Warm Up

Compose a paragraph and describe how to reach the fire drill location. Do not use any prepositional phrases.

Prepositional Phrases:

Prepositional phrases generally contain the preposition and an object of the preposition.

Objects of the preposition MUST be nouns.

Here are some examples:

Identify the preposition, noun, article, and adjective in the following:

• In bed

(in, preposition and bed, noun)

• To Texas

(to, preposition and Texas, noun)

The noun may have modifiers.

In the big bed

(in, preposition / the, article / big, adjective / bed, noun)

• To the grocery store

(to, preposition / the, article/ grocery, adjective / store, noun)

Subjects and verbs canNEVER be found in prepositional phrases.

It is a good habit to learn to spot prepositional phases.

Use ((parentheses)) to mark them;That way when you are looking for the

subject and verb of the sentence,it will narrow down the search.

Preposition Pair work

I will assign your partner to you. Read the directions and flip the page over to start work on the questions. Identify the prepositions (P) and the objects of the prepositions (Op). Make sure you put the prep. phrase in parenthesis ( ).

Directions: Circle all the prepositional phrases in the following sentences. 1. After the movie the group of teenagers went to McDonalds for a burger. 2. • Get into your pairs. Read and annotate “The Time Factor.” Read together and annotate your own copy of the passage. Focus on author’s purpose when annotating. Remember, do not only highlight.

• When finished, answer the three discussion questions on the back. Your answers must be in complete sentences.

Planning ahead is a measure of class. The rich and even the middle class plan for future generations, but the poor can plan ahead only a few weeks or days.
