Back in the days this day was celebrated as a festival in certain towns. the pumpkins were carved and even some big squashes. Faces were carved into the pumpkins and put around the town and outside the front doors. This was a way to chase evil spirits way, that would explain the scary faces.

Halloween used to be celebrated even in the earlier days. But the difference was that it was known as "ALL HALLOWS EVE." This day was where women who considered themselves "wickens" which weren't not "witches" as most people call them now.

Another thing that was used was an apple cut in half with a saige leaf across the center. This apples were thrown around in the shape of a circle in order to make a force feel around the protected area. This was believed that it protected the people from evils that tried to enter into the celebration.

Also traditionally bobbing-for-apples was one of the games played by the people. Other famous games were based on looking into the future and dressing up to mimic the gouls and spirits they were trying to chase away. Children were usually intertained by the town's joker who made up games and told scary stories. The wickens were believed to have the power to show you the first letter of the name of your true love. They would peel an apple and then drop it into a barrel of water; the apple peel would form into the corresponding first letter.
