THURSDAY, APRIL 23
USA/PERU
Depart from Newark airport, on a nonstop flight to Lima, Peru.
Overnight at COSTA DEL SOL RAMADA .
FRIDAY, APRIL 24 LIMA (B,D)
Breakfast at the hotel. Start our sightseeing tour with private
coach and guide for a full day tour. We will drive 30 minutes
southeast of Lima to visit the Pachacamac Pilgrimage Center.
Built around 700 A.D. as a temple for the worship of the sun
god, Pachacamac, it housed an oracle that is believed to be one
of the main pilgrimage centers in pre-Columbian Peru, and on a
par with Cusco. Pilgrims flocked here from far away to worship
Pachacamac, who was believed to be the creator of the world
and its creatures. The site includes palaces, plazas and temples
that have been painstakingly restored. The on-site museum has
a collec-on of local relics. This is followed by a tour of the
Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology. The museum
collec-on documents the development of every major culture
and civiliza-on in Peru, from the first hunter-gatherers to
modern -mes.
We will then go to the Luna House in the San Isidro district,
which has an exquisite collec-on of Na-vity scenes. We will
then enjoy dinner at Huaca Pucllana, located in an unparalleled
se4ng within the compound of 1,500 -year old- adobe pyramid
built by the original inhabitants of Lima (is one of the city's
greatest dining surprises). The restaurant is handsomely
designed in a rus-c colonial style; you can dine indoors or out,
but the best spot is without a doubt the covered terrace. The
menu is crea-ve Peruvian, with fusion touches spicing up
classic criollo cooking.
Overnight at CASA ANDINA PRIVATE COLLECTION MIRAFLORES.
SATURDAY, APRIL 25 LIMA (B,L)
In the morning, our tour will start at the Love Park, located on
the cliffs of Miraflores, which has a spectacular view of Lima's
Bay. We will then go to the Pucllana Temple, a 25-meter high
pre-Hispanic truncated pyramid built by the Lima culture
between 200 and 700 AD. The complex includes squares,
ramps and staircases, apart from warehouses of ar-facts that
would have been offered to the dei-es.
In downtown Lima you may visit the Presiden-al Palace and
the Lima Cathedral, impressive construc-ons that are s-ll being
used. From there we will walk to Saint Francis' Church, which
has an enviable collec-on of old books and it has an authen-c
network of catacombs open to the public. We will finally go to
the Larco Museum, founded by Rafael Larco Hoyle in 1926. The
museum, located inside a viceregal mansion built on a pre-
Columbian pyramid of the 7th century, houses the most
complete pre-Hispanic collec-on of gold and silver ar-facts as
well pieces of ero-c art. Over 45,000 archaeological ar-facts
bear witness to five thousand years of Peruvian history.
We will enjoy lunch at Café del Museo Larco. We will then be
transferred to go back to our hotel.
Overnight at CASA ANDINA PRIVATE COLLECTION MIRAFLORES.
SUNDAY, APRIL 26
LIMA/CUSCO—SACRED VALLEY (B,L)
A transporta-on service will pick us up from our hotel at the
established -me and will transfer us to the airport of Lima.
Includes a representa-ve.
Flight to Cusco.
Arrival in Cusco. Our tour will start en route to the Sacred
Valley, where we will visit Awanakancha, a farm of South
American camelids and showroom of tex-les, where local
families show the en-re tradi-onal process of weaving and
making garments. We will then visit the Pisac citadel, a town
shaped as a partridge, which is known for two reasons: for the
craD market established between colonial buildings and for
housing one of the most impressive complex of agricultural
terraces of the valley. The market has scores of stands that
exhibit and sell products manufactured by the residents of the
area.
We will enjoy lunch at Wayra Ranch. Rich soil, ideal weather
and millenary wisdom have combined to make the Sacred Valley
arguably the most fer-le in the world. You will probably become
a believer as you indulge in its bounty. Then we will delight
ourselves with a surprising gastronomic feast led by the
prominent Chef, Pedro Miguel Schiaffino and Nacho Solis.
ADer we have our lunch we will go to Ollantaytambo, a typical
example of the urban planning of the Incas, whose residents s-ll
live in accordance with their old tradi-ons. Pachacútec (1438-
1471) conquered the town, destroyed it and built a new one,
absorbing it as part of his empire. The Ollantaytambo fortress is
a huge archaeological complex which, although it bears the
name of fortress, it was actually a tambo, a leisure city used to
accommodate the delega-ons that traveled long distances.
Without a doubt, it is one of the most monumental works of the
Inca Empire.
Check in and overnight at ARANWA HOTEL.
MONDAY, APRIL 27 SACRED VALLEY(B, Box Lunch)
In the morning, our day will begin with a tour of approximately
an hour and a half to the archaeological sites of Moray and
Maras. The archaeological remains of Moray consist of
mysterious concentric circular terraces that for some scholars
would be an agricultural research center. External plaIorms,
more elevated, would be at higher temperatures than the
inmates and could simulate the condi-ons of the different
ecological floors of the empire. On the other hand, Maras is
surreal sight. It is an impressive complex of salt mining. These
are large deposits of salt that were used to trade for other
products with other regions of the empire.
We will enjoy a box lunch en route. ADer the tour we will return
to our hotel.
Overnight at ARANWA HOTEL.
TUESDAY, APRIL 28
SACRED VALLEY-MACHU PICCHU-CUSCO (B,L)
A transporta-on service with a guide will pick us up from our
hotel in Urubamba at the established -me and will drive us to
the Ollantaytambo train sta-on. The guide will assist us at the
sta-on.
Our tour to Machu Picchu begins with a Vistadome train ride to
Aguas Calientes in approximately two hours. This town is also
known as "Machu Picchu pueblo" and is the last stop before the
entrance to the remains of the most important archaeological
site in Peru. In Aguas Calientes are the railway sta-on, a craDs
market, restaurants and accommoda-on of different categories
for those who prefer to spend the night at the foot of the
mountain and climb it early. Finally, aDer a short transfer we will
reach Machu Picchu, a masterpiece of engineering and
architecture that is believed served as a sanctuary and retreat
for the Inca Pachacutec (1438 - 1572). Machu Picchu, which
means “Old Mountain”, is considered a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO and one of the new seven wonders of the world. Once
in the citadel you may op-onally visit the In-punku (Sun Gate).
Lunch at Cafe Inkaterra
In the aDernoon, we will return to Cusco on board Vistadome
train. A transporta-on service with a guide will pick us up from
the Ollantaytambo train sta-on, at the established -me, and will
transfer us to our hotel in Cusco City.
Check in and Overnight at LIBERTADOR CUZCO.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29 CUSCO (B,D)
In the morning, we will start our tour with a visit to the
Coricancha, also known as the "Temple of the Sun" (or
"Premises of the Gilded One"), the construc-on of which was
ordered by Inca Pachacútec (1438-1471) and was used as base
for the construc-on of the Santo Domingo Convent upon the
arrival of the Spaniards. This is when the Sun (In-, in Quechua)
was worshipped during the Inca Empire and at the -me of the
Incas its walls were fully covered with gold sheets and its
courtyards were planted with golden corn and life-size llamas.
We will then go to the Cathedral, the most important building
on the Main Square and one of the most splendid Spanish
colonial churches in America, which is shaped as a La-n Cross
and houses about 400 colonial pain-ngs from the Cusco art
school, and impressive goldsmith, silversmith and precious
stones works. Its construc-on lasted almost a century, it started
in 1560 and ended in 1654. The Ecclesias-cal Chapter ordered
to extract and transport hundreds of stones from the
Sacsayhuamán fortress for this purpose. We will then visit said
fortress, en emblema-c work of the Incas, which protected the
Holy City. Conceived and built by Inca Pachacútec in the 15th
century, the Sacsayhuamán complex was built with megalithic
blocks, which transporta-on and construc-on con-nue to be a
mystery.
We will then go to Qenqo, located four kilometers away from
Cusco City, an archaeological complex mainly used for religious
purposes. It is believed that agricultural rituals took place there.
We will finally visit the ves-ges of Puka Pukara, located seven
kilometers away from Cusco. Puka Pukara, which means "red
fortress", was an architectural complex presumably used for
military purposes; it has many rooms, squares, bathrooms,
aqueducts, walls and towers, and it is believed that the Inca’s
entourage used it while he rested at Tambomachay.
In the aDernoon, a transporta-on service will pick us up from
the hotel and will transfer us to a restaurant MAP Café for a
dinner and bring us back at the established -me.
Overnight at LIBERTADOR CUZCO
THURSDAY, APRIL 30 CUSCO-PUNO (B,L)
A transporta-on service will pick us up from our hotel at the
established -me and will transfer us to Puno. We will first stop
at Andahuaylillas, a village located 40 kilometers from Cusco,
which most important aSrac-on is the church of Andahuaylillas,
also called "The Sis-ne Chapel of America" due to the high
quality pieces of art found in it; its structure was built in the
sixteenth century on the remains of construc-ons probably
Wari. Today it has an original pipe organ recently restored. We
will con-nue our trip to Racchi, where we will find the Temple
of Viracocha, an amazing and unique rectangular building,
similar to a wall, 30 meters wide and 20 high. It has windows
and doors and is thought to have the highest ceiling of the Inca
Empire. We will stop for lunch in Sicuani, and then briefly at La
Raya, the highest point of the route between Puno and Cusco,
over 4,313 masl. From here, 61 kilometers from the city of
Juliaca (very close to Puno) we will reach the town of Pucara,
where we will visit the Alcra Museum. Pukara was the first
seSlement of the highland lake city and developed between 100
and 300BC. Finally we will drive along the final course to the city
of Puno.
Check in and Overnight at PUNO LIBERTADOR HOTEL.
FRIDAY, MAY 1 PUNO (B,L,D)
In the morning, we will be picked up from Puno's lake port and
transferred to the floa-ng islands of the Uros. Uros is an
ancestral society that inhabits a series of ar-ficial islands built
with totora, a reef that grows in the lake. The islands are built by
weaving totoras in the places where they are thicker and form a
natural layer. They build their totora houses over it and cook in
the open air to prevent possible fires. ADer a one-hour tour, we
will con-nue our trip to the Taquile Island. Unlike other islands,
inhabited by Aymara-speaking people in the lake, its residents
speak Quechua. It was part of the Inca Empire and ves-ges of
said culture can be noted in their buildings. Nevertheless, when
the Spaniards arrived, they forced its residents to get rid of their
typical clothes and forced them to wear tradi-onal farmers'
clothes. They will give us a brief presenta-on about the island
and we can tour it un-l lunch -me. We will walk to the main
pier and will return to Puno's port aDer lunch.
Dinner and Overnight at PUNO LIBERATOR HOTEL.
