The Value of a Liberal Arts Degree

Dr. Steven M. Oberhelman,Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs

• Employers consistently describe the skill sets

offered by a Liberal Arts degree as more important

than a specialized area of study. They want to

hire people who

• Have the ability to make ethical judgments

• Possess intercultural skills; and

• Have skills in critical thinking, creative thinking,

complex problem-solving and written and oral

communication

• The skills that a liberal arts degree today gives a

student are the very skills that employers today

value highly. They are kinds of skills that never

grow obsolete. Although the world is constantly

changing, the abilities, attributes and skills gained

in liberal arts are always relevant.
