RACE WEEK DAILY by Sunday September 4, 2011 Continued on page 5 FREE I t’s a familiar tale to Bay sail- ors, who have gathered once again for a Labor Day Weekend tradition: Saturday began with a light, flukey southwesterly breeze for the three-day Chesapeake Bay YRA (CBYRA) Annapolis Race Week (ARW) 2011. “The breeze settled in at about 12 noon and piped up to 10 to 12 knots,” says on-the- water chair Bobby Frey. “It was beautiful, very comfortable.” According to all racer reports, the wind co- operated much better than anticipated, mak- ing for a pleasant and competitive day one. Racing unfolded on three racing circles, with fleet 1 led by An- napolis YC (AYC) PRO Chip Thayer. Based on preliminary results, in the four-boat Farr 40 division, Kevin McNeil on Nightshift, who placed third in 2010, is in the lead with five points, with Larry Bulman’s team on Yellow Jacket in second and last year’s winner, Erik Wulff on Endor- phin, in third. Peter Scheidt’s Maggie team is already on the way to bumping up its second-place finish from 2010 and holds the lead in the J/35 division with two seconds and a first place on day one. Charles Kohlerman on Medicine Man ended the day with a bullet and is sitting in second, with the Bad Company syndicate in third place. 2010 ARW winners, Ennio Staffini’s JV 52 Anema & Core team, proved victorious in the eight-boat PHRF A1/ A0 division yesterday. Martin Roesch’s J/111 Velocity team trails behind in second by only two points, with Bob Moran’s J/111 Ragin’ crew in third place. Grady Byus and Kristen Berry, who sail regularly in ARW, generally on boats beginning with a “J” both crewed for Moran on Ragin’ and expressed how pleased they were with the decent breeze. Berry, who trimmed the main- sail, refers to himself as “the screw-up of the day or the minister of mistakes” and admits that they did not sail the right course. “I’m going to write a great blog post on this one,” says Berry. “I read the sail- ing instructions three times and did a briefing with the tactician before the race.” After accidentally sailing a four-leg race, the team re- tired after finish (RAF) and still managed a third-place overall. North Point Yacht Sales, a sponsor of ARW, has the J/111 Ragin’ on display for the public at the City Dock for this event. Check it out to the left of the stage at the Susan C. Campbell Park. Craig and Dotty Saunders’s crew on Monkey Dust posted two bullets in three races in the 22-boat PHRF A2 division and has a solid nine-point lead over John Eyring’s second-place team on Hero Squad. It’s a familiar tale to Bay sail-ors, who have gathered once again for a Labor Day Weekend tradition: Saturday began with

a light, flukey southwesterly breeze for the three-day Chesapeake Bay YRA (CBYRA) Annapolis Race Week (ARW) 2011. “The breeze settled in at about 12 noon and piped up to 10 to 12 knots,” says on-the-water chair Bobby Frey. “It was beautiful, very comfortable.” According to all racer reports, the wind co-operated much better than anticipated, mak-ing for a pleasant and competitive day one.

Racing unfolded on three racing circles, with fleet 1 led by An-napolis YC (AYC) PRO Chip Thayer. Based on preliminary results, in the four-boat Farr 40 division, Kevin McNeil on Nightshift, who placed third in 2010, is in the lead with five points, with Larry Bulman’s team on Yellow Jacket in second and last year’s winner, Erik Wulff on Endor-phin, in third.

Thank You- to the Sponsors of CBYRA Annapolis Race Week

on Apparition took third place on day one.

PRO Bill Adams’s Eastport (EYC) team managed the fleet 2 circle com-prised of J/105s, J/30s, and J/80s. In the 15-boat J/105 division, Carl and Scott Gitchell on Tenacious, who placed second at last year’s regatta, posted two bullets in three races on day one and have a four-point lead over Andrew Kennedy’s Bat IV and Jim Konigsberg’s Inigo in second and third. Although they crushed the fleet in 2010, the Rum Puppy team, led by skipper Jim Biddle, had a tough third race and are currently in fourth-place. Local J/105 sailors thrive on tight racing and quick lead changes at the top of the fleet and know that it’s still anyone’s regatta.

Bob Rutsch and Mike Costello on Bebop are so far successfully defend-ing their top position in the J/30 fleet from 2010 and finished the last two

races in first place yesterday. David McConaughy on USA 90 is six points behind in second with Ron Anderson’s Insatiable team trailing behind by only a point in third place.

The Watson crew on the J/30 Avita enjoyed a beverage at the City Dock after racing. Father George and his two sons Tom (skipper) and Dan (tactician) finished third in two races on day one. The crew, who has sailed together since 1971, has won the event before but admit that it’s been awhile. The boat name Avita means “to life” in Italian. “We are competitive,” says George, “but our motto is ‘because we have fun.’”

“It was a really nice day,” says Tom. His brother Dan agrees, “The wind was steady today; it wasn’t August on the Chesapeake.” Both agreed that the race committee, run by EYC on their circle, did a great job. “They even caught a wind shift right before the start with

only a minute delay. Anyone who’s ever done race committee work knows how impressive that is.”

Kristen and Brian Robinson on the J/80 Angry Chameleon started strong yesterday with two bullets in three races and hold the lead over John White’s team by five points in the 14-boat division. Jesse McKnight, yet another Eastport YC sailor, is currently in third place.

The eight-boat PHRF N division, managed by Gibson Island YC’s PRO Terry May, sailed a 14-mile distance course. Marino Dimarzo on Nembo took the lead yesterday. John Lanigan’s Divide by Zero and Aaron Ressler’s Parrot Head scored second and third place respectively.

Cal 25 sailors Jimmy and Mike Praley had a great day in fleet 3, led by PRO Ron Rosturfer from the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron. The Pra-leys, who placed second at ARW 2010,

won all three races of the day and hold a four-point lead over the second-place boat, Krigare, owned by Erik and Marty Lostrom. Will Farrell and his team on Hasty are in third.

In the Catalina 27 divi-sion, Tom Walsh and John Potvin on Slam Duck and John Anderson in Swell are holding on to their respec-tive first and second place finishes from 2010. The Slam Duck crew won every race of the day and hold a six-point lead over Swell. Peter Zahn on Snagglepuss is currently in third.

Following his second-place finish in 2010, Paul van Ravensway on Millenium Falcon aims to step up his game, and so far, so good, as

Incorrigible only sailed one race yesterday, for reasons unknown, and hopefully, all is well with the team, currently scored in third.

Competitors, family members, and the general public are invited to take free boat rides all weekend on the U.S. Sailing Road Show’s five Open Bics at the National Sailing Hall of Fame. All interested sailors need to do is show up at the docks. U.S. Sailing Road Show member Will Ricketson says, “As part of the ARW festivities, we’re here to expose the NSHOF and all the great things they do.” Ricketson and his Road Show partner Brooke Thom-son are also giving away stickers, tattoos, and more information on U.S. Sailing.

he won the day in the J/24 division. Brent Ellwood on Sane Asylum and Peter Rich on USA 4006 are in second and third place respectively.

Janet and David Coleman on Flying Circus posted three bullets yesterday in PHRF B and just may repeat their 2010 victory if they keep it up. Joseph Weaver and crew on Phone are in second place as of day one, with Brett Har-rison and John Yeigh on A Parent Tripp in third.

He won seven of eight races at the 2010 edition of ARW, and Fred Caisson and his crew on Defiant are at it again with three wins on day on in PHRF CD. Rick McGregor on Double Agent trails behind in second by four points. Robert Seidel’s

Rumbullion! Here’s an excerpt from The Skipper (the

Magazine for Yachtsmen) from November 1969 by Paul Brock:

“Ever since it was first made in the era of buccaneers, rum has been associated with sailors and the sea. There always have been something about it that smacks of wind and water, bowsprits and beam ends, rocking and rolling, and rollicking song.

As a complete relaxation from bloodshed, looting, scurvy, and protracted voyages, the Caribbean pirates would drag a barrel or two of “Kill Devil,” as they called it, on to a desert island and swig themselves into a non-piratical state of musical mayhem, brotherly love, sear-ing remorse, and finally glorious oblivion.

Desert islands and tropic climes notwith-standing, rum is still regarded as the mariner’s

drink, the true distillation to match a spirit of seagoing adventure. Beloved by sailors, pirates and handsome swashbucklers, its appeal was immortalized in Robert Louis Stevenson’s lusty song from “Treasure Island” [Yo-ho-ho!]…

First produced in the West Indies, rum was originally a very crude spirit distilled from molasses… drunk by slaves, the masters much preferring the more delicate brandy imported from France. It was called Kill Devil simply because it would have killed the devil himself, but later it acquired the name of Rumbullion or Rumbustion, old English slang words for a drunken brawl. Rumbullion finally became corrupted to Rum, and through the agency of ships trading to the West Indies it was introduced to England about the middle of the seventeenth century.”
