1 Background

1.1 Loco

By the mid-sixties it had become apparent to Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) that their fleet of E-11 and E-42 locomotives were no longer powerful enough, and so in 1974 three locomotiveprototypes were built under the classification of DR-Baureihe 250. These prototypes differedvisually from production locomotives in a few ways. The most obvious being the largerwindows and alternate lighting configuration. Designed for passenger and freight use, thelocomotives were introduced between 1977 and 1984 in DR’s crimson livery. They were usedfor heavy cargo and DR’s Städteexpress services, a forerunner of the modern Intercityservices offered by DB.

Following the reunification of Germany the DR-Baureihe 250 fleet were renumbered as BR155 and assigned to DB Cargo as freight locomotives. They still run throughout Germanypulling freight trains under DB Schenker ownership.

The locomotives have a pair of powered 3-axleed bogies (Co-Co) with a central wheel setcapable of moving 60mm to allow a tighter turning radius. Powered by overhead current, thetorque is transferred by a double-sided spur gear to a hollow shaft, and by elastic rubbercone flange to the wheels. Originally built with scissor-style pantographs, many have sincebeen refitted with more modern single-arm pantographs. A number have also been fitted withLZB to allow heavy haulage across German’s high -speed network.

5.5 Semi-Automatic Tap Changer

Rather than using a standard throttle, the BR155 uses a control mechanism called a “TapChanger”.  This control allows the driver to set the desired amount of power for the loco

based on ‘tap notches’, which the system then slowly runs up or down to in order to achievedriving force.

There are 34 notches on the tap changer control, 0  –  30 are used to set the targeted tapposition. Below 0 there are 3 more notches, ‘Run Up’, ‘Hold’ and ‘Run Down’. The run up anddown notches automatically increase or decrease the selected tap notch, whilst the holdnotch maintains the currently selected tap. The current tap is indicated by the digital readouton the dash amongst the LED display lights.

It takes about 1/3 rd of a second to change from one tap position to the next. In order to runup from 0 to 30, or down from 30 to 0, it takes approximately 9.6 seconds in total. Thismeans that even if the driver has selected notch ‘0’ on the Tap Control, there is still drivingpower being applied until the tap changer reaches the ‘0’ position.

5.6 Tap Changer Fault

The Tap changer can trigger faults under certain circumstances, which cause power to belost and for the fault to need resetting before power can be re-applied.The various circumstances that a tap changer fault can be triggered are as follows:

Electric Brake application, if the electric brake is applied whilst the tap changer is above tapposition ‘0’.

Emergency Brake application, if at any point the emergency brake is applied this will causean the Electric Brake to be applied, which will trigger a fault. The emergency brake willremain active until the loco comes to a stand-still, at which point the fault can be reset.

Quick Throttle Off, if the reverser is set to neutral whilst the tap changer is above tap position‘0’. This fault is sometimes purposefully triggered and referred to as ‘quick throttle off’. Thiswill immediately stop power being applied to the loco, rather than waiting for the tap controlto run down to the ‘0’ position.

Amperage Over load, if the power being appl ied to the traction motors exceeds 450amps formore than a few seconds. This will cause the Circuit Breaker to trip as well, which will alsoneed resetting before power can be applied.

To reset the Tap Changer Fault, the Tap Changer must be run down to tap ‘0’ the TapControl must be set to notch ‘0’ and the Reverser must be set to neutral position. If the

Circuit Breaker has also been tripped, then it will also need resting. The Circuit Breaker resetis keyboard ‘Z’ or the ‘Engine Start’ button on the HUD , or the ‘Circuit Breaker’ control switchin the cab.

5.7 Train and Electric Brake

The Electric Brake (Dynamic Brake) in the BR155 is paired with the Train Brake lever in thecab, and is not able to be operated independently. At and below 20km/h only the air brake is

operated through the Train Brake control lever, above 20km/h up to 120km/h the air andelectric brakes blend, phasing from air to electric the faster speed the loco is travelling. Above 120km/h only the dynamic brake is in operat ion.

The maximum amount of power able to be applied to the electric brake can be selected withthe Electric Brake Power control, if this is set to 0% then the electric brake will not be appliedat all. This can be useful when needing to apply the brakes before the tap changer hasreached position ‘0’ in order to avoid a tap changer fault.

5.8 Power Selector

There is another control on the driver’s desk that allows modulating the amount of powerapplied to the traction motors. This control allows the reduction or increase of maximum

power by 50  –  130%. This control is commonly used to regulate the power when pullingheavy freight consists.

Setting the Power Selector above 100% for an extended amount of time can be dangerous asit will lead to an excessive amount of power being applied to the traction motors which cancause them to overload.

6 Sifa System

Sifa is short for Sicherheitsfahrschaltung or “Safety Driving Switch”.

The Sifa vigilance alerter is disabled at startup, but can be activated or deactivated bypressing ‘Shift+Enter(Numpad)’. While activated the Sifa light on the cab dashboard isnormally switched off. While the train is moving the driver is required to confirm an alarmevery 30 seconds.

When the 30 second alarm is triggered the Sifa light on the cab dashboard will illuminate, after an additional 2.5 seconds an audible alert will sound. After a further 2.5 seconds theemergency brake will be applied. This can be avoided by acknowledging the alarm at anystage by pressing the ‘Enter(Numpad)’ key or the warning icon on the HUD.

It is possible to release the brake triggered by a Sifa emergency application byacknowledging the alarm. After acknowledging the emergency, the brake will be released butthe loco will not be able to apply power until the throttle is first set to the off position.

7 PZB Signaling

PZB stands for Punktförmige Zugbeeinflussung, loosely translated to English this means“Spotwise Train Control”.

Safe distances between trains are managed conventionally through the use of block-basedsystems.

A given line is broken up in to a series of blocks, and trains are perm itted (via green oryellow) signals to enter a block. While a train is present in a block the signal permitting entryis set to red, preventing any more trains to enter.

As ra ilways have developed, more complex cont rol systems and in -cab signal ling have beenimplemented to improve the safety of the railways and to ensure that drivers are fully awareof what is happening around them by requiring them to react in certain ways according towhat is happening.

PZB is a complex system and requires that you understand the varying speed limits and therequirement to respond promptly to the signalling system.

7.1 PZB Track Interface

The PZB system incorporates in-cab signalling, this iswhere the control desk has indicators, alarms andbuttons that will react according to the signalling statuson the railway. The mechanism by which this works is aseries of “balise” magnets placed on the side   of thetrack. An example of one of these magnets is shown inthe image on the left.

7.2 Cab Controls

There are also three controls on the cab desk that you will need to use in order to interactwith the PZB system. These three controls, to the left of the control desk, are:OverrideFree

8 LZB Signaling

8.1 LZB

The restriction of conventional block signalling is the amount of time taken by trains toensure they can stop from their first notification of a signal at danger. This affects themaximum speed that trains can operate and is in relation to the length of the block.Unfortunately while lengthening blocks can allow trains to run faster it means that fewertrains can run as the gaps between them get progressively longer.

The modern solution to this problem is to change from fixed block signalling to a dynamicsliding block that protects a range in front of the locomotive that is changing as thelocomotive moves.

LZB is controlled by a central control station; each one monitors approximately 100kilometres of line and informs the on-board LZB computer what speed limit is dynamicallybeing imposed on. The following image shows the displays related to LZB functionality on a

BR155 locomotive cab dashboard. Note that the displays are standard across all LZBcapable locomotives.

In the above example, LZB has been enabled and we can see the following:

A  – Distance to next speed change.

B  – Target speed taking into account LZB speed restrictions.C  – Target speed in digit form.D  – Indicator that LZB is switched on.E  – Indicator that LZB is currently active.F  – LZB mode terminating if illuminated.G  – Overspeed Indicator.

LZB must be turned on before the LZB signalling system can be activated.Traditionally the LZB signalling system is automatically activated as you passone of these LZB posts as shown in the picture on the left, however it canalso be activated manually.

If PZB is being used then it is automatically switchedto a background operation mode when LZB isactivated.

LZB mode will be automatically disabled when thetrain passes over an LZB termination balise such as the one shown inthe picture on the right. If PZB was enabled then it will return to anactive state as the LZB system is switched off.

You get an in-cab warning that LZB mode is terminatingapproximately 1.7km before it actually ends with the “Ende” lightilluminating and an audible alarm. This warning must be acknowledged within 10 seconds bypressing the PZB/LZB Acknowledge button or the “Page Down” key on the keyboard –  if you

do not then the emergency brake will be applied.
