploding
paint bomb art below!
At the end of last term Room Tui created some Easter art. We created Easter art so the Easter Bunny would come and visit us. And he did!!
