Part IWhat is going on around us?

Page 3: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

What is going on in the World?

Page 4: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

And in the agricultural sector?

Page 5: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

My Example: What is going on in the CGIAR?

Page 6: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

What is going on around YOU?

What sector do you work in?

Are there changes happening in this sector?

What are the changes directing your sector towards?

Activity: • Discuss with your neighbour

about your sectors and what is going on

• Take a minute to write down your sector and what is going on.

Part II A call for greater knowledge sharing and collaboration—but what is it?

Page 8: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Some lessons and responses

Need to involve multiple stakeholders to develop innovations

Lack of connection between research and development

Information is vital for decision-making

Printed publications are limited form of sharing knowledge-need plethura of formats

• National initiatives e.g AGROS• Tools for Participation and

interaction: e.g’s PRA, COPs• Innovation systems and

Platforms/forums: e.g GFAR-ICM4ARD

• Information systems/KM: e.g WISARD

• Virtual and Web 2.0 tools• Networks: e.g’s AGRIS/GFIS,

AgroWEB Network, ECORENA• In-house, dedicated

KM/KS/ICT/Communication programs: e.g CGIAR-ICT-KM

Your views on approaches

Where do you come from?

What applications should we be doing?

What is working and should be replicated?

What isn’t working?

Activity: • Think about what approaches

you know, believe in or use• Share these with us- the good

and the bad! (To be noted down on a flip chart)

Part III Choosing the right tool- achieving the right goals

Page 14: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Some tools can do the job—but may not be the most effective!

Page 15: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Some tools can do the job, but may not be precise enough!

Page 16: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Some tools may look like they can do the job, but they are not really up to it!

Page 17: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Some tools-really can’t do the job!

Page 18: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

And some tools CAN do the job but should NOT be used for this type of job!

Page 19: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT
Page 20: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

But so many tools! How to choose which one to use, for what?

Page 21: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Part IV Some steps

Page 22: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Step 1:Think about key stages/activities in your work

My Example-the Research Cycle

Page 23: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Lack of inclusionof priorities ,needs and realities from the ground

Inadequate useof other sourcesof knowledge

Poor collaboration withstakeholders during theresearch

Limited understandingof how research results can most effectively be made use of

Ineffective ways of getting knowledge to target groups

Limited opportunities for learning within research process

Step 2: What would you like to achieve, but is lacking in knowledge sharing, collaboration for each stage?

Page 24: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Step 3: Turn them into goals…

Page 25: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Step 4: Identify who to share, collaborate and engage with at each stage…and their capacity

Can they access and use the internet?Do you need to meet them face to face?Do they read and write? What languages do they use?Other…

Example: Government officials, farmers, other researchers, etc

Page 26: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Activity: Let’s plan it for YOUR context and activities

Each stage of work offers different opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

It is important to be realistic about the capacity of your context and people

1. What are the stages of your work? Map this out for yourself.

2. What issues do you have at each stage of your work? Write them down!

3. Turn these into goals-write them down too

4. Who do you want to share, collaborate and engage with in the various stages?

Page 27: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

Step 5: Look at the functionality of various tools-some examples

• Joint work planning: Google Calendar, Docs, Sites• Preparing a presentation or a proposal together:

Google Docs, Presentations• Meeting online: chat, talk, conf calls, screen and

document sharing, chat, taking notes on a wiki • Store project information in shared environment• Share a reference collection: Mendeley • Document the process; reuse project information;

share and solicit feedback from communities; publish data not included in final peer-reviewed articles: blogs, CC, social media/networks

Page 28: Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT

What about for the tools in Day 0?

• Having discussions and feedback on topics• Documenting and sharing Blogging• Work planning• Collaborative production of outputsCollaborative Writing• Sharing references• CollaboratingMendeley• Sharing information about projects• Monitoring and EvaluationVideo/Film• Collecting information• Sharing informationAudio/Radio• Sharing information

Media• Effective planning meetings

F2F KS Methods• Collect information from different people and sources• Create visualizations for discussions and sharingGoogle Geo Tools• Joint planningGoogle Collaboration

Tools

Step 6: Match the tools to your stages and goals…keeping in mind the people!

online surveys, wikis, blogs, RSS, discussion forums

online surveys, wikis,

blogs, discussion

forums, mindmapping,

shared calendars, decision support systems

wikis, blogs, photo sharing, google docs, discussion forums,

intranets, shared calendars,shared reference list

Think about the tools you will explore today

Keep this in mind as you learn the tools and think about the functionality of the tools as you learn them and how you will be able to apply them to the particular goals after the training

Activity: Write down the two tools you choose

to explore today Think about and discuss the

functionality of those tools Based on your work

framework(stages, issues, goals, context and people)—where do you think these tools can be used

Write them down next to particular stages of work and the goals on your framework
