Christmas 2020

Dear Parishioners;

I am sure we are all looking forward to a much better year next year. There have

been lots of things we never imagined we would be experiencing and doing that

are almost second nature now.

By the same token, there are things we took for granted before that we haven't

been able to do. It feels like many things we do now we do as if our hands were

tied behind our backs.

What a challenging time we live in now. Amid our challenges however, let us not

forget the holy immortal one whose advent we have been celebrating diligently

this season in anticipation of the feast of his incarnation in which the infinitely ho-

ly one unites his divinity with our humanity.

The immortal one enters into time, giving us the gift of immortality to come as we

become partakers of the Paschal Mystery.

May you all experience wonder, joy and peace as we usher in the celebration of

Jesus’ nativity.

In Christ,

Fr. Dan

A Prayer to Combat the Coronavirus Pandemic

Most Merciful and Triune God, We come to You in our weakness. We come to You in our fear. We come to You with trust. For You alone are our hope. We place before You the disease present in our world. We turn to You in our time of need. Bring wisdom to doctors. Give understanding to scientists. Endow caregivers with compassion and generosity. Bring healing to those who are ill. Protect those who are most at risk. Give comfort to those who have lost a loved one. Welcome those who have died into Your Eternal Home. Stabilize our communities. Unite us in our compassion. Remove all fear from our hearts. Fill us with confidence in Your care. (mention your particular concerns and prayers now) Jesus, I trust in You. Jesus, I trust in You. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.

THE MENTALLY ILL The righteous cry out, the Lord hears and he rescues them from all their afflictions. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed. PSALM 34:18-20 LOVING GOD, YOU ARE ALWAYS NEAR TO US, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE ARE WEAK, SUF-FERING AND VULNERABLE. Reach out to those who experience mental illness. Lift their burdens, calm their anxiety, and quiet their fears. Surround them with your healing presence that they may know that they are not alone. We ask this through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and in the name of your Son, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. AMEN.

Dear Parishioners:

The waiting is almost over!

Please join us for Christmas Mass this year to celebrate the birth of our Lord. We will be celebrating in person as well as livestreaming some of our Masses for those who need to attend digitally:

Also, if you’re able, please consider making a Christmas donation this year to help underwrite the costs of our ministry programs and parish administration. Last year, more than 20% of our parish operations income came through donations made around Christmas and Easter, and more than 50% of donations made to the Soup Kitchen and St. Vincent Ministries also came during the same period. The pandemic threw a wrench into that this year, causing many families to stay home. Any support you can offer is greatly appre-ciated. Please go to our website at https://olf.church/ and use the “Make a Donation Today” button or send an envelope to the parish office. Gratefully in Christ, Fr. Dan

NOTE: Each year the Christmas Collection in all of the parishes of Central Washington is ear-marked for Catholic Charities—a worthwhile cause whose support I encourage here in the Di-ocese of Yakima. However, it does present a problem with regard to respecting the intent of the donor. As a guide toward that end, loose cash and loose checks, even if they are made out to the parish will have to be considered as intended for Catholic Charities if there is no accompa-nying memo line on the check. The use of parish offering envelopes will be interpreted as meaning the donor intends the offering for the parish, while a Catholic Charities envelope will be interpreted as an offering intended for Catholic Charities. Notes in or on the envelope can also clarify donor intent.

Good News Reflection * Fourth Sunday of Advent * December 20, 2020

Pray: Your plans and your timing, my Lord, are perfect. Help me to believe in You beyond my understanding and my opinion of events. Amen.

2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 Ps 89:2-5, 27-29 Romans 16:25-27 Luke 1:26-38

Our personal connection to Mary

This Sunday's Gospel shows us how the mission of Christ affected the Virgin Mary even be-fore Jesus was conceived in her womb.

Three decades later, Jesus would become the Savior of the world. However, that is not when his salvation plan began. Jesus is God; he has always existed. He is the uncreated Divine Son, the Person of the Holy Trinity who, as we proclaim in the Nicene Creed, was "born of the Fa-ther before all ages, God from God...."

His salvation plan could -- and did -- impact Mary since the moment of her own conception.

In order for God to come into our world in the flesh, his Spirit totally bathed Mary in his pure, holy presence. Therefore, even though she could not understand how the promised Messiah could be conceived within her, since she'd had no sexual relations, by the grace of God's Spirit she could know that God was the one who was asking for it and God was the one who was do-ing it. That's all she needed.

All of us are called by God to carry the presence of Christ and birth him more fully into the world. What are you doing about it? How much are you fulfilling your divine destiny? Re-member, he always empowers us to accomplish whatever he asks us to do. God knows what he's doing when he calls us to continue what Mary began, and he is always trustworthy and dependable. There is nothing to fear, no reason to hold back from fulfilling our true desti-ny.

With this in mind, when he asks us to do something for his kingdom, of course our answer is yes, right? Why wouldn't it be? Of course we want to cooperate with his plan, and we say yes to his plan even when we don't understand it nor see how God could possibly do what he says he'll do.

Often, we feel inadequate because we know we are weak, sinful, and unqualified. Don't trust your feelings about it; trust God.

Questions for Personal Reflection: When was the last time you said to God, "But how can this be? You want me to do WHAT? I don't understand why!" What were you afraid of? How strong was your trust in God?

Questions for Community Faith Sharing: When God chooses you for a task or responsibility, what helps you move from uncertainty or confusion or reluctance into saying "yes"? When the plans of God don't make sense or they seem unpleasant, how do you overcome your reluctance?

Arts and Environment

The Arts and Environment (church decorat-ing) Committee needs new team members to commit to help with this important ministry. Christmas and Easter are the biggest commit-ment but we decorate all year following the liturgical calendar. There are photo albums and notes to help but new ideas are most welcome.

Welcoming Committee The Welcoming Committee needs new team members to offer a warm welcome to our new parish members new and explanation of parish ministries and services. This committee contacts new parishioners as soon as possible by phone. We offer a warm welcome, answer questions and offer infor-mation about the ministries and provide new member introductions to the ministry
