Dr Cordell directs and undertakes international and Australian research projects on sustainable food and phosphorus futures. She has worked on collaborative projects with partners in Australia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, India, Malawi, Sweden and the U.S., many of which involve high-level stakeholder engagement to improve the policy relevance, impact and foster mutual-learning. The collaborative P-FUTURES project (http://www.p-futurescities.net) which Dr Cordell co-leads aims to identify how urban food systems can cope or transform in response to the emerging global phosphorus challenge, together with 90 local stakeholder partners across Australia, Vietnam, Malawi and the U.S. In 2008 Dr Cordell co-founded the Global Phosphorus Research Initiative (http://phosphorusfutures.net) – the first global platform to undertake research, policy and public engagement to ensure food systems are resilient to the emerging global challenge of phosphorus scarcity. Dr Cordell currently leads the Sydney’s Food Futures project (http://www.sydneyfoodfutures.net), which brings together key stakeholders such as NSW Department of Primary Industries, NSW Farmers, Department of Planning and RDA-Sydney to increase the resilience of Sydney’s food system to global and local challenges (from climate change to urban growth) through participatory stakeholder workshops and geospatial mapping scenarios. As a global food and phosphorus security expert, Dr Cordell provides expert advice and commentary to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Australia’s Chief Scientist, European Commission (DG Environment), UK Parliament and peak industry bodies including the Australia Institute for Health and Welfare. She is a member of UNEP’s Phosphorus Task Team as part of the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management, and most recently joined UNEP’s Global Environment Outlook team as a global food security contributor. In Australia, Dr Cordell was invited by the Chief Scientist to sit on the Expert Working Group to determine the top research priorities related to ‘Managing our Food & Water assets’ in 2013. Dr Dana Cordell is a Research Director at the Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology Sydney (UTS) where she leads the Food Futures research area. Dr Cordell has published widely, including 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters in the last 7 years. Her 2009 article in Elsevier’s Global Environmental Change has attracted over 2060 citations and it became the journal’s most cited article during a 5 year period.

In addition to her leading edge research on sustainable phosphorus futures, Dana also has 16 years of sustainability research experience leading and undertaking interdisciplinary sustainable water, sanitation, food and waste management projects. Drawing from transdisciplinary research frameworks, Dana is committed to undertaking leading-edge research designed to create change towards sustainable futures.

In addition to the Institute for Sustainable Futures at UTS, Dr Cordell has held positions in Sweden, at Linkoping University and the Stockholm Environment Institute, where she was a core member of an competitive international consortium of researchers on the Sustainable Use of Phosphorus project for the European Commission (D.G. Environment). Dr Cordell has also worked for indigenous rural appropriate technology Not-for-profits in Nepal (with the Himalayan Light Foundation), in Far North Queensland (with the Centre for Appropriate Technology) and developing renewable energy technology communication resources for a key environmental NGO in East Timor through the Australian Conservation Foundation.
