Nas ruas e avenidas da região central de São Paulo, o passado e o presente se misturam nas fachadas. Seja no colonial Pateo do Collegio ou no art déco Edifício Martinelli, que marcou o início da verticali-zação da cidade, a história é apresentada sob o céu da me-trópole. O moderno também está ali: em endereços que até pouco tem-po não eram considerados nobres hoje es-tão bares, cafés e restaurantes descolados.

Entre os autores dessa história feita de concreto estão arquitetos com fama mundial. Obras de Oscar Niemeyer, Pau-lo Mendes da Rocha e Ramos de Azeve-do compõem a identidade da região. “Os prédios que estão por lá foram tão mar-cantes que mantiveram um garbo, uma elegância que permanece”, afirma o ar-quiteto e urbanista Candido Malta Cam-pos Filho, professor emérito da Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universi-dade de São Paulo (FAU-USP).

Aos poucos, o agito de outrora está vol-tando e só faz bem aos bairros da área. En-tre os lugares que ganharam novos frequen-tadores e atrações estão a Praça Roosevelt, lar de companhias de teatro e reduto de skatistas, e até mesmo a via elevada Pre-sidente Artur da Costa e Silva, o Minho-cão. Inaugurada em 1971, é considerada um dos equívocos urbanísticos de São Paulo, mas nos últimos anos ganhou fãs, como os ciclistas que passeiam por ali à noite e aos domingos, quando o local é interdita-do. Desde julho, passou a ser fechado ao trânsito também aos sábados, após as 15h.

Quem quer mergulhar nessa porção da cidade tem ainda outros dois incentivos. Há ali estações de metrô, ciclovias e cor-redores de ônibus que facilitam a vida de quem explora a área. Para descobrir o que mais o Centro tem, veja as dicas de quem vive no coração de São Paulo.

In the streets and avenues of São Paulo’s central region, the past and present blend together in the facades. Whether at the co-

lonial Pateo do Collegio or the art deco Edifício Martinelli, which marked the beginning of the city’s verticalization, histo-ry is alive under the skies of the metropolis. The modern is also

there: addresses which up until recently were considered far from upscale are now home to hip bars, cafés and restaurants.

This history was written in concrete by some world-famous architects. The work of Oscar Niemeyer, Paulo Mendes da Rocha and Ramos de Azevedo comprises the re-gion’s identity. “The buildings there were so striking that they have maintained a cer-tain grace, an elegance that remains,” says architect and urban planner Candido Mal-ta Campos Filho, professor Emeritus at the University of São Paulo’s School of Archi-tecture and Urban Planning (FAU-USP).

Little by little, the excitement of the past is coming back to the benefit of the region’s neighborhoods. Among the places drawing new regulars and attractions is Praça Roosevelt, home to theater compa-nies and a hangout for skateboarders, and even the Presidente Artur da Costa e Silva Overpass — better known as Minhocão. Opened in 1971, the structure long con-sidered one of São Paulo’s biggest urban planning blunders has, in recent years, won fans like the cyclists who bike there at night and on Sundays, when it’s closed off to cars. Since July, started to be closed also on Saturdays.

It was at Praça Dom José Gaspar, between the subway stations of República and Anhan-gabaú, that Luiz and Aline first met. At the time, she was involved with the opening of Al-berta #3 (a nightclub that draws a 30-some-thing crowd, with a modern soundtrack) and he was in the midst of opening Cafete-ria Santa Fé, at number 42 in the plaza. After it opened, the café drew a nostalgic clientele.

“Because of the customers who would come in, we started learning about the his-tory of Paribar, a restaurant/bar that ex-isted until the 1980s and really made an impact on people’s lives,” explains Luiz. “I started doing research on the place and ended up reclaiming the name.”

For Aline, the name fits like a glove. “Peo-ple passing by used to see the name and ask to speak to the chef. Some said they had run into Mick Jagger or Che Guevara here. They brought in a bunch of presents, old photos, original dishes... It’s an important place; peo-ple remember it affectionately.”

Aline and Luiz talk about the region where they live and work with the same af-fection. Residents of the Edifício Louvre, de-signed by João Artacho Jurado, on Aveni-da São Luís, along with their children Liam (from Aline’s first marriage) and Mia, the two of them rarely venture out of the city center. “This place is like another city. The people are diverse, the buildings are incred-ible and there’s a concentration of cultur-al centers, all very close together,” says Luiz.

The married couple’s experience is a clear example of the change that the area is undergoing. “Five years ago, I wouldn’t go out alone,” says Aline. These days, with more people circulating, she doesn't have this problem anymore. “On Sundays, the region would be completely deserted. Un-til we started opening for brunch. Now, it is filled with people, the atmosphere is pleasant. An empty place is bad; it’s good when it’s occupied. And this is what’s happening in the center.”

Na época, ela estava envolvida com a inau-guração do Alberta #3 (balada frequenta-da por um público de 30 e poucos e com discotecagem moderna) e ele, estabele-cendo o Paribar, no número 42 da pra-ça (um lugar que, desde sua inauguração, recebia visitantes saudosos).

“Pelos clientes que vinham aqui, come-çamos a descobrir a história do restau-rante, que existia até a década de 1980 e marcou muito a vida das pessoas”, explica Luiz. “Eu abri, inicialmente, com o nome Santa Fé, mas pesquisei mais sobre o lu-gar e consegui recuperar o nome”, diz.

Para Aline, o que aconteceu foi uma felicidade conjunta. “As pessoas que pas-savam viam o nome e pediam para falar com o chef. Algumas diziam que tinham cruzado aqui com o Mick Jagger, com o Che Guevara. Trouxeram um monte de presentes, fotos antigas, pratos ori-

ginais... É um lugar que foi importante, lembram dele com afeto.”

É com afeto que Aline e Luiz falam da região onde vivem e trabalham. Mo-radores do Edifício Louvre, um projeto de Artacho Jurado, na Avenida São Luís, junto dos filhos Liam (do primeiro casa-mento de Aline) e Mia, os dois raramen-te saem do Centro. “Aqui é como outra cidade. Você encontra uma diversidade de pessoas, os prédios são incríveis e há uma concentração de aparelhos cultu-rais, tudo muito perto”, diz Luiz.

A vivência do casal é um exemplo cla-ro da mudança pela qual passa a área. "Há cinco anos, eu não saía sozinha na rua", conta Aline. Hoje, com mais gente circu-lando, ela não tem mais esse problema. "No domingo era completamente deserto por aqui. Isso até a gente começar a abrir para o brunch. Hoje, a região é cheia de gente, tem uma atmosfera gostosa. Um lugar vazio é ruim, ocupado é bom. É isso que vem acontecendo com o Centro.”

Inside the elegant curves of the Edifício Copan, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, is an entire universe apart from the rest of the city center. It has over 1,000 apart-ments, distributed throughout six blocks, and nearly 5,000 residents. Plus: dozens of businesses occupy the building’s out-er atrium, including shops, cafés and res-taurants. You’ll also find one of the hot-test eateries in the center, Bar da Dona Onça. It’s run by chef and owner Janaina Rueda — Dona Onça herself. She got the nickname both for her love for the animal (onça is Portuguese for “jaguar”) as well as her quick temper.

Janaina speaks with fondness of the region where she was born and ended up making her home as an adult, when she opened her business and moved with her husband and kids to an apartment in the Copan. “This place was my home even when I didn’t live here. When I was

a kid, I used to take the streetcar here from Mooca just to have a hot dog with pepper sauce,” she says. “People don’t do that anymore. They aren’t familiar with the city they live in. There are incredible things around here that almost no one knows about, like the tombs beneath Ca-tedral da Sé, which tell the entire history of the city’s foundation.”

Along with her husband, renowned chef Jefferson Rueda, she runs a series of culinary events and defends the idea of transform-ing Minhocão into a park. “It’s a struggle. The center used to be a marvelous place, but mostly unpopulated. They called me crazy when I opened a bar here, but, over time, I could see that people felt more welcome here, transforming the vicinity into a nicer place. It’s the same thing with other businesses,” she explains. “I truly believe in this place. If you want to see change, you need to stop and make it happen. That’s all there is to it.”

As elegantes e sinuosas linhas do Edi-fício Copan, de Oscar Niemeyer, deli-mitam um universo à parte no Centro. Existem ali mais de mil apartamentos, distribuídos por seis blocos, e quase 5 mil moradores. Mais: dezenas de ne-gócios ocupam a galeria do prédio, en-tre lojas, cafés e restaurantes. É lá que fica um dos mais badalados cardápios do Centro, o do Bar da Dona Onça. Quem assina é a chef e proprietária Ja-naina Rueda — a Dona Onça em carne e osso, apelido que ganhou tanto pela paixão que tem pelo animal quanto pelo temperamento forte.

É com carinho que Janaina fala da re-gião onde nasceu e que acabou adotando novamente na vida adulta, quando abriu o negócio e se mudou com o marido e os filhos para um apartamento no próprio Copan. “Esse lugar foi minha casa mes-mo quando eu não vivia aqui. Quando era criança, eu saía da Mooca, tomava o elé-trico e vinha para cá só para comer um ca-chorro-quente com molho de pimentão”, conta. Tem coisas incríveis por aqui que quase ninguém sabe, como o passeio pelas tumbas da Catedral da Sé, que conta toda a história da fundação da cidade”, diz.

Ao lado do marido, o chef Jefferson Rueda, ela protagoniza uma série de eventos gastronômicos e defende a trans-formação do Minhocão em parque. “É tudo uma luta. O Centro era um lugar maravilhoso, mas pouco ocupado. Acha-vam que eu estava louca quando abri o bar aqui, mas, com o tempo, deu para ver que isso convidava as pessoas a estar no Centro e a transformar os arredores num lugar mais bacana. Com os outros negó-cios é a mesma coisa”, explica. “Eu acre-dito muito nesse lugar. Se você quer ver mudança, precisa parar e fazer.” O casal continua a aposta na região: neste mês está prevista a inauguração da Casa do Porco, o novo restaurante de Jefferson.
