CIMS(Ceramax Integrated MeasuringSystem)
The CompanySince 1953, Rexroth HydraudyneB.V. has been gaining expertise inthe sale, design and manufacture ofengineered to order hydrauliccylinders. Piston diameters rangeup to 1,450 mm and stroke lengthscan be as long as 45,000 mm.
We are a solid basis for a business partnership.Bosch Rexroth is a group ofcompanies specializing in the fieldof drive and control technology, with locations in all importantindustrial areas in more than 80countries. The Bosch RexrothHydro Cylinder range is unique inthe world thanks to the productscope, and the geographical distri-bution of both production andsales locations. Cylinder produc-tion facilities for standardcylinders, tie-rod and mill type upto 320 mm bore and 3 meter strokeare located in Germany, Sweden,Brazil, the United States andChina. The larger bore andstroke cylinders as wellas the ABS andspecial cylinders areproduced for theworld market inthe Netherlands.
IntroductionExtremely high demands are often placed on the continuous use ofhydraulic cylinders, commonly in extreme ambient conditions. These cylinders are often employed in capitalgoods such as continuous castingmachines in heavy industry, dredging vessels, offshore platforms, ship loadingand unloading systems, tunnelingmachines, as well as bridges and sluices. Against this background the market demands extremely durable products, fully capable to with stand corrosive and abrasive conditions.
Ceramax Engineered Coatings(CEC), the basis for CIMS With its revolutionary CeramaxEngineered Coatings, RexrothHydraudyne developed a newinternationally recognized range of piston rod coatings. Everycylinder in its specific applicationcan have its own optimizedengineered cylinder rod coating, created for special circumstancesand applications.
Each layer is applied with advancedprocesses like plasma spraying andHVOF spraying. Several differentmixes of ceramic or metal matrixmaterials can be applied, depending on requirements forwear, corrosion and service life.
CEC can be applied to both ourBosch Rexroth standard cylinderranges CDL (light), CDM(medium), and CDH (heavy) aswell as ABS or Application BasedStandardizationcylinders.
Use of one ofthe CEC rod
coatings is a prerequi-site for any application

CIMS MKII Operation principal A magnetic field is created andshaped between a permanentmagnet and a grooved piston rod, covered with Ceramax coating. Two half bridged magneto-resistiveelements, located in this magneticfield, produce sine and cosinesignals which are the input for atracking phase resolver. Theoutputs of this resolver are quadra-ture incremental counting pulses. For long distance transmissionthese pulses are converted toRS422A differential output pulses. With appropriate cabling, shielding, impedance and countingequipment, the result is a simple, high quality, accurate and reliabledisplacement measuring system.
Implementation CIMS MKII cylinders can easily be implemented in customercontrols. The RS422A differentialcounting pulses are protectedagainst and insensitive to electricalnoise. The pulses can be acceptedby a variety of counters with differential line receivers.
CIMS MKII in combination withthese devices can be used for:
– Control of position
– Read-out of position
– Safeguarding / limiting of position
– Triggering of external actions

Mechanical Lay OutThe CIMS MKII sensor and electronics are integrated in the cylinder head in a solid stainless steel housingoutside the high pressure zone. They are fully protected against all environmental impacts. This construction alsoensures easy serviceability and the possibility of offering redundant measurement solutions.
A variety of electro-mechanical cable outputs from a high performance IP67 connector up to IP68 high pressureprotection is available. Also a certified EEx-version of CIMS MKII system is optional.

CIMS MKII offers fully digitalsignals for direct digital operationwithout any loss of accuracy andneed for calibration. For lessdemanding applications conver-sion to analogue current or voltageis possible. This will add anadditional inaccuracy of approxi-mately 0.2% full stroke.
CIMS MKII is the solution for all applications– Heavy Industry
– Offshore, Marine, Dredging
– Civil Engineering
– Mining and Material Handling
– Presses
– Servo/Simulation
Advantages– Unlimited stroke length– Basic accuracy better than 1 mm
for all stroke length– No calibration needed
(1024 pulses/10 mm)– Data transmission over hundreds
of meters (RS422A)– Standard incremental counting
pulses (quadrature)– Easy interfacing to customer
electronics for measuring,safeguarding and control
– Explosion safe (EEx) optional– Redundancy solutions possible– Stainless steel housing (IP68)– Easy serviceability without
oil spillage– All fragile parts protected against
