Week Commencing 1st April 2019 Dear Parents and Guardians This week’s Literacy Challenge is: Last week we received the news that we had been hoping for for some time. All 240 places for Year 7 in September 2019 have been allocated which means we are now full or ‘over subscribed’. We were also told that we have 10 children on our waiting list. We have sent out Appeal forms to several parents already. This show of support from so many parents (over 200 of the 240 places were First Choices) is great news for the school. The work all the staff do deserves this type of recognition. A few parents have asked me what this means for the future given the possibility of housing developments in and around the Halewood area. While it is almost impossible to predict I would say, with some certainty, that those who live closer to school and put Halewood as first choice will be luckier than those who either live further away or those who live close but don’t put us as first choice. For almost all parents, the school they are allocated is based on choice and distance from the school. The 240th child on the Year 7 list for September lives 1.6 miles away from Halewood Academy. In 2 or 3 years time, with many more houses in Halewood, it is inevitable that this will be closer to school. We await the appeals for places in June and only then will we know the final figure for our Year 7 in September but I want to thank all of those parents who have chosen Halewood Academy as the school for their child. I have mentioned recognition for the work that staff do so it seems an appropriate time to write about the Knowsley Education Awards. Anyone can nominate staff or students from a school in the borough. The list of categories can be found at http://knowsleyeducationawards.com/ categories-criteria/ and includes Teacher of the Year, Team of the Year, Support Champion of the Year, Artist of the Year, Scientist of the Year and Sports Person of the Year. Halewood Academy won 2 awards last year so it would be great to see some of our staff and students up for an award again. Please nominate anyone you think deserves it! There are so many great people to choose from! We break up for the Spring Break on Friday at 2.45pm. School reopens on Tuesday 23rd April at 8.45am. I hope you all have a relaxing time! Best wishes—Mr G Evans, Executive Principal This week’s Numeracy Challenge is: Mr Bailey says his age is 50 years, 50 months, 50 weeks and 50 days. What age will he be on his next birthday? Week Commencing 1st April 2019 Dear Parents and Guardians

This week’s Literacy Challenge is:

Last week we received the news that we had been hoping for for some time. All 240 places for Year 7 in September 2019

have been allocated which means we are now full or ‘over subscribed’. We were also told that we have 10 children on our

waiting list. We have sent out Appeal forms to several parents already. This show of support from so many parents (over

200 of the 240 places were First Choices) is great news for the school. The work all the staff do deserves this type of

recognition. A few parents have asked me what this means for the future given the possibility of housing developments in

and around the Halewood area. While it is almost impossible to predict I would say, with some certainty, that those who live

closer to school and put Halewood as first choice will be luckier than those who either live further away or those who live

close but don’t put us as first choice. For almost all parents, the school they are allocated is based on choice and distance

from the school. The 240th child on the Year 7 list for September lives 1.6 miles away from Halewood Academy. In 2 or 3

years time, with many more houses in Halewood, it is inevitable that this will be closer to school. We await the appeals for

places in June and only then will we know the final figure for our Year 7 in September but I want to thank all of those parents

who have chosen Halewood Academy as the school for their child.

I have mentioned recognition for the work that staff do so it seems an appropriate time to write about the Knowsley

Education Awards. Anyone can nominate

staff or students from a school in the

borough. The list of categories can be found

at http://knowsleyeducationawards.com/

categories-criteria/ and includes Teacher of

the Year, Team of the Year, Support

Champion of the Year, Artist of the Year,

Scientist of the Year and Sports Person of

the Year. Halewood Academy won 2

awards last year so it would be great to see some of our staff and students up for an award again. Please nominate anyone

you think deserves it! There are so many great people to choose from!

We break up for the Spring Break on Friday at 2.45pm. School reopens on Tuesday 23rd April at 8.45am. I hope you all

have a relaxing time!

Best wishes—Mr G Evans, Executive Principal

Last week’s Numeracy Challenge Answer:

Peter works out the cost of the gas he used last year.

At the start of the year, the gas meter reading was 12967 units. At the end of

the year, the gas meter reading was 14059 units.

Each unit of gas he used cost 44p. Work out the total cost of his gas for the

year.

Super Challenge:

Work out the mean cost per month of the gas he used last year.

Solution: Step 1: Work out the total units used

14059 – 12967 = 1092 units Step 2: Multiply the number of units used by the cost per unit

1092 x 44p = 48048p

Step 3: Convert the price into pounds 48048 ÷ 100 = £480.48

Super Challenge: 480.48 ÷ 12 = £40.04

Important message to Parents & Students:

In the academy, we have several students with nut

allergies and one student in particular with a severe

allergy. Please do not send in any nut products with

your child and discuss with your child the importance

of them not buying any snacks containing nuts on

the way into school. Thank you in advance for your

support with this.

Half Term days out

As the first rays of sunshine breakthrough the dark winter clouds, explore Liverpool One’s

Nature Trail for an outdoor adventure.

The Nature Trail is a signposted walk that encourages young explorers to be active and learn

more about Liverpool One’s Chavasse Park.

Discover all the different insects, plants and trees found across the five acre park. The trail

takes roughly 30 minutes to complete but botanists are encouraged to go at their own pace.

It is a fantastic activity to do with kids if you have time to pass.

To get started, simply visit the Liverpool One information centre on Wall Street and pick up a

Nature Trail booklet. While exploring the park, don’t forget to make a note of what you see.

Once you’ve completed the trail, return to the Information Centre and receive a Special Na-
