PRE-SERVICE DEVOTION: Psalm 24 (p.128, red hymnal)

PRE-SERVICE PRAYER: O Lord God, may the truths I learn today as I sit in Your presences and worship in Your house serve to guide me in my life outside these walls each day. Help me to be a faithful steward of every-thing You entrust to me, so that by my words and actions I might honor Your saving name and bring blessing to all among whom I live and work. It is in Jesus’ name that I pray. Amen.

PRE-SERVICE ENSEMBLE: “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

(soloist: Diane Bode; accompanist: Karla Olmanson)

ORDER OF SERVICE [Worship Supplement 2000, pp. 12ff]

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

ENTRANCE HYMN: 8 — “Father, Who the Light This Day”

When the congregation is asked to stand, please do so only if you are able. You may remain seated if standing is difficult.

WELCOME in the name of Jesus, whose faithful stewards we strive to be! INVOCATION (Pastor): In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Congregation:

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Text: from Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal © 1993 Northwestern Publishing House. All rights reserved. OneLicense.net License #A-710933

Pastor: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy.

Congregation: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

3

Pastor: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has re-moved your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will.

Congregation:

THE SERVICE OF THE WORD

Congregation (sings): Lord, have mercy on us,

Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.

GLORY TO GOD, WE GIVE YOU THANKS

Text: Edwin LeGrice © 1991 Kevin Mayhew Ltd. All rights reserved. OneLicense.net License #A-710933

1. Glory to God, we give You thanks and praise;

Of heav'nly joy and peace on earth we sing.

We worship You, to You our hearts we raise,

Lord God, almighty Father, heav'nly King.

2. Lord Jesus Christ, the Father's only Son,

You bore for us the load of this world's sin.

O Lamb of God, Your glorious vict'ry won,

Receive our prayer, grant us Your peace within.

3. Alone, O Christ, You only are the Lord,

At God's right hand in majesty most high:

Who, with the Spirit worshiped and adored,

With all the heav'nly host we glorify.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: Let us pray . . . . . . through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Congregation:

FIRST LESSON: Proverbs 16:1-9

Our human hearts, although created by God, are often because of sin found in opposition to God. That is why it is so important that we listen to God, follow God, and rejoice in God, for He ultimately directs our steps into blessing.

MUSICAL ENSEMBLE: “Take My Life and Let It Be” (WS #786) SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 10:6-13

The children of Israel rebelled against God in the wilderness and ended up wandering there for forty years. Their example should move us to entrust ourselves to God, knowing that He will be with us and enable us to overcome temptation.

Pastor: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it.

Congregation (sings):

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

BAPTISMAL HYMN: 753 (tan Supplement) —“Let the Children Come to Me”

BAPTISM: son of Junior & Grace Bantoe Witnesses: Johnson Nyumah Yorfuwah & Paul D. Nolting

APOSTOLIC CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there He will come to judge

5

the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

CHILDREN'S SERMON: (Sun. a.m.)

Children (pre-school-2nd grade) are invited to come forward and gather around the pastor in the front of the church.

HYMN OF THE DAY: “Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us”

(italicized syllables are sung on more than one note)

1. Lord of glo-ry, You have bought us With Your life-blood as the price, Never grudging for the lost ones That tremendous sac-ri-fice, And with that have freely giv-en Blessings countless as the sand To th’ unthankful and the e-vil With Your own unsparing hand. 2. Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to give You Gladly, freely, of Your own. With the sunshine of Your goodness Melt our thankless hearts of stone Till our cold and selfish natures, Warmed by You, at length believe That more hap-py and more blessed 'Tis to give than to receive. 3. Wondrous honor You have given To our humblest charity In Your own mysterious sentence, "You have done it unto Me." Can it be, O gracious Master, That You need what we can do, Saying by Your poor and needy, "Give as I have giv’n to you"?

6

4. Yes, the sorrow and the suff’rings Which on ev’ry hand we view Channels are for gifts and off’rings Due by solemn right to You, Right of which we may not rob You, Debt we may not choose but pay Lest that face of love and pity Turn from us another day. 5. Lord of glo-ry, You have bought us With Your life-blood as the price, Never grudging for the lost ones That tremendous sac-ri-fice, Give us faith to trust You boldly, Hope, to stay our souls on You; But, oh, best of all Your graces, With Your love our love renew.

SERMON: Text - Luke 16:1-13

WE ARE ALL STEWARDS OF GOD! THE QUESTION IS: ARE WE FAITHFUL STEWARDS?

I. Are we wasting what God has entrusted to us?

II. Are we making financial decisions with eternity in mind?

III. Are we truly serving God, or are we serving money?

Pastor Paul D. Nolting

SERMON NOTES:

OFFERTORY—Congregation (sings):

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence. Take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation. Uphold with Your Spirit free.

HYMN: “Almighty Father, Bless the Word”

Almighty Father, bless the Word Which through Your grace we now have heard, Oh, may the precious seed take root, Spring up, and bear abundant fruit! We praise You for the means of grace As homeward now our steps we trace. Grant, Lord, that we who worshiped here May all at last in heav’n appear. MUSICIANS ARISE! Acting on a suggestion they received, the Deacons invite musicians of the congregation to play music in the sanctuary from 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. on Sundays prior to the usual pre-service music of the organist. The music may be played on the piano, organ, or other instruments and should be such that does not hinder the service meditation and preparation of those in the sanctu-ary. If you would like to be scheduled to play, please do so through the church secretary (email, phone, or in person). Summer Ensembles/Music for Worship: During the school year, we enjoy the bless-ing of having a choir present a musical selec-tion nearly every week. The musical presen-tations of God’s Word are a valued addition to our worship services. During the summer the choirs are not in session. Thus, if you would like to offer your musical talents to a worship service, please contact either pastor. This may be an instrumental selection, solo, duet, ensemble, etc.

Summer Heat: Please note that during the summer months, if the

sanctuary is too oppressive for you, the church service may be

viewed in the conference room/office via the TV. Air conditioning is

available in that room.

Travel Light!

Travel light through this world as far as your

earthly possessions are concerned. You’ll leave

them all behind one day. But pack in excess

every Word of the Lord which nourishes and

sustains you and will bring you safely from this

world on in to the next.

Excess baggage keeps us from effectively being available to Him,

“Therefore...let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin

that so easily entangles” (Hebrews 12:1).
