Entrepreneurship Development by EWYL -Liza Pinheiro T.Y B.Sc (Agri)
The ability to earn money has become crucial to life in a highly monetized world. The competition for jobs has become
quite intense and finding a job is becoming harder day by day. Entrepreneurship or ability to set up one’s own business
and earn money is one way out of the cycle of unemployment and under-employment.
To impart skills in production of goods and services as well as money management skills, the Don Bosco College of
Agriculture in Sulcorna village of Quepem taluka has come up with an initiative of “Earn While You Learn” (EWYL)
to help us students learn entrepreneurship hands-on-the-job. This learning programme includes activities that are Agri-
based such as fruit processing (chips, jams, pickles, squashes, marmalades, etc), dairy products (curd, lassi, paneer, kulfi,
shrikhand), biofertilizer production, panchgavya , vegetables and mushroom cultivation, seed production, sugarcane
nursery establishment, fodder production, biological and organic pest control, and lot more. We students have started
marketing the dairy products at events on the campus as well as through shops in the neighbourhood. The consumer
feedback is positive and a boost to the student entrepreneurs. The EWYL program is building self-reliance and important
skills in us through the experience.
Earning money while learning is also building valuable work experience, where job markets tend to favour experience
over education. The constructive work now will develop a healthy employment transition to adulthood. This will help us
feel more independent and develop a sense of responsibility as young adults.

Azolla as food!!! - Priyanka Parab Sr..B.Sc.(Agri) -
As part of animal science demonstration in our RAWE Program, we had to demonstrate the farmers about the azolla cultivation
in their farms. So we selected one of our host farmers farm Mr. Ryan Rego to conduct the Azolla cultivation demonstration for
the Malcornem village farmers. We invited many farmers who have livestock in their farm. Prior to the demonstration we dug
the pit of size 1.3m width, 3m length and 30cm depth to save the time of the farmers. We brought the azolla fern culture from
our college. On the next day, when the farmers had gathered at the demonstration site, we laid the paddy straw on the floor of
the pit and covered it and the sides of the pit with the plastic sheet to store water in it. We then filled the pit with water and
then mixed the well-dried and sieved fertile soil plus sieved dry cow dung into the pit to provide the fern with the required
nutrients.
We explained to the farmers how it can help then to reduce their cost on feed given to the animal by mixing the azolla along
with the concentrates, as in addition to its traditional cultivation as a biofertilizer for wetland paddy (due to its ability to fix
nitrogen), azolla is finding increasing use for sustainable production of livestock and feed. Azolla is rich in proteins and can supply
up to 22% of proteins, essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals to the animals. Studies describe feeding azolla to dairy cattle,
pigs, ducks, and chickens, with reported increase in milk production, weight of broiler chickens, and egg production of layers, as
compared to conventional feed.

Azolla has also been suggested as a foodstuff for human consumption, too. However, no long-term studies on health benefits of
eating azolla have been made on humans. It even adds an aesthetic value to the farm since the tiny water fern which looks
wonderful when its floating in water. From our demonstration, farmers found the azolla to be very interesting and profitable
when it comes to feeding animals and even its ability to fix nitrogen in the wetland paddy fields. Some of the farmers even loved
their beautiful green appearance used in a farm pond to increase the aesthetic value of their farm.
Christmas Party
The Don Bosco College of Agriculture, Sulcorna, celebrated Christmas in association with the Don Bosco Farm High School. We
arranged various programs like skits, dances, and carol singing competition. We even had inter class star making competition in
which the final year students bagged the first price for their creative work of preparing the star using all organic materials in it,
we even released our weekly college wall magazine “Chimera” by our Director Fr. Allwyn D’Souza, our Principal Satish Patil Sir,
Fr. Bernadino de Almeida along with the editors of the issue. Then we even had Christmas treat for which our Earn While You
Learn students group had prepared delicious custard and veg rolls. We enjoyed the celebration very much. It was a treat.
DBCA participates in the KRISHI MELAVA & Exhibition
The students of Don Bosco College of Agriculture, Sulcorna-Goa, participated in the KRISHI MELAVA- CUM-EXHIBITION organized
by Goa Directorate of Agriculture in collaboration with Farmers’ Science Centre or Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)-South Goa,
Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA)-South Goa, NABARD and Ravindra Bhavan at Curchorem- Sanvordem,
Sanguem taluka, South Goa. The aim of the exhibition was to inform and enable the farmers of South Goa to manage various
crops during the current season. The exhibition was open to public on 27 and 28 December, 2018.
Although it is the semester break and festive season of Christmas, we students living in nearby villages in Quepem and Sanguem
talukas volunteered to be at the stall of the DBCA-Sulcorna along with staff member, Ms. Mamta Udpikar from Rivona. Assistant
Professor of Entomology, Rajan Shelke Sir, was present on 27 December to set up the stall, guide the students and he also made
a presentation to the farmers on management of fungal blast disease that severely affects rice crop during the Vaingonn or Rabi
season.
The DBCA-Sulcorna stall displayed the specimens of various insects like Rhinoceros beetle of coconut; Cashew Stem and Bark
Borer (CSRB), in both adult and the damaging ‘grub’ or larval stage; various butterflies and moths of which the caterpillars eat or
damage the leaves of fruit crops, rice and also other crops. Various herbal insect repellents, fungal bio-control agents for insects
as well as soil-borne fungal diseases were on display and were explained by the student volunteers with the help of specimens,
samples and charts.
The students also explained bee-keeping for honey production and better pollination of crops, a project being implemented by
the college for the farmers in nearby villages with the financial assistance of NABARD. The Director of Agriculture, Madhav
Kelkar Sir, and other officers evinced keen interest in the exhibits. The stall was appreciated by the farmers who visited and had
their queries answered. There was a request to include the common name of the insects in the labels for the benefit of the
farmers. This will be done for future exhibitions to make it useful to the target group.

Entrepreneurship workshop At DBCA…. – Andrea Cheradil Sr. B.Sc.(Agri)
Our college organized an entrepreneurship awareness camp in association with Goa State Innovation Council and don Bosco
College of engineering.The programme was basically meant to encourage us to become entrepreneurs. for this different
speakers were invited to conduct sessions for us. these include Mr. David D’Souza, Mr. Ramchandra Salgaonkar, Ms. Suvarna
Surlekar, Sushant Surlekar and Mr. Sudip Faldessai.
On the first day Mr. David D’Souza spoke on ideation and the process of nurturing an idea into a business. In the afternoon
session Ramchandra Salgaonkar spoke on identifying opportunities for entrepreneur. He explained the problems that could
possibly stand in our way of establishing a business venture. He gave tips with respect to the economics of a business and asked
us make positive goals in order to achieve success.
On the second day Ms. Suvarna Surlekar delivered sessions on intellectual property rights and explained the process of
registration. She explained the importance of getting a patent for our inventions and innovations and gave examples from her
personal experiences. In the afternoon Mr. Sushant Surlekar arranged an interactive session on creativity and communication
skills. He asked to brainstorm and come up with random ideas which will change the status quo. He also educated us on the
basics of communication and to read others to understand what was unspoken. His session also includes tricky problem which
served the purpose of forcing us to think outside the box. Overall this was the most interactive session.
On the third and final day Mr. Sushant Faldessai delivered a session on government schemes and policies which are currently
available for start-ups. This session put to rest a few questions as to the subject of arranging funds and in laying the foundation
for a business.
After the sessions, Fr. Allwyn D’Souza expressed his views and expectations from the students and promised the complete
support of the college to setup a business. At the end, we were asked to give our feedback about the programme. We were
given the certificates for attending these sessions. In my opinion, the session was a very nice initiative from the college to help
the students to setup a business and become their own bosses and give more to the society while earning more for themselves.
Vegetable cultivation -Tanvy Damodar Surlekar Sr.B.Sc (Agri)
Vegetable growing is hobby of some people. Gowing vegetable growing ensures supply of fresh vegetables which are chemical
free and safe to consume while also reducing household expenses. In our college, the fourth year students in Semester- VIII
have a module of ‘Commercial Vegetable Production’ in which we are growing vegetables like radish, spinach, amaranth,
coriander, chillies, fenugreek, cluster bean, etc. The students also market these vegetables. The complete cultivation is done by
the fourth year students.
The leafy vegetables need protection from pest and diseases. If leaves are damaged by pests and diseases, the vegetables will
fetch a lower value in the market. In organic agriculture, the pests and diseases are controlled by use of microbial formulations,
pheromone traps and trap cropping. A ’Trap crop’ is a crop which acts as protection for main crop i.e. .pest will attack the trap
crop and vegetable crop will be saved. Mostly maize and marigold and grown as trap crops. The leafy vegetables are grown on
flat beds while chilly is grown on ridges and furrows. This module is under Horticulture and this module is coordinated by
Assistant Professor Dr. Gourish Karanjalkar of the Horticulture Department.
YUVA SANGRAM 2K19 - Krutika Raut F.Y. B.Sc (Agri)
The Don Bosco college of agriculture participated in YUVA SANGRAM an event organised by CES College OF Arts & Commerce,
Cuncolim. Tthe event was very well organised and we participated with enthusiasm and excitement. We participated in all the
events like fancy dress, ad- mad show, fusion dance, fruit carving, wealth out of waste, collage making, and the main event Mr. &
Miss Yuva Sangram. We were all prepared to set the stage on fire. The dedication was seen in each and every student of DBCA-
Sulcorna. The thirst to win the event and get the laurels to our college drove us crazy. Our GS and CS were very calm, patient
and supportive. With their encouragement and support we have achieved success. Without having much time to rehearse, we
managed to practice and worked hard to get the things done. The main reason for our victory was our unity. This was my first
experience to participate in inter-collegiate Youth Festival. I sometimes wonder how blessed I am to have such friendly, helpful,
cooperative and loving seniors.
Ultimately, we won the event by getting first place in fancy dress, first place in wealth out of waste, second place in fusion dance,
third place in photography, first place in regard before you discard, and third place in ad-mad show. This hard work was
rewarded with the overall champion’s trophy. The winner’s trophy of YUVA SANGRAM 2k19 handed with honour to Don Bosco
College of Agriculture. This was the best and most awaited moment of my life. This was our first victory of the year 2019 and
many more will come our way. #amchocultureagriculture. Looking forward to many more .
