Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome back to Term 3 of the academic year. A perusal of
the term calendar that accompanies this Newsletter will give
you an insight into just how busy and exciting this term will be.
As always all excursions, carnivals and interschool
involvement and activities designed to develop our children
physically are carefully thought through to ensure that we are
giving all children the opportunity to grow and develop,
physically, mentally and socially.

on Thursday 29 August. Please ensure that the Fotoworks envelope is returned on School Photo Day for the
photographer to collect. For more information from Fotoworks please see the attached flyer at the end of
this newsletter. The Front Office has limited spare envelopes and sibling envelopes.
Attendance When Unwell We would like to remind parents that when their children are sick, to keep them home
from school. Please encourage your children to wash their hands regularly to help stop
the spread of germs and to use tissues when required.
During the winter months, colds and flu are an unfortunate part of life. Please help us by
keeping sick children home from school. We have been informed of two cases of
Influenza B in the upper primary. If you are concerned about your child’s health, it is best
to seek medical advice from your GP.
Talk 4 Writing All Teaching and Non-Teaching staff members attended day 1 training session in our Whole School Talk 4
Writing program. We had an excellent presenter and our staff members are very excited to select a fiction
or non-fiction text and run the students through the teaching components this term. Our day 1 training
included the complete teaching component. The teachers and assistants will reflect on the processes and
assist each other during our collaborative sessions and phase meetings to enable them to report back on
their progress during our second day training on 14 October. We endeavour a full implementation in this
program as our whole school writing program in 2020.
Timetable Changes for 2020 A change to our timetable for 2020 has been agreed upon by our
staff members and endorsed by our School Board on 29 July 2019.
The time structure will take effect in 2020 and is shown on the
right.
Lunch times will be delayed with 30 minutes compared to current
structure and therefore it will be very important to pack extra
lunch and crunch & sip for students.
Canberra Camp for Year 5/6 As per new Education Department Guidelines, all camp opportunities as from
2018 at Government Schools have to be approved by the Regional Director, and
have to include an Educational Purpose for proposed camp.
Poseidon Primary School staff would like to propose to parents a Year 5/6 camp,
every two years, to Canberra as from 2021.
Information sessions to our current Year 3/4 parents will be held on Thursday
morning, 8 August at 8:00am in the Library. An early evening session on
Wednesday 14 August at 5.30 pm in the Library and we would like to invite our
current Pre Primary to Year 4 parents to this evening information session as well to discuss the particulars
of the proposal. Both sessions present the same information.
The current proposal includes a 5 day, 4 night Canberra trip and inclusive of a day snow experience, snow
play and tobogganing on Perisher. Please do not hesitate to contact the Principal if you need any further
information regarding this proposed camp.

Instrumental Music School Services We have been in contact with the Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) to assist with some lessons in
2020. As our main secondary schools offer music as a specialist program we would like to initiate the IMSS
program in 2020 at Poseidon Primary.
An aptitude test will be conducted with some of our students later this term and the school will liaise with
the IMSS Principal as to which instruments can be offered to our students at Poseidon. Selected students
will be offered a position in this music program. This program is free of charge to students selected at our
school, the only payment from parents will be the lease of an instrument if students are selected for any
brass or wind instruments.
Students selected for the guitar program, will have to provide their own classical guitar for lessons. Students
will receive lessons from a qualified music teacher and grades and comments will be entered onto Semester
Reports for these selected students.
Information about the IMSS program is available on the Department of Education website at
http://det.wa.edu.au/imss/detcms/navigation/for-parents/ and once details have been confirmed with the
IMSS Principal, detailed information will be sent to our parent community about this fantastic opportunity.
BYOD – 2020 In order to maximise student access to technology for learning, a number of schools have implemented
“Bring your own device” (BYOD) program. These programs involve students bringing their own iPAD to
school. They use this device under teacher direction for academic purposes.
We are considering implementing a BYOD program at Poseidon Primary School. With your support, we
would like to implement this program for 2020, Year 2 – Year 4 students to trial. At the moment we have
distributed a survey with a return slip to our 2020 Year 2 – Year 4 students. We would like to implement this
program next year to these year groups, for optimum use to you as parents if you are able to assist the school
and would like to purchase or a lease this device for your child.
Our school will be entering into a partnership with Winthrop Australia. Winthrop will provide different
payment options to accommodate each parent, including a Sky Card and a Leasing option.
Painting of Utility Boxes We have managed to secure Mr Peter Ryan, a fantastic Perth Artist, to assist in the painting of our green
utility boxes at the front of the school. Peter will be at school on Thursday 15 August and will be assisted
by Mrs Clark and a small group of very gifted artists.
RSPCA Cupcake Day Poseidon Primary will be keeping up the tradition of running a RSPCA Cupcake
Day on Thursday, 15 August. Due to the generous cupcake donations and
helpers in previous years, Poseidon Primary has raised much needed funds
for RSPCA. Let’s keep this tradition going!
Please donate cupcakes to Mrs Mugg in the undercover area before school on August 15. Slices, fruit kebabs
and other treats are also welcome. It all goes to help our furry friends.
We will also need parent helpers if you can spare some time on the day. Helpers are needed from 8:45 up
to end of recess to help set up, sell items at recess and pack up. Any help is greatly appreciated. Please
contact Mrs Mugg if you would like to help out, or send an email to [email protected] and
the office will pass along the email to Mrs Mugg.
Book Week Our enthusiastic and energetic staff have organised Book Week for Week 5.
This involves the usual display of books provided by Ashton Scholastic where
families will have the opportunity to purchase books for their children before
and after school between Monday August 19 and Friday August 23.
Volunteers to help manage the book sales would be greatly appreciated,
please contact Mrs Mugg if you are able to assist on
[email protected].,au or leave message with the front office
staff on 9307 2356.
The Book Week assembly is on Friday, 23 August. Students are encouraged to dress up for the assembly in
this year’s theme “Reading is my SECRET POWER” or their favourite book character. Two prizes are awarded
to each class for the best dressed.
ROC (Reading On Cushions) - Volunteers Needed ROC is our very successful before school reading program that supports children from years 2 to 4 in learning
to read. We require some parent volunteers to help run this important program. If you think you are able
to help in any way, please give your name and contact details to the Front Office on 9307 2356 or
ROC involves listening to children read, talking about the book and asking questions. We look forward to
creating lifelong readers with you.
ROC runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8:15am – 9am (at the latest), in Athena wet area. We can be flexible
on times if you need to leave before 9am or we can look at alternative days if you can’t do the Tuesday or
Wednesday, just leave message with the Front Office and one of our staff will get back to you.
External Instrument/Music Lessons We have been in contact with Primary Music Institute (PMI) today, as we have had numerous issues with
their service to our students and parents. We know that parents are not paying for any lessons for their
child/ren in Term 3. We have informed PMI that we are cancelling their involvement of lessons at Poseidon
as of Term 4, 2019.
We have researched other companies and have had great testimonials from other schools using Keyed Up
Music. A flyer for Keyed Up Music is shown below, the company delivers music lessons during school hours
and after school hours. Music Teachers are qualified and/or experienced musical educators and have
Working With Children Check (WWCC)
Keyed Up Music will be running Drum, Guitar, Voice and Keyboard lessons at Poseidon Primary School during
Term 4, 2019 and beyond if we are satisfied with their service.
This company is also taking expressions of interest for Violin, Woodwind and Brass instruments.
Parents will receive a report every semester. We hope to get students who have cancelled during this year
and previous years back on board.
Prices are per lesson for interested students from PP – Yr 6 and start at $17.55 for a Keyboard group lesson
of 4 students, $18.10 for a Guitar group lesson of 3 students and $22.55 for a Voice/Drum shared lesson.
Individual lessons are $33.00
To enrol for Term 4 please check their website www.keyedupmusic.com.au/enrolment-form or for more
information please contact Therese 1300 366 243
As soon as we have enrolments organised we will have a meeting with the Director of Keyed Up Music to set
up timetable for lessons in Term 4.
Blueprint for Parents to Build Self Esteem Positive Tracking Model making genuine positive comments.
Model being positive about yourself.
Give your child positive feedback.
Improve your own self esteem.
Positive Expectations Give them jobs, and expect positive outcomes.
Comment on the part of the job that was done well even if the child has
failed.
Persevere At first your child will not believe what you are saying about them –
persevere.
Separate What They
Do From What They Are
Don’t allow your child to make general comments about their
achievements/failures.
e.g. They may say they are terrible at sport, when what they should be
saying is they are terrible at running.
Arrange Opportunities
for Success
Find out about things your child is good at and put them in a situation
where they have an opportunity to enjoy the success and show you that
they can succeed.
Turn Mistakes Into
Positive Experiences
If your child is having a negative experience, try and turn it into a positive
one.
Encourage Risk Taking
It doesn’t matter if a risk turns into a failure...let them have a go, and be
there for them, waiting to turn a negative experience into a positive one.
