Garden Lovers Invitation It’s Time To SHINE Whistling Gardens l Botanical Gardens & Garden Centre 2020 REVEAL! Dear Garden Friends, 2020 REVEAL! It’s Time To ….SHINE We Need Our Gardens Now More Than Ever…. How are you? We’ve been thinking about you, hoping you are all keeping well and in good spirits. When the going gets tough, us gardening types really know how to dig deep to “be at our best” to remain resilient, respectful and kind. As we cautiously reopen, complying with provincial COVID-19 business guidelines, Everyone’s Safety is our Top Priority! Upon your visit, our friendly, prescreening trained team will welcome you, and ensure that you take a moment to read our Garden Etiquette signs. As a team, together, our behavior will keep us all safe and well. So let’s care for each other with physical distancing, using hand sanitizer stations located in every washroom and at our Welcome Centre while adhering to all provincial guidelines. We plant with love and care, as we reopen to be your safe haven of respite and rejuvenation. Come SHINE with us! Our Botanical Gardens spring blooms await our 1 st seasonal guests on June 3 rd welcome back! The Garden Centre and Garden Gift Shop offer a fully stocked selection of ornamental plant material for your home sanctuary, while garden gifts feature a selection of outdoor accessories, original artworks from local nature artisans, even PPE washable face masks and more! We are proud to have purchased all of our PPE from local and Canadian companies, as we support many area businesses. Our Musical Fountain Show starts on June 6 th offering a relaxing water therapy display in sync to new world music composed by owner, Darren Heimbecker a.k.a. artistic brand Aria . Our nature conservation efforts are well documented in this year’s 2020 Founder's Message NEW highlights include, our Peony Collection expansion, which now surpasses 1,300 varieties! Over 100 new varieties were added into the collection from Our Peony Donors David Maltby, the Cook family and Whistling Gardens. This required the making of new beds and shifting existing plants from one garden to another. This season’s Best Bloom Time… second week of June onward watch for our social media updates! 2020 introduces significant changes with the addition of new beds, pathways and plants as work continues throughout 2020. Guests have been traveling to Canada to specifically see our peony collection, often sharing their amazement of the diversity of the plants amongst our other collections. We are honoured to be recognized in the league, as the home of many significant plant collections. The growth of plants continues to amaze visitors and even myself. Shade was once a limited commodity at the gardens and now "plant shuffling" of sun loving plants is becoming an annual necessity. Visitors retuning from their first 2012 visit, just can't believe the changes and the maturity of the gardens. Many specimens thrive, as both Red Oak (Quercus rubra), and Tulip Tree (Liriodendorn tulipifera) have grown to more than over 40 feet in just ten years from 3 to 5 foot saplings.

Millstream Garden Award - North American Rock Garden Society

A proud moment for Whistling Gardens, founder/creator Darren Heimbecker when the following email arrived. “I am pleased and honored to inform you that you have been awarded the Millstream Award from the North American Rock Garden Society. This award, inspired by Linc and Timmy Foster’s garden in Connecticut, is given to an extraordinary garden that exemplifies the art and craft of rock gardening: yours does this and more! A suite of images of your garden were shown at the Study Weekend yesterday in Frazer, Pennsylvania, and the crowd audibly swooned! Congratulations, and thank you for all you have done for the North American Rock Garden society and our cherished art,” Sincerely, Panayoti Kelaidis, Senior Curator and Director of Outreach, Denver Botanic Gardens www.botanicgardens.org The award was presented by Garden Writer/Lecturer Anna Leggatt including a generous 6 page business feature in their Quarterly Magazine. https://www.nargs.org/article/whistling-gardens https://www.nargs.org/

Finally, our spring started early with our variegated conifers cover story guest article in Fine Gardening Magazine. Although the world momentum has changed in such a short time, we are hopeful our group visits, first Quebec buses and gardening conference tours will reschedule for another year. Many still ask, what happened? So we reflect back and remain grateful to our dedicated circle of garden friends keeping us inspired by their kind support. This includes over 4,000+ gardeners, members, national media, garden societies, clubs, organizations Garden Making Magazine and the Canadian Garden Council lending their written support to restore our 5 year permissions which are functions of botanical gardens due to a staff policy review. With gratitude, thank you to Norfolk Council http://www.whistlinggardens.ca/temp/Thank-You-WG.jpg who made everything right again. We plant in perpetuity, reinvesting profits, to fulfill our botanical vision. As land stewards the gardens reflect our life’s work and purpose. To our surprise, we are now receiving private donor offers by

several growers, businesses and garden supporters as great care is taken to acknowledge each gift of kindness. We plant for you, our valued garden centre customers, botanical gardens season members and visitors from around the globe who share our passion and purpose. Guests should feel as if we are inviting them to experience an extension of their own private garden. Your genuine exchanges of encouragement are truly heartfelt as we share our private story of transforming our "corn field into a botanical garden" leaving us feeling like the little garden that could.
