    The double degree programme aims to provide a sciencedriven, engineeringoriented education to both science and engineeringstudents. Why? Understanding the physics underlying material properties and their technological applications will be vital to thedevelopmentoffuturetechnologicalinnovationsinthefollowingrelevantindustriesandresearchareas:i. NanoscienceandNanotechnology;ii. InformationandMagneticStorage;iii. PhotonicsandOptoelectronics;iv. BiomedicalmaterialsandBiotechnology;v. SemiconductorandOrganicElectronics;vi. QuantumInformationTechnology.

    ProgrammeStructure&CurriculumRationale

    TheMaterialsScienceandEngineering(MSE)programmeisbuiltonthesolidfoundationofthebasicsciences(inthefirstyear)inwhichPhysics isoneof themaincomponents.Students from theMSEprogrammewill thusbenefit from thisdoubledegreeprogrammebybeingabletodelvedeeperandbroaderintothePhysicsdisciplines.Similarly,studentswithPhysicsbackgroundwillbenefitimmenselyfromtheEngineeringapplications,designandtechnologicalcomponentstheMSEprogrammehastooffer(seeTables1and2).Auniquefeatureof thisdoubledegreeprogramme is the integratedB.Eng./B.Sc. (Hons.)dissertation/Honoursprojectwhere studentswillbejointlysupervisedbybothMSEandPhysicsstaffmembersandtheareasofresearchwillbeattheinterfaceofthesetwodisciplines.Theprogrammestructurewillallowstudentstoacquireknowledgethroughunderstandingtheinterfacebetweenthetwomajorleadingfields.GraduateswillacquireacomprehensiveknowledgeofPhysicsanda thorough insight into thecurrentEngineeringpracticesofnewtechnologies.ThedoubledegreeprogrammewillacceptstudentseitherthroughtheFacultyofScience (Physicstrack)ortheFacultyofEngineering(MSEtrack).ScienceorEngineeringstudentsareencouragedtoapplyforpreadmissionintotheprogrammeatthebeginningofthefirstsemesterofYearOne in their respective faculties. Selectedpreadmitted students are advised to follow the suggested studyplanprovided (seeTables3and4).Theywillbeconfirmedintothedoubledegreeprogrammeaftersatisfactoryperformanceintheirfirstyear.ThedoubledegreeprogrammewilladmitadditionalsuitablestudentsatthebeginningoftheirsecondyearfromtheFacultiesofScience(Physicstrack)orEngineering(MSEandCommonEngineering).CareerProspects
