A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD
Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that I have had the opportunity to serve as Board President for
Development Centers over the past year. Sitting on the Board of a nonprofit is truly an
experience that everyone should have and that I highly recommend. It’s a snapshot into
the work of so many dedicated people who share a common vision and mission - a diverse
group of people coming together to help others. It’s more than a job and those who
commit themselves to helping others are more than just “employees” – they are agents of
change in the lives of those we serve.
This past year, I have been repeatedly impressed by the great work that Development
Centers is doing in service of our community. Our dedication is further demonstrated in that
we are never satisfied with status quo and are continuously looking for ways to improve our
services and further expand our reach into the community. For example this past year we
dove deeper into integrated care and grew our footprint in school-based mental health
services by adding additional schools to our service locations. We also expanded our
partnerships to provide greater food and nutrition services to our client families, especially
those with young children. I am proud of our commitment to the
concept that if there’s a need we don’t currently meet, that we
seek out and welcome partnerships with those who do! I
continue to feel fortunate to have a role that empowers our
dedicated staff in strengthening and expanding our services. I
look forward to what I’m sure will be yet another exciting year.
Sincerely,
Rodger Prong

A LETTER FROM OUR CEO
Dear Friends,
What a year it was! I am honored to have been welcomed as Development Centers new
CEO. Although Development Centers has been my “home” since 1983, I am excited to be in
this new role and help lead the vision for the agency over the next several years. As I reflect
upon the past 35 years of services, I think about how Development Centers has evolved into
a comprehensive human service agency that provides holistic services to children, adults
and families. Over the past year, we reached milestones related to the opening of our on-
site Wellness Center, expanded our school-based treatment program, and flawlessly
received our three-year CARF accreditation (yeah!). The question is, “where do we go from
here?”
Over this next year, we hope to continue to transform our services to meet the needs of the
“whole person” and their family. This means expansion of employment services, more
integrated healthcare of children, adults and families and improved partnerships with other
stakeholders and communities.
As you review this report and read of the success of individuals we served, I encourage you
to think about how each person was faced with a mental health challenge, struggled in
recovery or worked to improve their skills and abilities. I want to thank our dedicated staff,
Board Members, volunteers and supporters for their commitment to compassionately serving
all of those who come through our doors, no matter the program. Thank
you also to our former CEO, Robert Shaw for his long-standing work to
build an agency that is so passionate about helping others. Development
Centers is successful because of the efforts of so many and we achieve
small steps every day.
Thank you for being part of our journey.
Catherine L. Liesman, Ph.D

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
North Central Health Center – Integrated Health Care Program
Success Story
MARSHALL has been receiving services
since 2004 at Development Centers –
North Central Health Center within our
Integrated Health Care Program. He
stated that he has always had “good care
at NCHC for mental health, physical health
or dental services”.
With the support of NCHC, Marshall
currently attends Wayne County
Community College-District where he is
studying automotive technology.
He proudly reports that he earned a place
on the Dean’s list. Marshall shared that his
goals are to learn new skills, get a job and
to take care of his family. One day
Marshall hopes to be a teacher, and he
credits the staff at Development Centers
with his stability and motivation to pursue
his dreams.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
Detroit Hope Clubhouse – Transitional Employment (TE) Program
Success Stories
DAN has been a member of the Detroit
Hope Clubhouse for the past year and was
recently employed in the Transitional
Employment (TE) Program as an auto
detailer on September 1, 2018. The TE
Program has impacted Dan’s life in many
ways. He said, “The TE Program has made
me a better person and more disciplined
in getting my work done. It has also given
me extra money that I can use when I am
in need of something.” Dan has been
loving his experience as an auto detailer in
the TE Program and hopes that this
discipline he has learned can help him get
a job in security or as a cashier.
MARK is also an employee in the TE
Program working as an auto detailer. He
was hired in August 2018 and has been
enjoying every second of it. The TE program
also gives Mark a sense of pride that he is
earning money on his own and helping
others. Overall, Mark thinks that the TE
Program has taught him basic job skills that
he can use in the future when looking for a
job.

EARLY CHILDHOOD
Early Childhood and Family Services Division – Infant Mental Health (IMH) Program
Success Story
LAURA, an adult consumer with 3 young
children, has been involved with Infant
Mental Health (IMH) for over 1 year. Laura
has maintained weekly appointments with
overwhelming regularity, has engaged
with other Development Centers
programs, and delivered a healthy baby
boy.
With the support of IMH, Laura and her
infant son have developed a beautiful
bond and secure attachment despite
many stressors and concrete needs. Her
son is flourishing and she lights up around
him and delights in him.
The family will soon move into their own
home, and Laura has reported feeling like
she can finally breathe again. IMH services
remain in place to support all of her
children and relationships, and to support
the family's continued progress while in
their new home.
