Dear Cyclists, 5k Run/Walkers, Volunteers, Donors, and Friends,

Welcome to the Sixth Annual Dolphins Cancer Chal-lenge! We are thrilled to have you join us for an event whichhas quickly become an exciting annual tradition in SouthFlorida’s fight against cancer. In just five years, with the helpof our riders, partners, and volunteers, we were able to do-nate almost $11.55 million to tackle cancer, with 100% ofthe funds going directly to Sylvester Comprehensive CancerCenter at the University of Miami. This year will be evenBIGGER than last year. We’ve evolved our name (fromDolphins Cycling Challenge) to respect our roots and reflecton the expanded goals of the DCC – keeping the focus onfighting cancer and increasing the options for participation, including the addition of the concert celebration presentedby Pepsi at the AutoNation finish line celebration!

As many of you know, a great deal of inspiration for theDolphins Cancer Challenge was drawn from my father, leg-endary Dolphins Alumni and radio commentator, Jim“Mad Dog” Mandich, who was courageously battling bileduct cancer during the first Dolphins Cancer Challenge.Unfortunately, my father passed away in April of 2011. Wewill continue to remember my dad through the memorial“88” patch on our jerseys as well as the “88 Mad Dog Lane”marked on the finish line.

Thanks to the incredible team at Sylvester, my father wasable to receive world-class treatment right here in his home-town with our family by his side. While we sometimes takethem for granted, we must always remember premier cancerfacilities such as Sylvester do not build themselves; to thecontrary, they require tremendous financial resources. Byteaming up with our friends, fans, and family members toraise money as part of the Dolphins Cancer Challenge, wecan have a great time engaging in a healthy hobby, and alsoimprove the lives of thousands of cancer patients.

We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors for help-ing make this extraordinary event possible. We are alsodeeply appreciative of our partnership with the Universityof Miami, and an extra special thank you goes out to eachand every one of you for making this charitable initiative asuccess – we couldn’t have done it without you.

Ride and run safely! Go Fins!

Michael Mandich CEO, Dolphins Cancer Challenge

SAFETY TIPS • Use a helmet and other safety equipment.

Helmets and other safety equipment, such asreflective clothing and lights, save lives. USE THEM!Helmets are required.

• Be predictable. Group riding requires even moreattention to predictability than riding alone. Otherriders expect you to continue straight ahead at aconstant speed unless you indicate differently.

• Use signals. Use hand and verbal signals to

Page 10: Dear Cyclists, 5k Run/Walkers, Volunteers, Donors, · Dear Cyclists, 5k Run/Walkers, Volunteers, Donors, and Friends, Welcome to the Sixth Annual Dolphins Cancer Chal-lenge! We are

communicate with fellow cyclists and other traffic.Hand signals for turning and stopping are: left armstraight out to signal a left turn; left arm out anddown with your palm to the rear to signal slowingor stopping; and for a right turn, put your right armstraight out or put our left arm out and up.

• Give warnings. Warn cyclists behind you well inadvance of changes in your direction or speed.Call out turns in addition to giving a hand signal.

• Announce hazards. When riding in a group, mostof the cyclists do not have a good view of the roadsurface in front of them, so it is important toannounce holes, glass, sand, grates, and otherhazards. The leader should indicate hazards bypointing down to the left or right and by shouting“hole,” “bump,” etc. where required for safety.

• Watch out at intersections. When approachingintersections that require vehicles to yield or stop, the lead rider will say “slowing” or “stopping” toalert those behind to the change in speed. Whenpassing through an intersection, some cyclists say“clear” if there is no cross-traffic. Note that eachcyclist is individually responsible for confirmingthat an intersection is safe to cross.

• Watch for traffic coming from the rear. Riders infront cannot see traffic approaching from the rear.It is the responsibility of riders in back to informother cyclists by saying “car back.” It is alsohelpful to warn of traffic approaching from thefront with “car up.”

• Change positions correctly. Generally, slowertraffic stays right. You should pass others on theirleft. Say “on your left” to warn the cyclist you planon passing. If you need to pass on the right forsome reason, say “on your right” loud and clear.

• Leave a gap for cars. When riding up hills or onnarrow roads with traffic, leave a gap for carsbetween every three or four bicycles to allowmotorists the ability to pass.

• Move off the road when you stop. Whatever thereason for stopping, be sure to move well offthe road so you don’t interfere with traffic. Whenyou restart, each cyclist should look for, andyield to, traffic.

- Rules Of The Road -• All DCC routes will be supported by police and

Florida Highway Patrol.

• Most intersections will be controlled by police. However, unless otherwise instructed by thesepolice, ALL CYCLISTS will be expected to obey alltraffic signals and rules of the road.

WHY WE USE CONES - 5 quick reasons the DCC uses cones -

1 For YOUR safety! It is our No. 1 priority.

2 To help provide a barrier between riders and vehicles.

3 To make our cyclists visible to traffic.

4 To provide our cyclists with a bike lane in areaswhere one does not exist.

5 To make our riders more accessible to SAGvehicles & pace cars in case of needed assistance.

HOW TO USE CONES

- 5 ways to use cones effectively -1 ALWAYS stay to the right side of the cones.

2 When passing, COMMUNICATE with other ridersinstead of weaving outside the cones.

3 Ride two abreast.

4 Treat the cone lane as if it is a bike lane.

5 If assistance is needed, wait with bike off ofpavement until SAG vehicle arrives.

DCC VI RIDE MODEL- How To Use Our Ride Model -

1 Riders will not be held to a specific pace.

2 No more pace vehicles.

3 Lead car and tail car only (FHP will still provide escort).

4 Ride marshals will provide paces for those riderswho like to be paced.

5 SAG vehicles will provide all pick-ups, medical &mechanical assistance.

6 SAG vehicles will be stationary until needed, not onthe route.

RIDE MARSHALSOur ride marshals can be spotted by their referee

jerseys. These folks are trained cycling safetyenthusiasts that sit through a training session wherethey learn about our routes, rules of the road andspecific DCC communication techniques. They are herefor your safety! Please abide by all of their rules and usethem for any questions you may have. They will beresponsible for assisting with any mechanical ormedical issues you experience along the route. Pleasebe sure to thank them for their service!

STADIUM PARKING All cars must enter the stadium through Gate 2. Once

through Gate 2, cars will be directed where to park.Take the Turnpike Access Road to enter through Gate 2.Cars will NOT be able to enter through the stadium’smain gate. If you are not staying for the concert andplanning to have someone pick you up, direct them toGate 2 and follow signs to the family/friend pick-up area.

FINISH LINE SHOWERS We will be providing a shower trailer for riders

post-ride at Sun Life Stadium. Please pack accordinglyif you plan to shower after your ride and before the concert.

SPORTS NUTRITION **Food and beverage choices of what to eat vary fromperson to person and sport to sport (GI issues, less trainedathletes, type of sport/movement – runner vs. cyclists, exercise intensity, emotional and mental stress…)

Pre Workout Snack high carb (maintain bloodglucose/fuel to workout) + contains some protein (to helpmaintain fuel, diminish muscle damage and breakdown)

Main Goal: To have energy for working out; carbs arebody’s preferred source of energy!

• Helps prevent low blood sugar (symptoms: fatigue, light headed, blurred vision)

• Helps settle your stomach and ward off hunger

• Will fuel your muscles - both the carbs you eat inadvance for stored glycogen (aka stored fuel) andthe carbs eaten within an hour before your workout.

Page 13: Dear Cyclists, 5k Run/Walkers, Volunteers, Donors, · Dear Cyclists, 5k Run/Walkers, Volunteers, Donors, and Friends, Welcome to the Sixth Annual Dolphins Cancer Chal-lenge! We are

9

• Carbs digest faster than protein and fat andtherefore quickly become readily available fuel.

- A few things to consider -1 Make sure what you eat sits well in your stomach.

Foods low in fat and fiber will digest easily.

2 Hydrate well with water before, during, and afterexercise. Aim to get 16 ounces of water 1-2 hoursbefore exercise of any type.

3 The important part of a pre exercise meal is gettingglucose (aka fuel) to the muscles.

(Pre workout) 3-4 hours before exercise if eatinglarge meal; 2-3 hours prior for smaller meal; 1- 2hours prior for liquid meal; less than an hour prior forsmall snack

Eating During Exercise if you are performingendurance exercise, you can actually increase yourstamina and strength by consuming carbohydrates duringexercise. 100 - 250 calories (25 g – 60 g) of carb everyhour after the first hour of exercise will help do the trick.

• Practice eating during training to figure out whatfoods work for you. Try a bagel, banana, fruit juice, pretzels, or sports specific nutrition like gels andgummies. Calories can be taken in through liquidsas well. Solid foods will last longer. Water stopsalong the DCC route will have plenty of nutritionand lunch stops will feature heartier sandwiches.

- Post Workout Snack -• 10 to 20 g protein (repair and build muscle) + high

carbs (replenish glycogen stores) + water(replenish fluids lost during working out)

Trail Mix

Most fresh fruits (apple, orange, banana, raisins, dried apricots)

Apple with peanut butteror string cheese

String cheese + crackersor pretzels

Hummus with veggiesand pita bread Energybar

Cottage cheese andpeaches

Yogurt + fresh fruit

Fig Newtons (2)

English muffin or bagelwith almond butter 1packet instant oatmeal

1 cup cheerios

8 oz fruit juice

• Main Goal: Re-fuel muscles and restoreglycogen stores. Timing is important afterexercise to recover quickly and efficiently. It isbest to eat within 45 minutes of finishing a hardor long workout.

A few things to consider:

1 If you are going to be eating your next meal withinan hour or two, then a small snack of 150-200calories will be sufficient. If your meal will besooner, then just use the meal to refuel.

2 If you are the type of person who is not hungryafter working out, at least eat something small(100 calories) or choose liquid foods, like asmoothie, within 45 minutes. Solid and liquid carbcontaining foods are both are equally effective!

3 You need 16 ounces of water for every pound youlost during exercise. Drink at least 16-20 ounces ofwater after every exercise session. Weigh yourselfbefore and after exercise to determine sweat loss.

(Post workout) You can get about 10 g of proteinfrom: 10 oz. milk, 2 eggs, 2 Tbsp. peanut butter, 1 cupyogurt or ½ cup cottage cheese. If you had a hardworkout and will be exercising again in 3-4 hoursconsume 0.5 g of carb per pound of body weightevery hour, eaten at 30 minute intervals for four tofive hours. You can eat more than the calculatedamount if you are hungry for more calories but extracarbs beyond the calculated amount will notaccelerate recovery any faster.

HYDRATION• Two (2) hours before your ride, drink at least 16

ounces of water, juice or sports drink. Your kidneysneed 60-90 minutes to process liquids before riding.

• Many cyclists carry 2 bottles on their bike; one forwater and one for an electrolyte replacementsports beverage. During the ride, drink 8-10 oz. ofsports drink for every 15-20 minutes of strenuous

V8 juice + lean meatsandwich

Fruit Smoothie (madewith yogurt or milk) +some pretzels

Juice, string cheese, crackers Bowl of cereal, banana, and milk

Cottage Cheese, fruit,pita bread

11

exercise, or about 1 bottle per hour. Adequatehydration results in pale yellow or clear urine.

• Weight loss during exercise indicates fluids are notproperly being replaced. Weight gain duringexercise is a sure sign of over hydration. Tryweighing yourself before and after a long ride, andafterwards drink 32 oz. of water for every 16 oz. ofweight loss.

HYPONATREMIA• Do not over consume water or you may end up

suffering from hyponatremia, known as watertoxicity. Switching to sports drinks after the firsthours of riding will help you avoid this issue.

• Your sweat contains electrolytes, not just water soduring excessive sweating it is important toreplace electrolytes and water. i.e. Gatorade

This year we will have over 500 volunteers along ourroutes. Volunteers play a major role in the success ofthe DCC. DCC volunteers will receive a T-Shirt foridentification and as a “Thank You” for their support.

MASSAGE Massages by Beauty Schools of America will be

available for all riders at Sun Life Stadium. Thesevolunteer massage therapists work long hours to makeyour recovery shorter, but they have a tiring task as well! For this reason, massages are only available to riders.Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
