Welcome

Foreword by De Montfort University’s Vice-Chancellor

Welcome to De Montfort University’s 2017 graduation ceremony at the City University of Hong Kong.

Alongside our celebration of so many individual achievements today, it is important that we also celebrate the friendship and strong partnership between CityU and DMU. That partnership is founded on shared values, including a commitment to excellence and a truly global outlook. We want our industry-aligned degrees to give all our graduates a clear advantage in a competitive international jobs market. Those continuing their studies will do so in a spirit of openness and curiosity encouraged and nurtured through your studies at CityU.

Although attention is rightly focused on those receiving their certificates, it is important that our celebrations include so many others, too. Families, friends, teachers, and all those who have supported the graduands in their endeavours and achievements deserve a share of the thanks and applause.

Graduation is an important personal landmark. You can now go on to find enriching roles across the globe, as your fellow alumni have done. But, wherever you go and however far you travel, remember that you remain a part of the DMU community. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are facing the future and engaging with the world.

Your individual success also comes with a responsibility to help others who need your newly recognised knowledge and expertise. I hope and expect you will do so, and I wish you every success.

With best wishes,

Professor Dominic ShellardVice-Chancellor

Welcome

Welcome from the Director of CityU SCOPE

CityU SCOPE and De Montfort University (DMU) have enjoyed a strong partnership since 1995 on the provision of quality bachelor’s degrees in business and public administration and have nurtured more than 4,000 graduates over the years. We take pride in working with DMU, a university ranked Gold under the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) in 2017. The award is a recognition of the consistently outstand-ing teaching and learning on offer at DMU and the extraordinary impact it has on students. Likewise, CityU is ranked 49th in the world, 7th in Asia and 4th among the world’s top 50 universities under 50 years in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings in 2017. I would like to invite all graduands to share our joy and pride in this fruitful partnership and the excellent progress of the two universities.

I am delighted to congratulate the success and achievements of all our graduands of BA (Hons) Business Administration and Management, as well as BA (Hons) Public Administration and Management. Your support and feedback on your achievements are adding value to the collective reputation and enhancement of the programmes and will serve to facilitate more potential students to make an informed decision in the future.

During the course of your studies, you have demonstrated your capability to overcome the various challenges that have come your way. This is not an easy task and I am confident that you have grown intellectually after scaling new heights in your academic attainments. Today, you are receiving your well-deserved award that signifies your persistence and sacrifices have paid off.

While it is true that your accomplishments are the results of your personal commitment, hard work and sacrifice, please do not forget to thank those who have contributed to your success, such as the academic and administrative staff from both DMU and CityU SCOPE, your classmates, family members and friends.

As the world changes and technology progresses, it is necessary for us to move with the times and enhance our competitiveness in the employment market. With the quality education you have attained, you should be able to face future challenges with confidence.

The graduation day is a memorial moment of joy and celebration. It also marks the beginning of the next milestone in your professional and career development. As an advocate of lifelong learning, I encourage you to continue to grasp every opportunity to learn, grow and contribute your efforts to the betterment of the community.

On behalf of all my colleagues, I wish you happiness and success in the future.

Davy Tsui graduated from the Public Administration and Management (BAPAM) programme in 2016. Prior to taking the BAPAM, Davy served in one of the largest property management companies in Hong Kong as a Senior Property Officer for more than 6 years. With an aim to attain the Chartered Membership of CIH, Davy decided to study the Public Administration and Management programme jointly delivered by DMU and CityU SCOPE.

During his two years of study at SCOPE, Davy gained knowledge on public administration, politics and public sector management. He said, “Both the lecturers and tutors are very

experienced and professional. Their guidance enabled me to develop a critical mindset as well as build up my own strategies to face different situations in my work position. In addition, the exchange of knowledge and experiences shared by classmates working in different sectors and organisations has provided me valuable opportunities to view and think from different stakeholders. The programme has also encouraged us to learn actively, to build up our own learning style and develop brighter prospects for our future.”

“Colleagues and friends will challenge, how does housing studies relate to public administration and management? I had the same question at the beginning.” Davy said. After studying four housing modules, Davy understands the need for housing personnel at management level to learn how the government legislates and implements housing policies.

“The first year of study in Public Administration and Management built a very good foundation to learn and enhance my knowledge in housing policy-making and housing management.”

After completing the programme, Davy has successfully completed PER booklet in one year, attained the Chartered Membership of CIH and at the same time, was promoted to Area Manager at his work place. He is now taking a master’s degree in Housing Studies at the City University of Hong Kong. “Though it is not easy to study and work at the same time, with guidance and help from teachers, the two years of study is practical, happy and worthwhile.” Davy concluded.

Evita Pang graduated from the Public Administration and Management (BAPAM) programme in 2016 with a first class honours degree. As a Chief Inspector of the Hong Kong Police Force serving the Hong Kong Government for more than 10 years, Evita is determined for both personal and career advancement. She enrolled onto the BAPAM course with the purpose of understanding the government structure and its governance, how policies are formulated as well as the relationship between the legislation and executive authorities.

Evita said that the two years of BAPAM study was challenging and fun. With a

Public Administration and ManagementBA (Hons)Graduation year: 2016

sub-degree in language related background, Evita said this did not pose any difficulties in studying public administration.

“I have a strong interest in current affairs and public administration. Although I have not studied social science or public administration before, teachers of the BAPAM programme are very professional and highly committed to giving very inspiring lectures. The use of local examples and case studies did enlighten our understanding of theories and the application.”

With a commitment to serve the Hong Kong community, Evita found content of the programme very comprehensive and practical. “The content is solid and inspiring. I learnt a lot on how a government could lead, function and perform to develop a place and their citizens whereby enhancing their competitiveness and influence to the world.”

Evita added, “With the academic knowledge gained from the programme, I am able to deal with my daily work in a more effective and efficient manner, which is beneficial to my career advancement.” In fact, Evita has been promoted to Superintendent of Police after graduating from the programme.

Apart from academic knowledge, Evita shared with us that the tight course scheduled helped to sharpen her time management and interpersonal skills. “It is valuable to meet classmates from all walks of life, with the same common interest in Public Administration and Management. We share or discuss our views on public affairs, which are always interesting and enlightening.”

Nelson Ma graduated in 2016 with a first class honours degree in Business Administration and Management (BABAM). He previously worked as a freelancer in Singapore as a Marketing and Training Manager at the Home Automation Company and a Learning and Development Facilitator at the Academic and Vocational Training Center.

Nelson decided to study the BABAM programme because he strongly believed the programme could enhance his knowledge of managing an organisation to achieve a sustainable business as well as improve his facilitating skills in training.

MA Kin Cheung, Nelson

Business Administration and Management BA (Hons)Graduation year: 2016

He said, “I am grateful that I could achieve the study objectives after the completion of the programme. For instance, I learnt how to evaluate the external and internal environment thoroughly and analyse business opportunities cautiously from the modules Strategic Management and International Marketing.”

Nelson added: “During my study I appreciated that all lecturers provided me with expert advice on report presentation and shared examples so I could improve my skill.”

After graduation, Nelson plans to study a master’s in Business Management or Training and Development. He will also assist the Home Automation Company to extend their business opportunities regionally and plans to discuss the development of vocational training with the Academic and Vocational Training Centre.

Nelson finally encouraged other students: “When we are facing any difficulties, we should not be afraid, when we are meeting with obstacles, we should not give up so easily. Be confident of yourself, as long as you can develop a plan with a wider scope, your life could be full of hope.”

Kissi Chan is a current graduate with a first class honours in the Business Administration and Management (BABAM) programme. Kissi has gained much knowledge in commercial and international business areas to advance her career prospects.

Kissi’s favourite module was the Dissertation as the form of evaluation differed from other module assessment. It helped her to take responsibility for her studies and enhance her self-management skills. The academic supervisors provided her with professional academic guidance, which enhanced her study and she now

CHAN Lai Ki, Kissi

has the skills required to select methods for undertaking a study, writing up her findings, discussing the results in discussion for her own learning and producing a detailed literature review.

Kissi is fond of her student life and cherished the opportunity she had to meet lecturers and fellow students at the City University of Hong Kong campus. Kissi said: “All of the lecturers are professional and gracious to interpret academic materials that enhance and explore the diverse approaches for my future career through this development of study. It is favorable for the growth of my communication and interpersonal skills.”

She added, “The programme is delivered to make me to be smarter as well as to learn how to trust my instincts, think critically, and stay sharp.”

Kissi finally advised other students: “Always be prepared to set yourself up to tackle challenges no matter what for your academic and future career. We need to understand there may be people that have more talent than us, but there is no excuse for anyone to work harder than we do.”

In June 2017, DMU achieved Gold, the highest ranking possible under the Teaching Excellence Framework introduced by the Government to recognise high quality learning and teaching across the higher education sector. This Gold award recognises a range of strengths for which DMU has become well-known: teaching excellence, an outstanding student experience, very high student employability, a determination to widen participation in higher education, and an unwavering commitment to improving student achievement.

A major contributor to this achievement was our #DMUglobal programme which shapes our students’ experiences, deepens and expands academic studies, broadens horizons and develops career skills.

The largest ever #DMUglobal events came in 2017. More than 1,000 students and staff, representing 46 different countries, travelled to New York for activities related to their studies, and to savour one of the world’s most exciting cities. In recent weeks, another significant #DMUglobal trip visited Berlin, a city, like New York, that stands for openness, tolerance and creativity in a sometimes anxious climate.

More than 800 students and staff visited Berlin in June, taking in more than 50 individual trips linked to their academic studies
