The major goal of this program is to provide resources that will enable the PI to mentor physician-scientists and young investigators, and help them develop careers investigating human alcohol-related diseases. Education begins in the lab with translational research, which subsequently gets extended to human studies as the project evolves. Emphasis is placed on recruiting women and under-represented minorities. CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:

Direct the research efforts of post-doctoral fellows, research associates, technicians, and students (medical, undergraduate, and high school). Research projects have been focused on the following topics: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: Roles of insulin and IGF deficiency and resistance in relation to CNS developmental defects Long-term effects of chronic gestational exposure to alcohol in relation to cognitive-motor impairments—roles of insulin/IGF resistance and oxidative stress Liver-Brain axis of neurodegeneration in peripheral insulin resistance caused by chronic alcohol exposure or obesity/diabetes mellitus Potential therapeutic effects of insulin sensitizer agents in preventing long-term adverse effects of chronic prenatal alcohol exposure. Dietary soy abates long-term neurocognitive deficits caused by chronic alcohol abuse Pathogenesis of alcohol-related peripheral neuropathy and myopathy in experimental animal models and humans: role of insulin resistance Environmental mediators and exacerbators of neurodegeneration: Focus on nitrosamine exposures and additive effects on high dietary fat intake

TEACHING AND ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP ROLES Directed laboratory sections of the "Human Nervous System and Behavior" course at Harvard Medical School (1984-1992). Currently teach seminars in the Health Science Technology HST 100 (Harvard-MIT) pathophysiology course. Active member of the clinical Neuropathology staff at the MGH. Assume full-service clinical responsibilities in Neuropathology and General Autopsy Pathology for 12 weeks per year. Work includes sign-out, teaching, leading conferences, and administrative duties. Consultant neuropathologist and lecturer at the New Hampshire Hospital/Dartmouth Medical Center. Guide and assist a number of investigators to perform and interpret in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical studies, as well as analyze histopathological lesions generated experimentally. This role has proven crucial for the successful completion and interpretation of a number of studies conducted at the MGH East Cancer Center where my laboratory is located. In addition, my participation in these and other studies has generated preliminary data required for approval and funding of other principal investigators' independent research awards. Guide residents and fellows through clinical projects to encourage participation in research and academic medicine. Examples of projects completed or in progress: Carried out collaborative research with scientists at the MGH Cancer Center, Cardiovascular Research Center. Direct and supervise undergraduate, medical and graduate student research projects in a laboratory setting Deliver research conferences, grand rounds, seminars, and teaching modules at Brown University and affiliated hospitals 2-4 times per month Mentor to minority summer research trainees (undergraduate and medical school) interested in careers in biomedical science or medicine (1994-present). All trainees participate in research projects and all have completed sufficient work to attain co-authorship on peer-reviewed manuscripts. Mentor to impoverished high school students attending Boston public schools. Supervise homework performance, provide tutoring in all subjects, provide supplementary educational and cultural enrichment experiences, as well as training in laboratory techniques and in the use of computers, including internet research; ensure basic literacy and math skills; provide social counseling for individual growth; communicate closely with teachers to monitor improvement and test performance.
