DS The idea of my Design Context Publication is to show people the kind

of design I am interested in and why. I plan to find a range of logo’s that interest me, a range of typefaces that I think are great, and a range of

really high end print with some clever uses of print processes. The key word here is clever. I want to find design that has that unique selling point that makes it stand out from the rest of the design out there.

DS The questions that I am asking with this brief, are what is unique

design. I am looking for the unique point about a piece of designt that makes the user think its clever and the designer wish they had done it. Focusing on the key areas that I am looking at for this FMP keeps it

consistent with my practice and that makes it useful to me.

Questions

Page 3: DCP presentation

DS The research will be a process of sending out emails, or talking over

the phone to designers. Hopefully this will be the initial processes, but for local studio’s visits might be appropriate, and this will help me to get my foot in the door so to speak. For designers and studio’s not in

the UK then email and telephone will have to suffice.

Research

Page 4: DCP presentation

DS The content for the publication will be a selection of 20 logo’s 10

typefaces and 20 high-end bits of print. Each book will have its own branding, but the books will work as a set. Initial idea’s for this so far are:

create a belly band that unites the three books / box the three books together / or a type of folder that holds the three together cleverly.

Content

Page 5: DCP presentation

DS The first book will be about branding. I have begun gathering logos that

I feel are clever and unique in some way. I have also got the websites of the people/studios. As part of my research I will send out emails with a set of questions about the work. Then in the publication each piece of

work will be accompanied by an interview from the designer/studio. If each designer gets a full spread, thats 40 pages, plus other pages it will be around 48 pages.

First book - branding

DS The second book will be about typography. Looking at new typefaces

that are free and available to the public. I think this will be interesting because my dissertation involves a lot of type and classic typefaces. As with the branding book, I will contact the designers of the typefaces

and interview them about the designs. Each design will have a full page spread, so this will be the smallest book at around 28 pages.

Second book - typography

DS The third book will be looking in to high quality print with a focus on

print processes. Looking at good designs that have been made great with the use of foiling, folding, spot varnish, duplexing etc. The main goal of this is to further my knowledge of these processes so that I can

use them all more in my work.

Third book - print

Page 8: DCP presentation

DS Within each book there will be sub-chapters, they will depend on the

book and the content in the book, but there will be a system which decides what goes where, and what is grouped with what. For example, all of the logo’s in the first book will be organised by date, starting with

the earliest first. This information will be one of the questions that the designers/studios will be asked.

Sub-chapters

Page 9: DCP presentation

DS Included in each book will be an introduction to each one. This will also

have a contents page and some information from me. The information will be things like introduction to each project, and then the interviews. At the back there will be any additional information about designs,

and a closing statement. Each book will have a link to my dissertation for example in the typography book I will try and provoke thought about some of the designs.
