Good evening,  Welcome to the New Zealand Golf Partner Update 58.  This monthly communication supplements our regular communication channels and provides an update from New Zealand Golf to our key partners in the golf industry.

LOVE Golf Futures is inspiring more young people and families to play golf  LOVE Golf Futures is underway!   We’re pleased to share a short video that captures the launch event held at Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club.   Please click the link here to view ‐ LOVE Golf Futures Launch Video   Since the launch, Futures Team Golf has started to provide opportunities for young golfers and parents across several parts of the country to get on course. It's a fun, four player ambrose format with six hole or nine hole options over a shortened course.   The series include options to play at a variety of courses within the region. For beginners, they can use the It's OKAY rules and all teams create their own name for a prize. Have a look at this video shot at the Greendale Golf Club in Canterbury that showcases Futures Team Golf.   As part of LOVE Golf Futures, this is just one initiative to inspire more young people to play golf.

Northland Win Toro Interprovincial

Northland Golf will never forget this day after claiming their first victory at the Men’s Toro Interprovincial in the tournaments 68‐year history by defeating Auckland 3.5‐1.5 in the final.  The team of Luke Brown, Dale Clarke, Kadin Neho, Taylor Gill and Alex Neely came out of the gates firing after defeating local hopes Canterbury in a superb semi‐final.  After squeezing into the final four yesterday, the Northlanders used all that momentum and more to carry them home and complete a fairy‐tale victory at the Clearwater Golf Club.  It’s been a golden summer for the player of the tournament and Northland Stalwart, Dale Clarke who returned to the Interprovincials for the first time in 11‐years to claim the individual honour with a record of six from eight.  Click Here for the full story.

She Loves Golf 2018

  This award‐winning campaign is back for a fourth time!  Last year 100 She Loves Golf activations were held by clubs across the country, with an average of 17 attendees, plus six from each event signing up for more coaching and memberships.   To read more about the success from 2017 CLICK HERE.  This year we have over 55 clubs engaged already – please be in touch if you wish to get involved.  

Competitions  Thanks to our partner Experience Golf, participants in She Loves Golf have the chance to win a holiday to Vanuatu.  The Package includes: 

Return flights for 2 from Auckland on Air Vanuatu in economy class.  

5 x nights’ accommodation at The Ramada Resort, Port Vila in a Junior Suite including breakfast daily.

Corporate Responsibility

More companies are recognising the benefits of encouraging their female staff to try golf as part of Corporate Responsibility.   Similar to TAB (check out case study here), a group of women from Chorus were hosted at Remuera Golf Club for a She Loves Golf event run by New Zealand Golf and the PGA.   The group of 25 keen women were split into three groups and rotated through 20 mins of putting, chipping and driving range fun. Finished off with some drinks and platters. Most having no experience at all were having a great time with their team and enjoying their first taste of golf!

“We had the first of our free clinics for ladies at South Head today. Nine ladies showed up including 5 who never before played golf. The coaching clinic with Scott was great and they all took off down the fairway afterwards. They then met in the Clubhouse for drinks and socialising. The stock of goodies we received from She Loves Golf also went down a treat. While the proof is in the pudding, as they say, it looks like all will be back next week and perhaps even a few more.   The New Zealand Golf Industry Council is an advocacy body for the whole golf industry.  Forums that brought the industry together identified the need for research to drive this advocacy to both a central and local government. 

The Council has focussed its energy in this area and worked with partners both inside and outside of the industry.  Progress has been made on the following research projects:  

The Health Benefits of Golf. 

The Economic Value of Golf. 

The Environmental Value of Golf.  The Council look forward to sharing the progress and outcomes of this work during 2019.

Golf Sector Environmental Group 

 Strategic Partnerships The Golf Sector Environmental Group came together for their third meeting of the year. The focus for 2018 has been developing strategic partnerships to help us understand and improve the environmental impact of golf in New Zealand.  The group has made significant progress and are already in trials with the Department of Conservation and LiteClub ‐ an environmental charity. 

Watch this space in 2019 as we bring you more detail of how golf can play a role in the biodiversity of New Zealand, reduce our carbon footprint and lead the sports sector in environmental stewardship.

Rules Modernisation Project – 1 January 2019

With the new rules just around the corner golf clubs should now be thinking about their local rules and new definitions of penalty areas as well as whether or not they want to introduce the new stroke and distance local rule.   Over the last couple of weeks you will have been receiving updated information from New Zealand Golf and in the mail are some posters outlining the major changes to the rules.    Our website now has a new section “New Rules 2019” which has a series of short videos which explain the major changes really nicely.    The following useful information has been sent to clubs and is available on our website.

Sport Integrity Review – public consultation now open  

Sport NZ are undertaking a nationwide public consultation on their review into sport integrity, calling on anyone involved in sport to share their thoughts on a range of integrity issues through an online survey.  The review is being conducted over two phases: the first will assess the current environment, identify priority areas where existing policies and protections may be insufficient, and gather evidence to support future interventions. Phase two will develop solutions to problems within these priority areas.    Sport NZ would like your help with phase one. Given the very broad nature of the issues covered, they are inviting submissions from anyone with an interest in any of the review topics. Your input will help Sport NZ draw a full picture of the current sport integrity landscape in New Zealand.   There are three ways you can submit:

History – Toro Interprovincials  For a fortnight the best amateurs in the country represent their District for teams supremacy.   The Toro Interprovincials has been a major event on the New Zealand Golf calendar for nearly 70 years and this year Christchurch hosts both the men’s and women’s tournaments.   The women played their first championship in 1949 with the 70th hosted by Waitikiri Golf Club this week. Auckland have been an incredible force in this competition since winning the inaugural event at Invercargill and adding 24 titles since. They are in the midst of their second dominant era, with five straight wins from 1976 to 1980 and then winning six of the last seven Interprovincial titles. The closest competitor with 17 championships is Bay of Plenty Thames Valley.  Wellington have won the most titles (14) in the men’s Interprovincial and also won the inaugural event in 1951 which was played at Christchurch Golf Club. Their golden era came in the 1990’s when legendary coach Mal Tongue had a major influence in talent development at that time, with six titles between 1990 and 1999. Auckland are the next most successful team with 12 titles and the strength of these two power Districts is still noticeable today.   The Interprovincials serve as a fantastic pathway vehicle with greats Sir Bob Charles, Michael Campbell, Lydia Ko, Greg Turner, Danny Lee, Brenda Ormsby, Lynnette Brooky, Marnie McGuire, Ryan Fox and many more having played this exciting team’s match play event.
