Dear friend,

When I first started feeling as if my body didn’t

belong to me back in 2009, I was a mess. I

struggled to make sense of what was

happening to me but I kind of ignored it. I

thought that since I was a full-time working

nurse and a mother of 2 toddlers, I was simply

tired. I also thought that because I had the

knowledge of health and medicine then, I was

going to figure this out for myself in no time.

But you don’t look sick!

Chronic fatigue syndrome, left me wiped out of energy and out of

money. What was worse? It was a puzzle with no clear treatment

plans. Feeling discouraged, I didn’t believe that I would become

well again. But then, I had an epiphany. I needed to go back to the

basics of a cleaned body.

You see, I knew what I was doing was not serving me but I didn’t

know what I should do differently.

I shifted my mindset and energy to listen to my body. I started

Detox seems to be the entire buzz word nowadays, with a list of

superfoods, substances, and supplements to detox or cleanse the

body. But what is detoxification anyway?

Every day, our bodies are bombarded by a variety of pollutants in

our environment. Unfortunately, much of it is unavoidable. Therefore,

it is so important to add detoxifying foods to your everyday life. If you

aren't eating to cleanse your body from all of the bad things that

you are exposed to each day, your health will be affected and your

energy will dwindle down tremendously.

There are major organs in the body that need support to keep us

healthy and energised – the liver, which helps us make and regulate

many hormones plus help us detox out excess toxins, the adrenal

glands, which also make many hormones, including cortisol that help

us handle stress, and the gut, which handle digestion. These three

major areas have an interrelationship with each other and play a

vital role and how we feel.

It sounds complicated, but there is good news; you don't need to go

on a fancy or expensive detox diet, and you don't need to starve

yourself. You just need to include some detoxifying foods into your

everyday life. By simply adding detoxifying foods, you are not only

cleansing your body but also gaining more energy.

When we are healthy, our bodies automatically eliminate the waste

left behind including toxins. I know “toxins and detox” are two words

that have been the buzz in the natural health scene lately. They are

not new and are known by different terms in several ancient

cultures. I personally do not like to use these two words lightly. But for

our purpose, I will attempt to define them as simple as possible.

Toxins tend to evoke only environmental burden such as fume from

your car, asbestos in an old building, or black smoke from the pipe of

a chemical or factory plant. However toxins are any substances or

compound that can be harmful to the body. Toxins can be

chemicals created by the natural processes occurring in the body,

or substances that we have ingested or breathe in without even

realizing it. If these substances are left in place, they can result in

diseases and discomfort and even make us feel sluggish.

Most of the “fun and comfort foods” we reach out to when we are

going to any kind of emotional turmoil can actually create harm to

the body if we are not functioning at an optimum level. We are

exposed in our modern day living to constant stress and demands

onto our body that makes it difficult to sometimes function to our

highest ability.

I define Detox or cleansing as supporting the body to do what it

automatically does best: eliminate unwanted waste that could rob

you of your energy and even make you sick.

After accumulation of toxins in the body, the body’s detoxification

pathways have to work harder to do the process naturally. You may

find yourself getting sick more often, you constantly have a cold, feel

tired, experiencing pain and many other symptoms.

These symptoms are your body telling you it’s struggling to perform its

job well. You can either stop what you are doing and make some

changes or continue until the body simply gives up fighting. When

the systems in our body become overloaded and overwhelmed, we

may experience several of the following symptoms:

Feeling extremely tired all the time

Headaches

Difficulty falling or stay asleep

Mood swings /anxiety

Depression and sadness

Digestive issues such as belly bloat, indigestion or constipation

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Allergies (seasonal, chemical or food)

Autoimmune or chronic diseases including fibromyalgia,

diabetes, asthma and many more.

While it’s true that the body goes into the detoxification process

automatically every second, cleansing regularly can enhance these

natural aspects. It’s like having a car. You take it to change the oil,

do tune up so it can give you the best mileage and longevity.

Supporting our body with what we eat is simply making sure that we

live healthy and have the energy to do the things we love by:

feel full, therefore you eat less. Try avocado in the morning for

breakfast by itself, with toast or use a quarter in your

smoothie/shake or fiber packed soup.

CAULIFLOWER

Known as a cruciferous vegetable (of the cabbage family),

cauliflower is loaded with antioxidants. Cauliflower is a great

addition to any plate. It isn't just healthy, it has also been known

to increase heart health and fight cancer. Some easy ways to

enjoy cauliflower include roasted, pulse in a food processor

and use as 'rice', used in mashed potato, used for pizza crust or

blended into soup.

clean the liver. While you may not want to eat it at every meal,

as it can be fattening, it has huge benefits when it is added into

your favorite foods such as salads or sautéed vegetables.

Also from the cabbage family, broccoli is usually recognized as

a cancer preventative and offers many amazing detoxifying

benefits for the body. Not only is it high in fiber, allowing for the

body's natural detoxification through waste elimination, it is also

high in water content, vitamin C and a powerful antioxidant.

Try broccoli sprout if available for higher nutrients. Add the

sprout to your shake, smoothie, soup or salad to kick-start your

day into high energy gear. Broccoli can be enjoyed raw if you

preferred.

LIME

You can't talk about detoxifying foods without talking about

the citrus family but especially lime. It is recommended that you

drink a glass of warm water with lime juice, a pinch of sea salt

or pink Himalayan sea salt, first thing every morning to improve

your digestion, help your body to flush out toxins, and keep your

BEETS

Believe it or not, beets are the powerhouse to my energy and

strength. Adding beets to your meal is a great way to detox the

body. Beets not only prompt the liver to start letting go of toxins,

they also help to flush those toxins out of the body so they do

not get reabsorbed. It’s a great vegetable to give you extra

energy. Eat is roasted in salad, or boiled or add it raw to your

morning smoothie or oatmeal.

One of the best things you can do for your body is to start

detoxifying on a regular basis. Find ways to add these foods to

your meals and you will reap the benefits.

Herbs to boost energy are called adaptogens. They are plants

that can help balance adrenal function to decrease stress and

increase your energy. They are available as foods and/or

supplements depending on the adaptogen. They are well

worth trying. One of my favorite is Holy basil or Indian Tulsi.

You can use it fresh or as a tea. Add about 1 teaspoon of herbs

to 1 cup of boiled water. Steep for 5 minutes and enjoy.

CUCUMBER-APPLE-BEET LIVER CLEAN SMOOTHIE

Serves 1-2

You can double this recipe

1 cup spinach

½ cucumber

½ bunch of parsley

½ medium beets, washed, unpeeled if organic but peel if not

1 ½ cup water or non-dairy milk (coconut, hemp, or almond milk)

½ green apple

1 tablespoon flax meal

One of the best things you can do for your body is to start
