GA and the DCDB Digital Cadastre Data is utilised as a valued reference

source across many project areas within Geoscience Australia. However, GA is neither a creator or maintainer of digital cadastre.

Digital cadastre data is sourced from the States & Territories, and PSMA’s national dataset.

Two GA project activities using the DCDB in different ways…

The DCDB and Topographic Information

The National Geographic Information Group (NGIG) utilises the DCDB as a valued contextual reference source in the gathering of topographic information. For example, the DCDB viewed over imagery provides context in such areas as…

• Recent land sub-division a pointer of new development and associated infrastructure activities

• Roads falling within road easements an indication of public versus private road

• Positioning of high voltage electricity transmission lines along easements

• Land tenure indication of land use

• Alignment of boundaries eg National Parks, Reserves, Fence lines

National Topographic Initiative Commonwealth/State Collaboration

• Capture once, use many – sharing of information between State/Territory jurisdictions

• Enhanced positional accuracy and greater number of attributes stored in GA’s topographic database

• Different topographic specifications used across jurisdictions

Cadastre assists in acquiring greater level of accuracy and attribute information when working with other data sources as part of topographic revision

Cadastre and the National Exposure Information System (NEXIS)

NEXIS Project Description…..

NEXIS is being developed to provide consistent exposure information to support regional and national risk assessments of buildings and infrastructure to natural hazards.

NEXIS was created in response to COAG reform Commitment 2 – “establish a nationally consistent system of data collection, research and analysis to ensure a sound knowledge base on natural disasters and disaster mitigation”, Geoscience Australia’s (GA’s) Risk & Impact Analysis Group is working on the development of the NEXIS.

The DCDB is critically important for the part it plays in the NEXIS Project.

Conclusion: Cadastre is a valued reference source, supporting informed decision making across a number of GA project activities, which in turn allows for informed decision making by Government and non-Government alike in such areas as infrastructure, resource & emergency management.
