SNCCSNCC = Student Nonviolent Coordinating

Committee (“Snick”)

SNCC – the basics

Page 5: Day 5 - 2016 - SNCC - Sit-ins - GreensboroughFour.pptx

Council The Problem – Seen as the shock troops of the civil rights movement, SNCC often pushed forward with plans to use non-violence to fight segregation and Jim Crow in areas deemed too dangerous by other organizations. However, as time went on in the 1960s, SNCC adopted greater militancy (aggressiveness) and moved towards more forceful activism.

The Question – Assume the role of a committee working for Martin Luther King and the SCLC. With more and more civil rights events making the news media, you are concerned that SNCC may bring ‘bad press’ to the Civil Rights Movement as a whole. Such press may set the Movement back, erasing progress made by such events as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Little Rock 9. What would you recommend Martin Luther King and the SCLS do to help prevent this from happening?

SNCC “When the student committee was formed … I told my

older sister … to put me on the list. And when two hundred students were selected for the first demonstration I was among them. I went through the food line in the restaurant at the State Capitol (Atlanta) with six other students, but when we got to the cashier she wouldn't take our money … The Lieutenant-Governor came down and told us to leave. We didn’t and went to the country jail.” - Ruby Doris Smith

“The students in that picture had a certain look on their faces, sort of sullen, angry, determined. Before, the Negro in the South had always looked on the defensive, cringing. This time they were taking the initiative. They were kids my age, and I knew this had something to do with my own life.” - Unknown
