Ode to My Students aka Sonnet ExampleMs. Popp
I’ve traveled the world, but now mine’s quite small
And revolves solely around teenagersThough sometimes I think they’ll be my downfall
I have not yet had need for a Taser
Teenage drama brings much needed humorBut sometimes leads to imprudent choices
Some need a wake up call, like a roosterAnd can’t hear it over all the voices
Talking in class and not about schoolworkFor you, I have some serious questions:Do you see the benefits of hard work?
Have you learned the importance of passion?
At end of the day though, this I believeI love all my kids, and know they’ll succeed.
Oxymorons
An oxymoron describes when two juxtaposed (next to each other) words have opposing or divergent meanings.
Examples: Jumbo Shrimp, Alone Together, Pretty Ugly, Small Crowd, Least Favorite
Oxymorons
Your Turn: Create oxymorons using the words in the speech bubble.
Paradox
A paradox is a statement or situation with seemingly contradictory or incompatible components.
Examples: I must be cruel to be kind; What a pity youth must be wasted on the young
Oxymoron vs. Paradox
***** AN OXYMORON CAN ONLY BE TWO WORDS,
WHILE A PARADOX CAN BE A SENTENCE OR MORE.
AN OXYMORON HAS NO EXPLANATION , WHILE A
PARADOX SOMETIMES EXPLAINS ITSELF.
