Be inventive. When details are unusual, even subtly unusual, that’s exciting.

“The kitchen is part of the décor of the overall home now. The details, the choices you

make for it tell the story of what you love. Get excited about materials, and blend them

in interesting ways. Consider open shelving, not just for pots and plates but for pottery

and other statement pieces. Bring in artwork. Embrace clean lines, but make it dramatic.

Details can be simple but sophisticated and surprising, too.”

“The new Jenn-Air® Accolade Downdraft Ventilation

System’s elegant curve and fl uid movement create a

visual masterpiece. It’s sleek and quiet, yet powerful.”

“Consider mixing diverse

materials on an island to

defi ne separate spaces.”

“Open shelving can bring

other elements of your

home into the kitchen.”

EDITOR’S LETTER

While recently browsing

an antique shop in Flat

Rock, North Carolina,

I picked up an issue of

Arts & Decoration magazine, circa March

1927. Charmed by its vintage photographs

and retro appeal, I took it home to study

its content. What insightful words of

design wisdom I discovered in its pages.

A few to take note of, and for us design

devotees to keep in mind...

On Gardens: “Gardens, like everything else in the world, should be

made with imagination as well as knowledge. ere must seem leisure

in the loveliness—and permanency. In short, beauty of a garden lies in

looking lived in, by dreams at least.”

On Room Composition: “It is one thing to be able to make up a

pretty color scheme and quite a different matter to bring all the diverse

elements of a room together in such fashion as to make a beautiful

composition. People live in these compositions; move about in them.

erefore, they must of necessity be as sound in their structural

composition as a group of sculpture and as lovely in their color choice

and arrangement as is the work of the painter upon canvas.”

On Architecture: “As American dwellings are built better, more

This season, Alexandria’s Lee Design & Interiors expands its inventory of luxury architectural fittings and unique treasures with the introduction of Waterworks’ celebrated selection of kitchen and bath hardware and Christopher Guy’s iconic furnishings. “While completely different in scope, both companies are design powerhouses,” says Vice President Joshua Lee, “and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring them into the showroom.” Shown here, the Obsidian chandelier from Viz Glass is just a glimpse of the tony offerings that are currently available. leedesignandinteriors.com

Since its September opening, Nest 301 has infused the North Bethesda Market with a healthy dose of luxury style. Conceived by local designer Steve Corbeille and his longtime client Mauro Gibellini, the posh shop presents a captivating register of brands to the public that are usually only accessible to design professionals. “Our idea was to create a store that transcends the lines between the retail world and the interior designer’s domain,” says Corbeille. Host to an exquisite array of lighting, furnishings, textiles and artwork—from local, national and international talent—Nest 301 also offers personalized decorating services. nest301.com

What inspired you to begin a career in design?I have always been captivated by architecture, art and design; there was nothing else I could have done professionally that would have fulfilled me the way working as an interior designer does.

How has traveling helped shape your design aesthetic?I have always loved antiquing and buying unique pieces on trips abroad. From Brazil to Maine, my travels are a major source of inspiration.

Who are some of your personal design icons?Frances Elkins for her exquisite taste for classic, timeless and livable beauty, and Bunny Williams for the artfully curated yet balanced spaces she creates.

What influences you on a daily basis? The collaborative fashion in which I work has created friendships between many of my clients and myself; these unexpected relationships inspire me each day.

According to Alexandria-based interior designer Stuart Nordin, opening her eponymous boutique was a lifelong dream. Since stumbling upon the space—which happened to be down the street from the house she grew up in—just one year ago, she has cultivated a charming collection of distinct curiosities, local art and accents from a wide range of exclusive brands. This fall, Nordin says she is looking forward to introducing Sferra Linens to her stylish repertoire as well as the latest décor from Bunny Williams’ BeeLine Home collection. stuartnordin.com

true story^Pompanoosuc Mills’ Alexandria outpost provides enduring inspiration to the Washington, D.C., design realm. The family-run company—which has been creating solid hardwood and upholstered furniture in its Vermont workshop for over 40 years—recently released a brilliant assemblage of interior elements that reflect its storied heritage. “Over the years we’ve cultivated an incredible set of timeless designs,” notes showroom manager Robert Wilhite. “We’ve also developed an unparalleled experience creating items that solve a myriad of spatial challenges in the home and office.” Offering fully customizable options in materials like reclaimed redwood, bird’s-eye maple and quilted walnut, “each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.” pompy.com

The raw quality and natural allure of Machu Picchu inspired designer Jiun Ho to create his latest furniture collection entitled Jiun Ho IV, a collaborative effort with Peruvian-born textile designer Sandra Jordan. Part of the new line is the Chinchero bench, shown, enveloped in Jordan’s olive-hued Prima Alpaca fabric—a luxurious fiber that was historically implemented by Incan royalty and evokes the ancient heritage of the Andean culture. According to Ho, the bench, which is bestowed with a framework of robust steel, “reflects the magical essence of the royal estate built with eternity in mind.” jiunhodejia.com

Situated in the historic neighborhood of Old Town Alexandria, Victoria at Home is a boutique-style haven for classic furnishings, exclusive accessories and original art. Born from the creative vision of interior designer Victoria Sanchez, the shop is bursting with a unique array of distinctive pieces from nationally acclaimed brands the likes of Vanguard Furniture and Hickory White, as well as regional companies such as Richmond-based Dana Gibson. “I’ve always loved collecting artwork and antiques,” notes Sanchez, who is in the midst of fabricating her own line of pillows and textiles embellished with vintage trims. “My vision for the store was to offer items that I personally would use to design my dream house.” victoriasanchezinteriors.com

DREAM WORLD^

COLOR CORRECTEDItalian design house Poltrona Frau recently unveiled 11 new sumptuously appointed furniture lines, all of which were inspired by the rich history of luxury automobile and aviation models. Roberto Lazzeroni’s Montera chair is a two-tone design—shown here in camel and turquoise leathers—set atop a rich wenge-stained ash wood base. Available in a vibrant amalgam of colorways, Montera embodies a sophisticated silhouette, which Lazzeroni achieved via an ardent focus on lightness of form. poltronafrau.com

For Falls Church native Kelly Thompson, the design maven behind Pearson Square’s Stylish Patina, the skill of successfully blending vintage and modern furnishings comes second nature yet her concept for the shop was four years in the making. “When working with the old and new, it’s about striking that perfect balance,” says Thompson, who also offers interior design and event styling services. With a focus on “clean lines and thoughtfully edited vignettes,” Thompson’s ideal setting is “refined, beautiful and bestowed with meaning.” stylishpatina.com

“I find that many of my clients are attracted to the idea of

using color but are fearful in applying it,” Boyd says. “Tabletop

is a great way to have fun and experiment with interesting

combinations.” e designer chose Anna Weatherley’s gold-

rimmed charger for its amethyst color and her scalloped

white dinner plate for its bright note; the hand-painted Jaune

de Chrome dessert dish serves as a complement to both,

and the leopard-print Norbar fabric neutralizes the color

scheme. Boyd layered Rogaska crystal throughout the smoky purple dining room

and added delicate Hermès flatware as jewelry for the table—a play on the literal

reference she made with an agate bracelet as a napkin ring. Alongside the fireplace,

they make an inviting space even cozier in time for a fabulous fall get together.

So many modern artists expressed their world through their experience of the street and the changes they

were observing in the urban fabric. The modern metropolis was the central symbolic site of modernity.

Léger: Modern Art and The Metropolis—the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition on the metropolis

and the exchanges of influence between Fernand Léger and the artists, architects, filmmakers and poets

of the 1920s international avant-garde in Paris—makes its debut this fall. Running from October through January, the

exhibition was inspired by e City (shown here), a formative work in 20th-century art, and one of the core masterpieces

in the museum’s collection. “We wanted to focus on the metropolis to show how current modern art’s engagement with the world can be for today’s

city dwellers,” notes exhibit curator Anna Vallye. “What’s so remarkable is that the city Léger painted almost 100 years ago is still completely familiar

to us today. Of course, cities have changed since then, but there is also something profoundly enduring about Léger’s vision.” philamuseum.org

IN YOUR NEW BOOK, AN

INVITATION TO CHÂTEAU DU

GRAND-LUCÉ... Many people think that classic design is outdated and uncomfortable and I wanted to show that nothing could be further from the truth. Design is a pendulum and while it swings from trend to trend, it always returns to the classical because there is an innate sense of security in it. It is more forgiving, as it accepts that daily accoutrements are a part of our living spaces.

YOUR APPROACH TO DESIGN: None of what I do is too studied. I think a flea market treasure can be mixed in with an 18th-century console and you get to appreciate each of them more because of their relationship to one another. Who wants to live in a room that whispers, “Look, but don’t touch?”

WHY UNDERTAKE SUCH A

PAINSTAKING RESTORATION? I love the secrets that you find in the stones of old buildings and the challenge of taking something that was designed for a different way of life and subtly transforming it for the way we live today.

FURNISHING THE CHATEAU…

Was a real labor of love and I used an approach that I would advise anyone to: Buy what you love and it will somehow find its proper place.

CALIFORNIA VS. FRANCE: For me, Southern California is all about comfort, casual living and self- expression, but there is just something about the French respect for culture, history and tradition that really resonates with me.

WHEN ENTERTAINING GUESTS…

It is important to make them feel as if they are in their own home. I always leave flowers, freshly baked goodies, magazines or books I think they will enjoy and a scented candle in their room to welcome them.

MOST FAVORED

ARCHITECTURAL

PERIOD: Mid-to-late 18th-century France was such a remarkable time for architecture, because it held the highest level of refinement of the French aesthetic, but it was tempered by the age of enlightenment.

black list

Black is often a regular on the fashion scene,

and this year is no exception as the no-nonsense

hue is fiercely represented on and off the

runway. Color takes a back seat, while edgy

silhouettes and sharp architectural frames—

echoed within designer Vera Wang’s structural

fall 2013 RTW collection—take center stage in

home accents and fashion accessories. Black’s

sleek persona continues to evolve, and this time

around, it’s seriously amped up, punctuated

with rich golds and brass finishes.

on the hunt

Conjuring a woodsy, outdoor sensibility, hunter

green has manifested into the neutral tone this

fall. Projecting a masculine air, the inky-green

hue marked its territory this season, effort-

lessly migrating from high-fashion threads to

luxury décor. The powerful shade coyly made

its way into Marc Jacobs’ fall 2013 line, and

has morphed into becoming the sartorial shade

du jour. With the interiors world bewitched

by its boldness and the fashion devout falling

for its luster, hunter green has emerged as

the venerable go-to color.

A color known for its regal reputation and

ability to play well with others, it comes as

no surprise that purple has captured the

attention of both the fashion and design

amethyst, these sumptuous tones have deeply

imbued the latest home collections met only

by their sultry fashion counterparts, depicted

When designer Cédric Ragot conceives an interior accent, such as this

ombré rug he created for French atelier Roche Bobois, he perpetually

aims to conjure a link between the functional and the conceptual.

“Ponyo was actually one of my first forays into the art of rug design,”

says Ragot, adding that he “endeavored to invite a harmonious blend

of tones, which in turn, serve to warm up a room.” Featured here in

a raspberry-centric scheme, the artfully devised floorcovering is hand-

woven from sumptuous New Zealand wool.

is season, Kyle Bunting’s effervescent hide-on-hair pattern work

collides with South Florida design studio Britto Charette’s penchant

for Art Deco architecture. e result is this hourglass stool, which

marks the duo’s first venture into the home accessories arena. “I

like this piece as a single side table, but it works best when used

in multiples,” says Bunting. “e juxtaposition of the warm and

tactile hide against the opaque base’s smooth silhouette is nearly

the perfect combination of materials and surfaces.”

+ To create the Sorenthia light fixture,

Rhode Island-based designer Asher

Dunn turned to the marvels of the ocean

to find his muse. “I was intrigued by the

crystalline nature of sea kelp when seen

below the surface of water,” says Dunn,

who took a cue from the arresting quality of

light shining through the plant. Merging

this organic component—by virtue of

adjustable arms—with an industrial blend

of steel and brass, Dunn introduces a

luminous product destined to shine.

“This fixture is very light and open yet geometric in nature. The brass detailing is sophisticated and chic; definitely the type of statement piece I would install in my living room.”JE

Set in Georgetown on Wisconsin Avenue, this quaint boutique is home to beautiful table linens, flatware, fine stemware and serving accoutrements galore. 1 AGE-OLD STORY From its prestigious 16th Street address to the 96 exquisitely clad luxury rooms, The Jefferson hotel is steeped in rich D.C. history. Personifying an air of grace and sophistication, The Jefferson—named after Thomas Jefferson—is a Beaux Arts building originally designed by French architect Jules Henri de Sibour. ROBUST TASTE A rather unlikely restaurant now resides in Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown neighborhood with the South American-infused Del Campo. Dreamed to life by chef Victor Albisu, this rustic-chic dining outpost is serving up some serious Latin American flavor with its extensive wine-centric menu. From smoked tomatoes and grilled bone marrow to a vast selection of Argentinian vinos, there is no shortage of delicious to be uncovered. delcampodc.com

3 GREEN MEANS GO Nusta Spa in downtown D.C. is the place for organic body and face treatments that infuse both beauty and nature into every intriguing service. Set in an expansive 5,000-square-foot space, the spa’s high-performance eco-efficient interiors have garnered some serious design cred. Achieving a LEED Gold certification, Nusta Spa exudes both beauty and brains—expressed through its environmental responsibility. nustaspa.com

4 ALL AMERICANWashingtonians brace yourself: Two seemingly opposite food groups appear to have had a head-on collision at G Street’s Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken. Yes, you heard right, artisanal doughnuts are artfully presented (think crème brûlée, pb&j and salted caramel) alongside butter-milk fried chicken, all handmade by chef Jason Gehring. We can’t wait to get a taste of this delicious whimsy conveyed in two iconic comfort foods. astrodoughnuts.com2

1 PAINTERLY PERSPECTIVEAs a creative, I’m inspired by so many artistic mediums—from painting, drawing and sculpture to textiles and even an affinity for vintage jewels. I strive to be adventurous in my work and my approach to convey it, never identifying with any singular style or technique. All of my work is composed in my Capitol Hill studio, and I’m excited to announce that my jewelry can now be found at Barneys New York. juliewolfedesign.com

2 MODERN APPROACHNothing beats a good night of gallery hopping out on the town. My usual suspects are Hemphill Fine Arts, G Fine Art, Connersmith and Heiner Contemporary. Though they are all inspiring, I’m always drawn to the contemporary works found at Heiner. The chic black exterior flecked with an entrancing hot pink door beckons from the street. Once inside, the stark white walls are filled with colorful masterpieces. It’s a perfect place to gain mounds of inspiration! heinercontemporary.com

CURTAIN CALLA major indulgence of mine is going to the theater, specifically at the Woolley Mammoth Theatre Company and Studio Theatre. I just love the energy found in D.C.’s creative district; there’s a resounding buzz in the air that sets you itching to see the latest production. Both theatres are slated to have thrilling plays and musicals this fall. I’m looking forward to seeing You For Me For You at the Mammoth. woollymammoth.net; studiotheatre.org

4 BOUTIQUE ENVYOnce the crispness of fall sets in, it’s time for me to browse the latest Dries Van Noten collection at Georgetown’s Relish boutique. My routine is to grab lunch at Leopold’s to avoid any blood sugar drops and then shop the day away, which is easily done in the presence of Jil Sander, Marni and Balenciaga. Every piece I buy from Relish is one that I will continue to wear time and again. relishdc.com2 3

“I’m a bit of a rebel and rather prone to taking on overwhelming challenges,”

designer and Washington, D.C., native Darryl Carter playfully confides. No

doubt this joie de vivre is the impetus behind Carter’s eponymous home décor

boutique and design studio, which he recently opened in a historic building and

carriage house in the Shaw district. e shop, with its exposed pre-Civil War

bricks and timber beams, meanders like a house museum. “It’s thick with the

history of the city,” says Carter, who raided his own warehouses of architectural

salvage to renovate the structure. “I used what took me years to accumulate.

e showroom truly expresses my design DNA.” Indeed, the carefully curated

merchandise reflects Carter’s signature style: spare, sophisticated and soulful.

In addition to his proprietary furnishing lines, the Darryl Carter showroom

carries an eclectic collection of global antiques and handcrafted items, the

latter by local artisans. “I’ve always had the heart of an artist,” says Carter. “From

historically driven projects to reinventing found furniture pieces, I always try

to bridge the modern with the antique.” darrylcarter.com; 202.234.5926

I LOVE WHAT I DO BECAUSE… I’m a person who gets great satisfaction out of creating things. It’s not uncommon for me, in the middle of the night, to take a sketchpad and add to the volumes of inspiration concepts that I tend to embrace at any given moment.

CURRENT PROJECTS: Right now, I’m working on a PBS series, and am in the midst of developing a number of home product lines.

DESIGN ICONS: A few examples of what I think were so inspired for their moment in time are the Connecticut residence of fashion designer Bill Blass, omas Jefferson’s Monticello and the staircase at the Nathaniel Russell House Museum in Charleston, South Carolina.

A WELL-DESIGNED HOME IS… Welcoming, unpretentious and void of superfluous bells and whistles. If you have a great view and privacy, skip the window cover.

COVETED ITEM: A spherical glass table clock. I love the mechanics of things; seeing how they work.

By mounting this particular project—Spectra, a tissue ink monoprint—onto a potter’s wheel, Asante captured the chaotic movement of water and color blending on a spinning surface.

WORK APPROACH: I believe that artwork should bring more peace and joy to the world.

DREAM COLLABORATION: Sam Gilliam, a brilliant color field painter. Our styles are similar in that we both love working with color abstractly and on a larger scale.

LOCAL HOT SPOT: Morton Fine Art; the owner and chief curator, Amy Morton, has a keen eye for art and design and knows how to make them flow seamlessly.

CURRENT PROJECTS: I just finished Scattered to the Wind, and I’m working on a multimedia theater project called The Clothesline Muse.

FANTASY DINNER PARTY GUESTS: I’d invite all the artists in my family to talk about the creativity that has been passed down across generations. My great-grandfather Allan Randall Freelon Sr. was a painter, photographer and printmaker, and my great-great-uncle Erwin Goodwin traveled as a valet to England. We still have his journal entries and pressed flowers.

MAYA FREELON ASANTE

Most people see a water stain and wonder how to get rid of it. Artist

Maya Freelon Asante spied a stack of tissue papers marked by water in her

grandmother’s basement and an art form was born. “A dried coffee spill on

a napkin that has left a perfect ring; that’s beautiful to me,” says Asante,

who uses high-quality tissue paper—the everyday variety doesn’t bleed—to

create quilt-like works such as the three-story installation that hangs in the

United States Embassy in Madagascar. With Asante’s enviable gene pool,

including Grammy-nominated jazz great Nnenna Freelon and award-winning

architect Philip Freelon, it is no wonder that creativity runs through her

veins. “I grew up enveloped by the arts and discovered both my heritage

and my passion at the same time,” she says. Asante, whose work can be

seen at Morton Fine Art and who counts story quilt painter Faith Ringgold

as a mentor, loves pushing the boundaries of materials and using them in

new ways. “I often find myself improvising with color, light and shape,” she

says, “kind of like the way a jazz musician scats on a solo.” mayafreelon.com

With clients ranging from Oprah Winfrey to the Saudi royal family and

commissions from the Four Seasons to the Fred W. Smith National Library,

designer David Iatesta bridges the gap between styles. When it comes to

furnishings, he also toes the line between traditional and modern. “I combine

elements from both traditional and contemporary pieces to create a timeless

product line,” he says. Drawing from his background in antique restoration,

Iatesta creates heirloom-quality furniture, accessories and lighting with the

approach of an old-world craftsman and the eye of a modern master. With

a 15-year business and 40 artisans operating out of his Stevensville studio,

Iatesta’s design empire encompasses a 350-piece-and-growing collection sold

to the trade in showrooms throughout the country. Using nature as his go-to

inspiration, Iatesta says his strength lies in visualizing something that doesn’t

exist. Case in point: the Fiore chandelier. “I was walking in the woods, saw

this beautiful branch and visualized it as a chandelier,” he says, bridging yet

another gap between what is and what can be. davidiatesta.com; 410.604.0360

IN THIS CONNECTICUT HOME, THE MARRIAGE OF NATURAL LIGHT,

AN OPEN LAYOUT AND A PERFECTLY DISPLAYED TABLEWARE

COLLECTION MAKES FOR A NOSTALGIA-INDUCING KITCHEN.

HOME PLATE

Setting out to renovate the kitchen of their cottage-style home in

New Canaan, Connecticut, a couple didn’t have to search too far

for their muse. With Dutch and Belgian heritages, respectively,

the husband and wife instinctively harked back to the enchanting

aesthetics for which their native lands are revered. “We wanted to make sure

that we retained a very cozy, vintage European vibe, like that of an old bakery,

for instance,” homeowner and designer Tessa Neleman-Pimontel explains.

Another check off their wish list was to keep the space open (notice the pared

down cabinetry; the simple ceramic subway tiling by the Bertazonni hood

and stove; uninterrupted counter space), organized and flooded with light

while retaining a sense of genuineness. “is kitchen adds an instant feeling

of authenticity to our home,” she says. “It works out well as an open space

where my husband, Hans, and I naturally gather with our kids to share

time together. Every afternoon, the low-setting sun pours in, which adds

to the whole mood we were aiming to capture.”

We were lucky to find the elements needed to achieve the style we had in mind all along of European elegance with an artistic bohemian flair.TESSA NELEMAN-PIMONTEL, ECHO AND MERCER

Opting for limited upper cabinetry, the Nelemans had to search

for alternative answers to de rigueur storage questions. “e idea

of the hutch was always in our minds, but it only came to fruition

after we found the right pieces,” Tessa notes. “Nearing the final

stages of the renovation, we took a trip to Mexico. We knew what

we were looking for, but were very surprised when we found it in

an old hardware store. We fell in love with the huge hutch and

bought it right there and then.” To balance the rustic nature of the

towering case, the homeowners kept it simple. “We like white as

a base, but there are many touches of Delft and even Guatemalan

earthenware in the mix. e key is to make sure that whatever is

visible is positioned well (handles all turned the same direction,

everything evenly spaced) and to edit, edit, edit. Keep only what

you really need and use often.” For additional visual variety, they

encircled the antique Swedish farm table with steel bistro chairs

from Vagabond Vintage in Atlanta.

When a designer approaches a master bath-

room suite with two specific inspirations in

mind—the Ritz Paris (pre-renovation) and

Carrie Bradshaw’s closet from the original

Sex and the City movie—the result is destined to be laden with glitz

and theatricality. Such is the case for this opulent space that Estee

Stanley dreamt up for a Beverly Hills client. “I wanted to make

sure that my client used every square inch of her home, and that

each space met her needs and represented who she was,” Stanley

says. e resulting bathroom is a study in simple elegance, and the

impact of letting just a few statement pieces have their moment

in the spotlight: a sinuous freestanding Waterworks tub entices a

leisurely soak; dreamy draperies in a blush tone coyly flirt with a

coquettish portrait of Marilyn Monroe; two-tone marble floors

are striking yet feel as if they’ve always been there; and finally,

the crown jewel of the room, a polyhedron chandelier Stanley

sourced from JF Chen in Los Angeles that would get the most

pragmatic person’s pulse racing.

CLOTHES QUARTERS

What’s a designer to do when a client’s existing closet space simply

isn’t sufficient for their wardrobe? Well, you relocate the master

bedroom and transform the remaining space into a dressing room

fit for a Rodeo Drive boutique, of course. “I like to think of closets

as a fun playroom for women, so I try to make them big enough

where you can have friends come over, hang out and play dress up,”

Stanley says. “is typically calls for a seating area.” e designer

brought in a custom chaise that offers her client (and her client’s

fortunate guests) a place to sit and ponder the day’s sartorial decisions,

while an antique rug from Lawrence of La Brea complements sleek

custom cabinetry. “is is one of my favorite designs I’ve done,”

Stanley says. “It’s every woman’s dream.”

MAGIC, CREAT ING A GRAPHIC GALLERY WALL WITH PAPERS

ENVIS IONED AS WORKS OF ART .

Los Angeles designer and one half of Harbinger LA, Joe Lucas created

an entryway to remember using the sleekest fall wallcoverings. A

“sucker for a salon-style wall,” Lucas began his dynamic scene with

artist Sharon Lee’s debut line as his anchor. “e chic gray-and-saffron

combo of Lee’s Chrysanthemum design caught my eye instantly,”

he says. Building from there, Lucas approached many of the papers

as he would art. “Kelly Wearstler’s provocative new Crescent design

is a recent obsession, so it needed to be framed. And the sculptural

Weitzner paper lent itself to being floated in an acrylic box, earning

the focal point position in the space.” From a Holland & Sherry-clad

flowerpot and a Wearstler-wrapped lampshade to an Innovations-

upholstered stool, Lucas reveals that wallpaper knows no boundaries.

“There are so many incredible collections out there now that it’s becoming increasingly dicult to not wallpaper every inch of each project, and I couldn’t be happier for this material’s intrepid comeback.”

BURST OUTWITH AN ARTFUL TOUCH OF WHIMSY, DESIGN CONSULTANT

SARA RUFFIN COSTELLO CONSTRUCTED A DREAMY SUNBURST

INSPIRED BY THE LATEST IN WALLPAPER.

Naturally lured by wallcoverings that possess an assured straight-lined

disposition, interiors devotee Sara Ruffin Costello unexpectedly

found herself swept away by the season’s more abstract offerings.

“I was drawn to patterns that appear out of focus; especially those

peachy, warm tones,” she explains. “ey feel less expectant than

chevron or stripes (which I love) that continue to pop up each

year.” After reveling in a veritable trove of papers, Costello sought

to create a sunburst, turning to London-based moldings manufac-

turer Solomon & Wu for a bit of architectural encouragement.

“e plaster moldings were a structured counterbalance to the

loose, dreamy quality of the papers, and the dynamic sunburst

shape has an artistic character to it, like a patterned color wheel.”

“There are no rules when it comes to wallpaper. It’s intuitive. When using a lot of papers, I strive for a strong whole-house narrative, picking up colors and themes from room to room.”

CASE STUDYGEOMETRICS AND BOLD PR INTS WERE THE DR IV ING FORCE

BEHIND THIS SOPHISTICATEDLY CLAD BOOKCASE ORNAMENTED

BY INTERIOR DESIGNER PHIL IP GORRIVAN.

“ere is so much to be excited about when it comes to wallpaper,”

exclaims New York-based interior designer Philip Gorrivan, who’s

heralded his longstanding love affair with the material through-

out his design career. His studious composition began with an

unadorned bookcase that, according to the designer, left much

to be desired. Presented with the latest lines, Gorrivan cloaked

the back of the shelves with a subtle yet striking Farrow & Ball

stripe and developed groupings of covered books in stylized

vignettes, each layer telling its own story. “Dedar’s new boldly

hued geometrics alongside Clarke & Clarke’s punchy floral patterns

provided instant inspiration for my Manhattan bookcase-scape.”

Clockwise from top: Bookcase lining, Lattice BP 3503; farrow-ball.com. George in Grey; jonathanadler.com. Birds; kremelife.com. Jackson in Indigo; romoblack.com. Flower in Japhet; wolfgordon.com. “I tend to gravitate toward geometrics or patterns that aren’t so directional. I love products that are fearlessly gutsy. It’s fun to create a little tension in a space by introducing a wallpaper that appears to completely break all the rules.”

An award-winning real estate professional with more than 27 years of experience, Nancy

Itteilag continues to lead the field with her innovative work. With an innate desire to help

others, Itteilag has ideas about making a world—starting with “a think globally act locally”

philosophy. “The most important sale I ever made was 3206 Grace Street, the future

home of Dog Tag Bakery, which will employ and train wounded warriors,” says Itteilag.

The bakery, a charming two-story, stand-alone building, will act as a professional and

educational haven for wounded veterans and their spouses. Collaborating with a top-

notch team of real estate professionals at Long & Real Estate, Inc., Itteilag brings

her humanitarian spirit and passion for interacting and helping people to her clients, her

industry and her city.

1. What are the key influences in your work today?

Immediate responsiveness to clients and providing the highest caliber of service.

2. What led you to your profession?

Friends in the Foreign Service from my days at the State Department and IBM often consulted me for help in finding homes upon their return to Washington from abroad.

3. How important is a realtor in helping someone find the home of his or her dreams?

Critical. Too many “unknowns” that an experienced realtor can help homebuyers and sellers navigate.

4. What was the best advice you received and from whom?

Always give 150 percent to everything you do—as my parents did in their careers, great role models. They were out the door at 6am everyday on their way to work, and so am I.

5. How do you think your clients would characterize you?

Dedicated, hardworking, energetic and innovative.

Visitors to Crosiadore Farm, a working horse farm

and residence on Maryland’s eastern shore, arrive via

an allée of trees. e verdant 81-acre farm is teeming

with wildlife: Seagulls glide over the water, and a

bald eagle might be spotted, as well as nesting ospreys, deer, and

perhaps even the bright flash of a red fox on the move. “You eventually

come around to the main house, which faces Chesapeake Bay,” says

Sandra Nunnerley, the homeowners’ designer. e woman of the

house is a renowned breeder of Oldenburg and Hanoverian horses

for the discipline of dressage, and both she and her husband relish

the outdoors. “Family and friends come down to ride and to just enjoy

being in nature,” Nunnerley says.

When the couple initially found the sprawling waterfront site, they

wanted to build a home that was rooted in tradition, but fresh. So

they hired architects Bernard Wharton and Don Aitken, who designed

a traditional Shingle-style home as well as equestrian facilities.

The house incorporates a rich variety of shapes and decorative

elements—from elegant millwork, to dormers and elliptical windows,

to a conical roof over the breakfast room with a copper finial—with

every detail carefully considered. “We use a vocabulary of elements

in our Shingle-style houses,” says Aitken, who worked on the project

with home builder Bob Johnson and project manager Peggy Sharp.

A center hall runs all the way through the home—from front to back.

“When somebody arrives, it pulls them through the house,” Aitken says.

Adds Nunnerley, “When you walk in the front door, you see straight

through to the bay, and the room is infused with a crystalline light that is

reflected off the water. at large center hall is crossed by another corridor

that forms the central axis of the house.” e latter opens onto the main

spaces: living, dining and breakfast rooms, which all look out to the water.

e couple enjoy maintaining the fine old traditions of horse breeding

and sharing it with friends who visit to ride, fish, and reconnect to the

countryside. So Nunnerley’s goal was to lend the look of a centuries-

old home to a new estate. “It’s a very active house,” the designer says.

“ere are dogs; there are visitors; there’s family. It was important to

make the rooms functional so they could actually spend time in them,

but it also needed to be comfortable for conversations after a long day

of riding, and for entertaining.”

To that end, Nunnerley mixed some of the homeowners’ existing

furnishings—such as an inherited piano and an elegant long dining

table—with new finds from shopping trips to New York and Europe.

And she didn’t shy away from saturated color. “e dining room’s such

a beautiful space, with French doors opening up onto Chesapeake

Bay,” she says. “I wanted the area to be warm and comfortable, so I

punctuated it with apricot walls.”

Of course, accommodations were also built for the horses, including an

oak post-and-beam stable. “I have horses myself, so I love working on

stables,” Aitken says. “In this case, the homeowners wanted a couple of

birthing stalls, which are larger so the mares have more room. We also

built an indoor riding arena.” Now that Crosiadore Farm is complete,

both the horses and the humans are well accommodated. “Every space

is usable,” Nunnerley says. “e living room is very comfortable, for just

the couple or for a large group of people. ey have a family room with

a big roaring fire and television. You can take one of the boats off the

dock and go out into the bay or go bird-watching. ere are so many

things to do. It’s such a magical place.” L

“It was very well-thought-out,” says Keith Iott, whose dual expertise

as both architect and structural engineer shows in many of the

home’s aspects—including the main level’s vast interior space.

“Builder Robert Purcell and I worked together to establish the big

picture of spatial relationships and take advantage of the views.

There’s tons of structural steel in the house, but we were able to

conceal the very large structural elements, and the open space is

uninterrupted by columns.”

Filling the space was inspired by another mandate from the owners:

to design, not decorate. “The owners are well-traveled and worldly,”

says Critzos. “They’d spent years gathering ideas from around

the world. We shifted, sorted and edited to get a direction going.”

Pulling from their surroundings, Critzos, along with Catherine

Belkov, senior director of design, and Joyce Pearl, senior residential

manager, established a neutral color palette of amber, taupe, gray

and clay for finishes and flooring, such as the variegated limestone

that flows throughout much of the house. Against that, each room

was assigned what Critzos calls a statement concept.

In the two-story living room, for example, the statement piece is a

dramatic stone wall that encompasses a sculptural steel, cherrywood

and etched-bronze fireplace with an integrated stand-up bar. “The

stone was a guiding light, because you can see it from every vantage

point,” says Critzos. “We balanced the material with comfortable,

contemporary seating in livable fabrics that are easy to care for.”

Case in point: A pair of warm amber sofas by Henredon and an

ebony-and-walnut console are welcoming yet durable pieces.

C O N T I N U E D F R O M P A G E 1 8 0 For the dining room, designer Arlene Critzos selected comfortable Designmaster chairs swathed in Fabricut’s striped chenille. Apart from the living room, but in full view, is the kitchen, for

which Critzos collaborated with kitchen designer Joni Zimmerman

of Design Solutions. “The owners entertain a lot,” says Critzos.

“We wanted it to be a social place where people could gather to

cook and be together.” To that end, cherrywood and bamboo-toned

cabinetry was designed to look like furniture, accentuated with

glass tile backsplashes and black lumiere granite countertops. Set

slightly apart, a dining room features a glass-topped table and

unobstructed views to the outdoors.

Other rooms in the home were designed with a bit more privacy

in mind yet still possess their own statement-making qualities.

The two-story library, for instance, features a custom cherrywood

bookcase with ebonized panels and a rail system to allow access

to upper-level shelves via a sliding ladder. A loft with glass rails

overlooks the space. In the master suite, a freestanding custom

headboard wall was designed and built to add architectural impact

and separate the sleeping space from a private sitting area.

Each statement-making piece creates the perfect focal point for every room

and truly reinforces the home’s overall pack-a-punch theme. “e height of

the walls and ceilings, and details like a floating walnut staircase that runs

from the basement to the second floor, were all major challenges, but

generate dramatic impact,” says Purcell. And, as Critzos concludes, “e

end result came together with no surprises and a happy client.” L

When designer Frank Babb Randolph’s client—a

friend of 15 years—sold the Victorian house in

Georgetown he helped her renovate and furnish,

she soon asked him, “Can we get together and

find another?” She was hopeful their collaboration could be resurrected

around the antiques and neutral color palette that he had initially

conjured for that home. As the president and CEO of an information

services company, the owner desired an elegant space for entertaining.

As a remarried mother of a now combined family of three boys and

two dogs, she required practicality. She also wanted Randolph to weigh

in on the houses she and her husband were vetting. “Frank and I see

eye-to-eye,” she says. “We met in the mid-1990s at an antiques shop

over an impromptu discussion about the patina on a mirror we both

loved. I asked him to come see the Victorian I was redoing. He came;

that was it: my designer for life.”

Among the offerings the couple showed Randolph was a house

with classical styling in a quiet park-like neighborhood just outside

Georgetown. Built in 1994, it had a stucco exterior with a plain yet

well-proportioned presentation that reminded the clients of a European

home. Randolph recognized elements of the Palladian style from studying

classical architecture in Italy. He also saw how some deft changes could

streamline the look. “I suggested they buy the house and tinker with its

interior elements,” recalls Randolph. “e project’s latent classicism was

right up my alley: big rooms and good proportions; an enfilade from a wide

front hall to the rear of the house; and lots of light from big windows.”

Adds landscape architect Guy Williams, “e garden design and plantings

directly reflect the classic architecture of the home. We defined the front

entry courtyard with cobblestone and brought in the large linden trees to

create an aerial hedge along the street. e owner is very fond of Belgian

gardens, so we developed more of a European-style courtyard.”

Anticipating Randolph’s changes was architect George Stavropoulos, who

had also worked on the wife’s previous home. He renovated the kitchen

and bathrooms and eliminated architectural elements obscuring the

fundamental classicism of the internal layout. “I reinforced the ceiling

across the back of the house in order to remove a columned half-wall

enclosure between the kitchen and family room,” he says. e new

completely open breakfast area retains its place as the focal point in

a bay of French doors, but it is now minimally defined by Randolph’s

graceful pairing of a garden-like pedestal table and slipcovered chairs.

Taking the home’s due east-west exposure into account, Stavropoulos

crafted full-height replacement French doors with narrow sashes for the

west side. Interior door heights were also raised 18 inches to maximize

the light’s reach. Randolph then went about reassigning furniture from

the client’s former home. He refurbished some of his custom seating with

new indoor-outdoor upholstery for durability and extended the pale hues

throughout. Select pieces of mahogany furniture present a counterpoint to

the muted palette. Although not a lover of “brown wood,” says Randolph

about traditional mahogany pieces, he favors “the contrasting punctuations

of color and sculptural form” they offer in his design.

Today, the clients couldn’t be happier in their new abode. And it was

an easy task, thanks to being on the same page as Randolph with their

like-minded approach to design. “I never had to give them more than

two fabric choices,” says Randolph. “We were just that in sync.” L

It’s a tall order by any measure: Build a Texas-size house in a

Washington, D.C., suburb that doesn’t look or feel big, and

give it the old-world styling of a French château that’s flooded

with light. Such was the task for the team commissioned by a

Houston couple who moved to the D.C. area and chose to build their

permanent home in nearby McLean. “ey had lived all over the world,

due to the husband’s position as president of an international corporation,

and desired a house that would resemble a country estate with European

influences,” says Sandra Lucas, a Houston interior designer who had

fashioned three other homes for the couple.

“Everything came together in this house,” says Lucas, owing in large part

to the talents assembled to create it. With the designer on board, the

owners turned to Stephen Yeonas Jr., who helmed the build and whose

firm also sold them their land. Yeonas—who worked on the project

alongside partners Richard Ellis and Mitch Racoosin—then called upon

her ideas. “We had a good program for the spaces and services we wanted

in the house and had strong ideas about the style we desired, particularly

in the areas where we spend a lot of time.”

Baydar, who worked with architect Gregory L. Palmer on the home, began

the process by showing the owners several pictures of châteaus in France’s

Dordogne River Valley region—the residences are notable for their pale

stone walls and dark slate roofs. “e couple just went for it,” Baydar says,

approving an exterior design that reads as a casual French country house,

but with an interior that’s “a little more formalized.” To that end, Lucas

specified details such as hand-scraped parquet floors, coffered ceilings,

hand-painted finishes and elegant custom light fixtures that hang

from groin-vaulted galleries. In addition, the designer lightened the feel

everywhere by eliminating window casings and door moldings.

Baydar then designed intimate spaces connected by vestibules, anterooms

and galleries. “e house slowly reveals itself as you’re walking through—

you want every aspect of the home to have its own feel, its own shape, so

it’s not all thrown at you at once.” at’s why details were so important in

each space—inside and out. Some of the most notable ones came from a

Paris trip that included Lucas, Owen, Racoosin and the wife.

The demilune desk in the study is a repurposed wine tasting table. A painting by Bruce Brainard hangs above the fireplace, which is flanked by Hancock & Moore armchairs. Opposite: Warnock Studios stenciled the entry’s wall with a bronze metallic leaf pattern. Lucas had the console made from antique marble pedestal bases.

During this trip, Owen, who grew up in France and speaks fluent French,

selected an octagonal Provençale fountain for the rear of the house to

anchor a classic parterre garden of boxwoods and ground cover in

alternating colors. He also chose antique gates that visitors step

through to go out back. “e garden is set up to lure one into the space,

and we took special care to create privacy but still invite a sense of intrigue

as one comes through the gates,” explains Owen. “We wanted the outside

of the home to relate to the inside and have a seamless integration that

doesn’t just abruptly end when outdoors.”

Racoosin, meanwhile, scoured flea markets with Lucas and her client,

looking for antique doors and fireplaces with their set of plans in hand. He

helped the women figure out where the materials could go and made sure

their measurements were conveyed back to the construction site. “Mitch has

this architectural bent, so he really brought a lot to the party,” the wife says.

The Formations chandeliers in the master bedroom complement the headboard, which Lucas had made using an oak architectural fragment as a crown. The hand-screened draperies by Arena Design add flair to the subtle bedding by Leontine Linens. A custom rug from Carpet Impressions imparts dimension.

A loggia underneath the home’s expansive terrace and outdoor kitchen looks out toward a French-style garden and fountain. The square-cut fieldstone on most of home’s exterior was sourced from western Maryland. Tables from Joyce Horn Antiques and cozy seating by Lee Industries invite relaxation.

A poolside bathroom provides storage, while a sliding louvered door offers privacy for the water closet and shower. The vessel sink—with a wall-mounted faucet from Rocky Mountain Hardware—is affixed to a Restoration Hardware console.

As they considered each piece, she adds, “we’d be on the phone, standing in

Paris, talking to the superintendent on the job.” In all, they purchased four

fireplace mantels, five sets of doors and several major pieces of furniture,

which give age, distinction and a timeless quality to the new home.

In the end, the homeowners were pleased with their new dwelling that

is filled with rich history, and Yeonas applauds the work of everyone

involved. “I’m blown away by the level of detail in the architecture and

interior design,” he says. Adds Lucas, “I love the finished product of

this home. I see the client’s personality throughout the spaces and am

reminded of the great experience of working with this talented team.” L

Adding 10 extra feet on the rear of this house made all the difference in the function and beauty of the home. A renovated gourmet kitchen is accentuated by the fantastic, new eating area flooded by natural light.

Formerly a 1961 Williamsburg Cape, this total house transformation added all the comforts of a modern home, including a family foyer, master suite and chef-quality kitchen, complete with walk-in-pantry and comfortable outdoor space.

For more than 20 years, Bowers Design Build has operated upon the premise that all home building and remodeling projects were created equal. From a new home to a master bathroom renovation, every job is held to the same exacting standards of Bruce and Wilma Bowers. “Every client is unique, and we start with a clean slate for each,” says Wilma, co-owner and vice president of business operations. Invariable, however, is their rigorous approach to establishing client objectives—long before construction takes place. “One of the first things we give our clients is a proprietary document we call the Bowers’ Design Survey,” explains Wilma. “It gives the client the opportunity to answer the question: What are our true priorities for this project?” The survey also addresses functionality and aesthetics with both qualitative and quantitative questions like: “How do you use the space in your existing home?” And, “On a scale from 1 to 10, how much natural sunlight in your home is important?” A final question, retrospective in nature, addresses the big picture in a creative manner: “After the project is completed, and you have guests over, what are five adjectives you would like them to use when describing this new space?” Time and time again, this analytical method has proven to be an invaluable resource to both Bowers and the client. “Once we understand the client objectives, we take a holistic approach to reaching them,” says Bruce. “For instance, a client may say that they want to renovate their kitchen and eating space. However, through our Design Survey, we uncover that they also need more space for the family’s sporting equipment and a study in the adjacent space. We do our absolute best to enhance the livability of a home in its entirety.”

WHAT ARE THE KEY INFLUENCES IN YOUR WORK TODAY? It starts and ends with the client. We design and build for our unique, individual clients and their unique, individual needs.

WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION? Bruce is a third-generation builder. But what makes him unique is that he understands you can’t be a great designer without great craftsmen. That is why he feels strongly about the design/build model where there is a single source of accountability.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NEXT? We are currently working on two large whole-house renovations and several smaller, but equally as important, renovations. We love a variety of projects.

The addition of this sunroom to a traditional-styled home has given the homeowners views of the sunrise and sunset. This “getaway” space, with floor-to-ceiling windows, has become the favorite room in the house.

The wooded setting around this home is beautiful. The new, modern kitchen and floor-to-ceiling glass exterior walls accentuate the ability to appreciate the beauty of the encompassing nature.

“We would definitely call Bowers for our next design/build project. We honestly enjoyed every step of the process and ended up with a home that we absolutely love.”
