You ask the Senior questionWe find the Savvy answer
How to compare Medicare prescription drug plans
Dear Savvy Senior,Is it important to compare Medicare Part D prescrip-
tion drug plans every year? My pharmacist recom-mends it, but it’s such a hassle sorting through all thosedifferent plans. What can you tell me?
Confused Beneficiary
Dear Confused,Because all Medicare Part D prescription drug plans can
change their costs and coverage each calendar year, com-paring plans every year during the open enrollment period(which is Oct. 15 – Dec. 7) is still the best way to ensureyou don’t miss out on your best deal for 2013, especially ifyou take a lot of medications.
Here are a few tips and resources that can help youcompare plans with the least amount of hassle.
Online ToolIf you’re comfortable using a computer, you can easily
compare Medicare’s drug plans yourself online. Just go toMedicare’s Plan Finder Tool at www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan, and type in your zip code or your personal informa-tion, the drugs you take and their dosages, and select thepharmacies you use and you’ll get a cost comparisonbreakdown for each plan available in your area.
This tool also provides a five-star rating system thatevaluates each plan based on past customer servicerecords, and suggests generics or older brand name drugsthat can reduce your costs.
It’s also important to keep in mind that when you’recomparing drug plans don’t judge a plan strictly by itsmonthly premium cost. Low-premium plans are often asso-ciated with higher prescription co-payments and may endup being more expensive. Look at the “estimated annualdrug costs” that shows how much you can expect to payover a year in total out-of-pocket costs – including premi-ums, deductibles and co-pays.
Also, be sure the plan you’re considering covers all ofthe drugs you take with no restrictions. Some plans mayrequire you to get permission or try a number of cheaperdrugs before they will cover certain prescriptions.
Get HelpIf you need some help with this or if you don’t have
Internet access to compare the plans yourself, ask yourkids, grandkids or a trusted computer-savvy friend to helpyou, or you can call Medicare at 800-633-4227 and a cus-tomer service representative will do it for you over thephone for free.
Another resource that you can call on for help is yourState Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), whichprovides free one-on-one Medicare counseling in person orover the phone. They also conduct seminars during theopen enrollment period at various locations throughouteach state. To find the contact information for your localSHIP visit shiptalk.org, or call the eldercare locator at 800-677-1116.
Smaller Donut HoleYou also need to know that Medicare’s “donut-hole”
coverage gap will shrink a little more next year. In 2013,Medicare Part D beneficiaries that hit the coverage gap willreceive a 52.5 percent discounts on brand-name drugs, and a 21 percent discount on generic medications.
For 2013, the coverage gap begins when your total drugcost exceeds $2,970 (that includes your share and theinsurer’s share of the costs) and ends when combinedspending is $6,733. After that, your Part D plan usually cov-ers around 95 percent of your remaining drug costs for theyear.
Low Income AssistanceAlso, be aware that if you’re a low-income beneficiary
and your annual income is under $16,755 or $22,695 formarried couples living together, and your assets are below$13,070 or $26,120 for married couples, you may be eligi-ble for the federal Low Income Subsidy known as “ExtraHelp” that pays Part D premiums, deductibles and copay-ments. For more information or to apply, call SocialSecurity at 800-772-1213 or visit socialsecurity.gov/pre-scriptionhelp.
Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. JimMiller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of“The Savvy Senior” book.

Johnny Cash guitarist Bob Wooten returns to Kasson October 12
Bob Wooten looks, talks and sings likeJohnny Cash. For 30 years Wooten playedguitar for Cash and to this day continues hislegacy with performances that replicate aJohnny Cash concert. In fact, Wooten is quickto say, “How do you know he wasn’t per-forming and impersonating me?,” saidWooten in a phone interview last week fromhis Nashville home.
Bob Wooten, Johnny Cash’s legendaryguitarist, will be performing along with SixMile Grove Friday, October 12 at The Eventsin Kasson. Doors open for the show at 6:30p.m. and music begins at 7:30 p.m. Generaladmission seating tickets can be purchased atDaniel’s Restaurant in Kasson, KassonHardware Hank or online at: www.sixmilegrove.com.
Bob Wooten played lead guitar for JohnnyCash from 1968-1998. At one of Cash’sshows a flight cancellation left only Cashand drummer W.S. Holland on stage. Wootenwas asked to fill in during the delay and thatwas the beginning of a long musical and per-sonal relationship with the legendary countrywestern singer. Wooten said he and Johnnywere like family.
Back in the 50’s Wooten worked in adepartment store stocking shelves. Music wasalways playing and this strange, deep voiceBob kept hearing caught his attention. Thatvoice was Johnny Cash’s. “I bought 12 of hisalbums before I even had a record player,”said Wooten. “Whenever a new album cameout I bought it.”
Wooten described Johnny Cash as an ordi-nary guy. “He was a man’s man,” saidWooten. “A handshake and he was yourfriend.” After one concert the Statler Brothersgave Johnny a hug and Wooten said, “He wasnot real comfortable with that.”
What anyone might have heard at a JohnnyCash concert they are going to hear at aGuaranteed Cash concert. “It’s the same
songs and that’s what people want to hear,”said Wooten. “Folsom Prison Blues, Ring ofFire, that’s what people want.” One ofWooten’s most memorable performances wasat San Quentin State Prison where Cash’s livealbum was recorded.
Bob Wooten returned to the stage for thefirst time since playing with Cash in January2004. He appeared with the band Six MileGrove. Since then he has toured in the mid-west with Six Mile Grove several times. Hehas also toured across the country and inEurope with his family band that includes hiswife and daughters.
Six Mile Grove is an Americana band thathas toured across the United States and per-formed with The Kentucky Headhunters,Nitty Gritty Dirt band and Geardaddies. BobWooten describes them as a class group ofmusicians who complement GuaranteedCash.
Bob Wooten will be performing at TheEvents in Kasson Friday, October 12along with Six Mile Grove. Bob performedas the lead guitarist for Cash from 1969-98. Photo from http://www.ci.maplewood.mn.us.

TIME WINTERIZING AT BROMLEY REPAIRTIME WINTERIZING AT BROMLEY REPAIRDrive past Bromley Repair in Mantorville along
#57, across from the former school, and it's not verydifficult to determine the season. Gary Bromley is atit full time winterizing boats.
Last week Gary winterized close to 40 boats andbefore he is done will have done over 100 for themonth. It might seem a little early for winterizing, butBromley points out that it is critical to get it donebefore the cold settles in, especially with outboardengines. Given what outboard engines cost for a majorrepair, having someone like Gary Bromley do the win-terizing is a small price to pay.
Gary works on inboard and outboard motors andhas also worked on what could be classified as antiqueboats. As long as the parts are available Gary does not
mind working on the older boats.Gary Bromley is the type of person who dives into
a boat motor problem, not knowing what is wrong, andenjoys the challenge. His patience usually pays off. In14 years of business Gary has run into about everyproblem imaginable. If he can't fix something it prob-ably can't be repaired.
Gary has the same philosophy when fixing a snow-mobile. Before long the scenery will change atBromley Repair and he will be working on snowmo-biles for customers who want their machines ready togo when the first snow flies.
Gary also does general automotive and light truckrepair. He draws customers from a large area becauseof some of the specialty work he is able to do withboats and snowmobiles. Customers feel confident witha good mechanic just as they would for a family physi-cian or preferred dentist. Gary has developed a repu-tation over the last 14 years for being dependable andcharging a fair price.
Prior to starting his own business Gary worked atMcNeilus 15 years and the last two at Crenlo beforeleaving the security of a guaranteed paycheck to start-ing his own business. There are those days of regrets inowning a business, but for the most part Gary likesbeing his own boss and to this day likes the idea ofbeing a one man shop.
You can't miss his business. Just look for the boatslined up along his building. It won't be long thoughbefore the boats are replaced withsnowmobiles.
For more information contact Bromley Repair at(507)635-5000.
Gary Bromley works on winterizing aninboard motor. Winterizing an inboard is criticalin the fall, especially before freezing tempera-tures hit.
Boats line the side of Bromley Repair, ready to bepicked up after being winterized.

Q: Although the loon is a bird, it differs from song-birds and waterfowl. How?
A: The bones of most birds are hollow and light in orderto maximize the efficiency of flight; loons, however, adaptedto life in the water, have several large solid bones that makediving easier but flying more difficult. This extra weightenables them to dive deep – in excess of 100 feet – to searchfor food. Once underwater, loons can remain there for sever-al minutes. Even though loons are capable of diving deepand for long periods, most dives are shallower and shorter.Because their bodies are heavy relative to their wing size, loons need a runway of 60 or more feet in order to take offfrom a lake. When airborne loons can fly more than 75 milesper hour. Another unique characteristic of a loon is its legs. These extremities are set far back on its body, which means aloon cannot walk like other birds. If on dry land, a loon mustpush itself along on its chest.
