Part III Choosing the right tool- achieving the right goals

Some tools can do the job—but may not be the most effective!

Some tools can do the job, but may not be precise enough!

Some tools may look like they can do the job, but they are not really up to it!

Some tools-really can’t do the job!

And some tools CAN do the job but should NOT be used for this type of job!

But so many tools! How to choose which one to use, for what?

Part IV Some steps

Step 1:Think about key stages/activities in your work

My Example-the Research Cycle

Lack of inclusionof priorities ,needs and realities from the ground

Inadequate useof other sourcesof knowledge

Poor collaboration withstakeholders during theresearch

Limited understandingof how research results can most effectively be made use of

Ineffective ways of getting knowledge to target groups

Limited opportunities for learning within research process

Step 2: What would you like to achieve, but is lacking in knowledge sharing, collaboration for each stage?

Step 3: Turn them into goals…

Step 4: Identify who to share, collaborate and engage with at each stage…and their capacity

Can they access and use the internet?Do you need to meet them face to face?Do they read and write?What languages do they use?Other…

Example: Government officials, farmers, other researchers, etc

Activity: Let’s plan it for YOUR context and activities

Each stage of work offers different opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

It is important to be realistic about the capacity of your context and people

1. What are the stages of your work? Map this out for yourself.

2. What issues do you have at each stage of your work? Write them down!

3. Turn these into goals-write them down too

4. Who do you want to share, collaborate and engage with in the various stages?

Step 5: Look at the functionality of various tools-some examples

• Joint work planning: Google Calendar, Docs, Sites• Preparing a presentation or a proposal together:

Google Docs, Presentations• Meeting online: chat, talk, conf calls, screen and

document sharing, chat, taking notes on a wiki • Store project information in shared environment• Share a reference collection: Mendeley • Document the process; reuse project information;

share and solicit feedback from communities; publish data not included in final peer-reviewed articles: blogs, CC, social media/networks
