WHY?

Days  are  held  to  raise  awareness  and  draw  attention  to  a  particular  issue

Be  a  starting  point  for  action    And  to  inspire  increased

awareness  and  action  amongst  groups  (Schools)  and  individuals  (kids  like  you!)

Why  do  we  need  an  Int’l  Day  of  the  Girl?   Did  you  know?

All  around  the  world  girls  face  double  discrimination  because  of  their  age  and  their  gender

Being  a  girl  matters

Millions  of  girls  in  developing  countries  face  obstacles  and  stereotypes  ….just  because  they  are  girls

Why  do  we  need  an  Int’l  Day  of  the  Girl?    So  what??

  Being  a  girl  matters

This  means  they  face  challenges/barriers  with  things  like…

Education    Healthcare    Enough  to  eat    Freedom  to  make  their  own  choices  about  marriage  and  children

Opportunities  to  participate  in  their  communities  as  leaders  and  decision  makers

Did  you  know…  Around  the  world…    1  in  3  girls  around  the  world  are  denied  an  education

75  million  girls  are  not  in  school

Every  year,  10  million  girls  are  forced  or  talked  into  marriage

1  in  7  girls  in  the  developing  world  will  be  married  before  they  are  15,  some  as  young  as  5

But  the  possibility  of  change  is  real…

Shocking  statistics…But  change  is  possible!!!      Girls  have  amazing  potential  to  create  change  and  influence  the  lives  of  those  around  them  (like  their  sons,  daughters,  sisters,  brothers,  and  cousins)

But  the  possibility  of  change  is  real…

Shocking  statistics…But  change  is  possible!!!     When  girls  are  healthy,  educated  and  know  their  rights  ….they  can  work  hand  in  hand  with  women,  boys  and  men  to  change  the  world!

But  the  possibility  of  change  is  real…  Did  you  know…..A  girl  who  makes  it  through  both  high  quality  elementary  and  secondary  education  is…      More  likely  to  be  literate,  health

and  survive  into  adulthood

More  likely  to  reinvest  her  income  back  into  her  family,  community  and  country

Likely  to  experience  less  violence  or  marry  and  have  children  at  a  very  young  age

More  likely  to  understand  and  know  her  rights  and  be  a  force  for  change

Interna/onal  Day  of  the  Girl:  Oct  11th

This  week  is  a  call  for  everyone  to  realize  how  important  education  is  when  it  comes  to  unleashing  the  power  and  potential  of  girls

Let’s  make  a  difference,  show  the  world  that  girls  are  worth  it  and  be  an  advocate
